Hi all. Just a simple question - starter relay clicks but starter motor doesn't turn. Checking voltage at starter relay terminals I have 12v one side (direct from battery) but, when starter button pressed, only 4.5v at other (output to starter motor) side. I'm taking it there should be 12v here. I've checked the correct operation (continuity tests) of the side-stand, clutch lever and neutral switches and all are good. Oh, and I've checked the 30A fuse on the relay is OK.
I take it this is simply a problem with the relay itself?
why dont you jump the relay....get a thick wire and jump both the terminals at the relay...if the starter cranks the problem could be with the starter switch or the relay.
Relay contacts have to pass high current and that leads to sparks and arcs internally. This causes oxidation and corrosion of the contacts over time. You may be faced with this situation or a partially shorted starter motor that is dragging the voltage down but not drawing enough current to blow the fuse.
As suggested, jump the relay contacts but expect to get a spark when doing so.
It may click alright but that does not mean it is alright.....
Thanks for the input guys. It turns out that the battery wasn't in the best shape anyway... Only holding just under 12v and when the starter was pressed dropping down to 4.5v. I've fitted a new battery now.
Although the battery was weak I have to admit to some owner-input to this problem - I have been doing some work on the bike and fitted a new clutch cover in place of the previously repaired item which was on. As stuff fell out when I removed the old cover I ended up putting a washer in front, instead of behind, the intermediate gear twixt starter motor and starter clutch - OOOOPS! This resulted in a mechanical lock up. Luckily now remedied and no damage done. This is what happens when you guess instead of looking in the manual - lesson learnt. lol
