I'm first going to butter everyone up by saying saying there seems to be a definite level of commaradore prevelent here that is uncommon to say the least. It's my belief that these needs to be celebrated. Let me also say that I am very envious of those that can afford (both financially and timewise) to take long tours, although I love reading and dreaming about them.
Then I though, just because I can't go doesn't mean my camera cant.
Here's the kernel of my idea. Feel free to offer suggestions/improvements/criticism. This will, no doubt, take a village. I'm going to take my camera and ride to San Francisco from Santa Barbara. I'll take pics along the way, and once I get to SF I'll hand the camera over to a fellow VFRer. We'll have lunch, take a pic or two, and (s)he'll ride to where ever. Then VFRer hands the camera to VFRer 2, and so on and so forth. I'm hoping that people will join the camera for impruvto (sp?) VFR group rides along the way which can be planned on the thread. I don't care when this ends, as long as progress continues. If there are no updates for a month, yeah, I'd kinda like my camera back.
I'll put my address on the camera (I would like to get it back at some point), and every few days someone can reply to the thread with some uploaded pics. Ideally, there are some cameras that tag pics with the GPS location of where the pic was taken, and I'll try to get one of those.
Where will it go??? I think the cool thing is that it doesn't really matter as long as it goes somewhere... The goals are to a) meet fellow VFRers and b) promote the idea of a collective experience that many of us can participate in.
So what do you think? It's going to take more than three of us to make this ride.
Seems a very cool concept to me. For example, if I got the camera at T-Mac, I'd take it Road America, Wis. for the AMA road races June 1 > 3. That'd make a good place to hand it over to the next rider. Anyone else planning on going? I camp in the Carousel tent area across from the consession stand (site # 19).
I think it is a pretty awesome idea. although I feel like it is possible you wont get the camera back. Not because someone stole it, but its is very possible it may become lost, broke, stolen, etc.
Im assuming pictures will be posted and deleted along the way so there is enough room on the camera?
I will certainly volunteer for the second leg of the relay since im in the San Francisco area. Depending on when you decide to do it i will be riding up to Vancouver BC this summer and hoping to meet up with a few guys. or if its before that I can ride however far to meet up for the next hand off.
I think it would be really cool to see how far we could get it, and if it was possible to maybe get a loop around the US/Canada? Might be a little ambitious though :rolleyes:
I'm well aware the camera might not make its way back to me, although it would be cool to have a camera that's traveled farther than I have. This doesn't have be continious. If someone picks it up one weekend, downloads the pics and clears the memory card, and passes it off the next weekend that is fine. This is obviously not meant to burden anyone, just to be a fun motivator to get out there. As if we need the it!
I wasn't thinking about startin until June or possible July as both my birthday and MotoGP at Laguna Seca are in July. But if people are on board sooner than that, who am I to say no? The loop would be great (maybe we can get Booker in on the action), but if the sucker heads east and doesn't turn back I wouldn't complain. Do we have peope in Eastern Europe???
I'm planning on the SumSum2 if it needs to get from the west to the midwest. We could call it the Chain Camera - like a chain letter. Kinda like the (rumored) FLAF. Hopefully it will be better kept track of though.

Camera once you get it back and not see it posted by other users in between, only thing is won't this be pretty much same as every rider taking pics and posting it here with there own camera and thus sharing the trip with every one ?
I think it's a great idea. If it's anywhere near my during my trip this summer (see the "Lapping the Continent, Sort of..." thread), I'd be thrilled to have it for a day.
I dont know if any of you are Redditors, but the motorcycle community there attempted/is attempting to get a stuffed animal on a loop around the US. They put a map together where everyone could add there location and mark how far they were willing to ride. that might be a good idea.
Also, Im planning on leaving for Canada on June 25th. I could get it as far as Calgary, or somewhere in Montana or western Wyoming. It would also be cool if we could get it to the east coast, ship it over to the UK or Europe and keep it going!
and Ninjadoc, Although it may not be that different than just people uploading picture from their own cameras, i think its more the idea that is pretty damn cool. its just another excuse for people to meet each other and ride (like we really need an excuse.) and like mk2davis said, it would be cool to have a camera that has made it that far.

The potential is almost unlimited.
The logistics may be a challenge, but considering that most VFRD members are pretty laid back, they should be workable.
Great idea for a project.
I do think Ninjadoc has an idea that could also be neat if quite few people could work out a series of trips that could be put together.
The only real drawback I see is the amount of work and planning it will require.

