For some time now my Speedometer stops starts. Sometime it tends to happen when I go over a bump. I have been trying to trace a loose connection without success. Yesterday something strange happened. When it was not working I went to turn the indicator off and pressed the horn instead and it came straight back on. Since then, every time it went off, I pressed the horn and it comes back on. I’ve checked the wires to the horn and their not loose. Would anybody know when I need to be looking for this strange situation please?
I have a similar issue with my '98. Occasionally the speedometer, clock & trip odometer will cut out, only to come back on within a few seconds or as long as a minute or two later. I've noticed that it generally happens after I've hit a bump fairly hard, but I've also seen it happen when I've accelerated hard through 1st three gears. I've been assuming the issue is related to an electrical connnection to the gauge cluster and have been planning to inspect the connectors next time the plastics will have to come off. Note; the tachometer does keep working when this happens
I haven't noticed any connection between the instrument failures and use of the horn, but will try to remember to use the horn next time it happens.
I had a different experience on my '01 - when I pushed the horn button (standard horn and two Fiamms), sometimes the engine would die. Sometimes it was momentarily cutting out all by itself. I never found out exactly what it was, but it's never returned since I found the earth cluster plug on the left side of the frame near the front of the seat, andtwisted/soldered all the wires together and added a dedicated earth wire to the ECU box.
There's a recent thread on VFRD somewhere about similar problems - hunt it down, as it may be relevant.
HTH...
I had this exact same glitch on my '99. Never found out what it was, and it was still there when I sold it.

I have never chased this down, but there seems to be some ground or connectivity issue with the horn circuit and the main harness on my '98. I have noticed while rolling along an ever so subtle "hesitation" when I hit the horn button. A non geek rider probly wouldnt notice. -- -- Sence its a horn button only event, I havent freaked over it, maybe at some point I'll chase it down, but there always seem to be something higher on the list that I want to tinker with first.
