I had a crazy idea that if you install a switch to momentarily turn off the ignition to the gear lever you'd get a quick shifter function to your bike. But my bike is carbed so it wouldn't stop fuel delivery so some back fire might result? Anyone ever try this? After little looking through wiring diagrams I think the best circuit to install the switch would be the side stand circuit instead of the kill switch circuit. You'd need a breaking switch there to cut ignition but not power supply to the ECU. This would be quite easy and cheap to fabricate to VFR I think. Opinions please and bear in mind that this is just a crazy idea that popped into my mind :idea3:
Quick shifter for carbed bike

Not exactly a cheap option. But it seems that carbs are no problem.
am sure a member here had a switch put onto his gear shifter and it messed his ignition up... Think it was added by previous owner and was not working well or similar?? Never did read any follow up as to where it was plugged into?
Am also looking at quick shifters for the vfr and have found the odd universal Dynojet unit for around £100 on feabay.
Am guessing they can be made to fit to existing rear sets, but as you say, does fuel cut out as well as ignition? does it matter? am sure i hear race bikes popping especially when a shifter is enabled? Will a cut into a side stand switch be sufficient? will they shut ignition both up and down shifting?

Well I did a little test during the weekend and the sidestand switch does cut ignition while in gear and if the stand is returned to original position fast enough ignition is restored and the engine recoveres even at idle. And looking at the wiring diagram it seems that the switch is a grounding one so you'd only need a switch to break the connection while shifting. I think this should be verified with a multimeter though.
I was thinking of a simple mechanical switch to cut ignition only on upshifts but there's no reason it couldn't be used also on downshifts with suitable type of switch(es). The side stand circuit cuts ignition at all circumstances.
If you have removed your sidestand already did you have to ground the wire going from the switch to the ECU? If so that would verify the circuit works the way I've been thinking. With a carbed bike fuel delivery is not really dependend of the electricity at least for that short period of time so there is really no way to stop it as there is allways some fuel in the float bowls even if the fuel pump is stopped. I guess it doesn't matter or no carbed bike could use a quick shifter.

The shift rod pressure sensor is what is wanted. Not sure if they are programmable yet, must read into set up more.
Mostly it all boils down to price, a quick look and £200 gets you just a sensor, £350+ gets you the lot with whistles.

My buddy runs a Battle Shifter on his (carburetted) RS125. It uses a shift rod with an integrated switch to signal when to cut the ignition. It also taps into the tach pulses and automatically varies the length of the ignition cut depending on what RPM the bike is at. I scoped it all out once, but seem to have misplaced my records at the moment...
