So my '93 needs a new air filter - last time I used a stock replacement but was thinking about switching to K&N or (?). Local bike mechanic recommends against K&N. Would appreciate some feedback on what you use and why you do or do not like it. My bike is otherwise stock with the only mod. I am considering is a slip-on. (Budgets y'know...)

The reason for the negative on K&N is that there have been many reports about the "holes" in the filter element that could allow large pieces of dirt/debris through to the engine. Personally I have not seen this on my filter and I hope not to, but none the less this is the one big reason. The other is that the K&N is also reported to not be as free flowing as it should be, even compared to a stock filter. Now this could all just be hearsay and/or just propaganda against K&N so you may have to investigate this yourself but that is the word on the street.
That being said, one of the key features of a K&N air filter, and a few other re-usable filters, is cost savings over time. Having to only buy the filter once and be able to clean and re-oil it time after time would suggest that you only repetitive cost would be for the cleaner and oil, which should last you for at least a few cleanings, versus having to buy the stock filter every time you do air filter maintenance. Some riders swear by K&N, some by BMC and others Piper Cross, it's sort of like oil, and tires, which ever brand your most comfortable with, is probably the one for you. I would love to see a comparison, using test equipment on the different air filters, using the stock as a baseline. I'm sure there's one that exist, I'm just too lazy to go looking. :rolleyes:

I am a K&N flag waver. I have them on several vehicles with incident. Replacing my stock filter with said K&N and (probably more importantly) desnorkeling the box gave my 91 a nice intake growl under throttle. Yes, I'm probably the only one that can hear it, but I'm okay with that!

The OEM filter does not need to be replaced every service, you simply blow it out with compressed air. It will continue to filter air efficiently with no restriction on air flow.
It also fits properly. The K&N requires a messy cleaning procedure followed by oiling of the element. K&N also can't seem to figure out how to make it work without removing the airtight rubber gasket.

Buy a non-oem paper one and think of buying another in 40k or so..... they donot cost a fortune