I wish there was a way to add captions. . . the way I see it happening now the person taking pic won't necessarily downloading them. Maybe include a sign regarding where you are in the pic itself? Similar to a Facebook tag. Sort of thinking out loud. I'm trying to avoid having a string of 147 random mountain pics. It would be nice to have accurate labels.
Ninjadoc, you are right it would be similar. the difference I'm hoping is that I'm not reading what someone else did. I'm reading/seeing the extension of something I participated in. Maybe a minor difference, but hopefully a significant one.
Booker, your ride looks pretty epic. I'd be honored if the CC (Chain Camera) could tag along your little journey.
TC, that Redditor trip looks intense. While I think they've planned it more than I intended to, the idea is very similar.
Looking at my calender, the weekend of May 11-13 is the earliest I could get this started. I think it's important to start it soon because I know there will be periods of inactivity, and we need to make the most of the riding season.
Sounds like a good way to get our VFR ppl to meet each other(as said already). Kind of reminded me of my 10 month ride in the early 70's. "I can't get lost if I don't care where I'm going". At least that was my riding plans back then.
Another option is that many of us have cameras and most run Cards so instead of handing off a camera we can swap cards or download to a site for editing.

I love this idea, im a little too close to you (like 15 mins) to be much use for an outbound stint. But I could pick it up on a return leg and bring it back in, or I might be available to come to the sendoff and take your photo

I don't know if everyone will have a chance to post their own pics. For instance, I won't be able to post my pics up to SF. Is there someway to tag the fotos after they are posted without replying to the thread? Maybe open the Chain Camera as a it's own person with public password? Then everyone could edit in their tags their pics. Moderators may not like it (please weigh in here), but as long as we are mostly mature I'd think it would be okay.
PhotoOp, we could ride (at least part of it) together. Hang out for as long as you can, then leave when you need to. My brother will probably come on his Duc, but we won't hold that against him!
I like the Idea it could be fun.
Here is a thought :rolleyes: instead of sending a camera out you could do the same thing in a Photo tag style thread. You take a road trip and post pictures and at the end or where ever you choose, you post the last one as a "Tag point' then the next person has to start there photo log from there and only one person can claim the Tag. Or you have to meet the person who is doing the posting now so to speak to get a hand off (I personally.like this better than just a tag spot because you get to meet more people). At least this way you wouldn't have to spend money on a camera(but would be cool to have a world traveling camera). One Photo account that is shared would work best. Any way I really like the Idea and am ready to play anyway you want, and hope I can join in somewhere along the LOOOOOONG line. :smile:
The phototag idea would also work. I think more people may be inclined to meet if they have something tangible to pass. Please let me know what you think everybody, this is a group effort that will work out better with more support. I have a 5MP camera that runs off of AA that I received 4 years ago still in the box, so the camera itself is no big sacrifice. I like the idea of the FLAF. . .
OK, not to blatantly rip off the idea from the Redditors brought to us by TC, but what if we started with a stuffed animal that was passed between members, and pics had to include the animal in the pic. Everyone uses their own camera, and posts their own pics. This would make "tagging" the pics easier.

I was wondering were you were going to go with Dora. I like that, I was also thinking about Animal or Frankenstein (because even though I don't admit it, a part of me is jealous of the good looking Frankenviffers out there).
The stuffed animal would be an awesome idea, every one can be creative and take pictures with it around the world, it can be passed along pretty cheap and no worries about break down or anything, plus It gives the idea a "character and individuality" which gets passed from one person to another and thus take part in the trip

Yeah, I usually make it out there once or twice per summer. Tickets are kind of expensive, and it's usually a last-minute thing for me. Vintage races are cool, the Ferrari Challenge blew my mind just from the sheer amount of money being driven around the track and to the track, bike races are awesome...it's all fun.

another thought is setting up a photbucket account to store all the photos once you download your set of photos. the password can be changed by each successive member and passed on, one by one.

This is an awesome idea. Maybe us Aussies could do something similar.
There is a guitar effects pedal company in Australia that has done something similar with new and/or prototype pedals. Some funky units have passed around the bass playing community. I haven't received one yet. Hoping I can jump on the next bandwagon.
I picked up a Possum hand puppet on our honeymoon to Halls Gap two years ago. It immediately got strapped to the handlebars of my little Suzuki Bandit 250.
Great Idea! Sounds like a good way to have a little fun, see some different parts of the US via photos, and meet some fellow vfrd members. It may take a while to make its way here, but I can take it through Indiana!
