Even with the complete re-fresh over the winter I guess my old girl is not immune to the VFR gremlins. I have about 3,000 miles since performing every service known to man and she has been flawless. 2 weeks ago me and the wife went from here in Lindsay, Ok. to Masterson, Tx. for a family reunion. Her on the Magna and me on the Viffer. We rode around the Dumas area and outlying parts while up there. Total of 800 miles that weekend. Constant 85 mph while on I-40 in 90 degree + heat and she never came up more than 188 until we slowed down in towns. She would creep up to 212, fan would kick in, and drop her to 205, fan off. Even riding around in Dumas, once she got rid of her heat soak from the highway riding, she would stay around 195 while cruising about 30 mph. All indications of a properly working cooling system.
I had no complaints. I have never seen some of the temps that others get even when sitting in traffic. However, this past weekend we went from here to Anadarko and Chickasha Lake. I had my head planted and was just enjoying the ride when I realized that I had missed our turn. We had just left town so I knew the fan was on at the last stop light. After that light she started to cool down like normal and I just payed attention to the scenery. When I made the u-turn to go back to the place I needed to turn, I noticed the fan was still running. Looked at the temp gauge and she was at 185. WT*&^%. I stopped, and turned her off. After a minute or so I fired her back up and the fan was off. Ok, maybe just a fluke but I kind of new better. The further I rode the more she did this. I also noticed that even after getting up to speed is was harder for her to cool back down, proving the point that the fan does work a little against the airflow that the engineers designed into the bike. But, it works well when the system is working and I am not going to change a thing except, replace that dang, sorry, stupid, pain in the butt, (%#@*^ sticking termo switch.
Bottom line, it is usually a case of the fan not kicking in, but it can also happen in reverse.
