HELP!!! DAMN Gremlins...

Guys... i have searched and searched and have not found a related problem like the one I have. My 07 Is giving me a fit. Out of the blue my horn, turn signals and running lights. stopped working. The bike runs fine and there are no other issues. So here is what i've done.
The 10amp fuse running that circuit is blown, so the question is why is it blown. I have not added any accesories or changed the bike in anyway for this to happen. I replaced the the 10amp hoping it was a glitch....NOT. Blown again. Checked all of the harness and there are no obvious issues there. Bumped up to a 15amp to see what would happen...BLOWN!. Went up to a 20amp fuse...it didn't blow...BUT...
Get this now when I turn on the left turn signalthe running light kills out and no blinking occurs. When I turn on the right turn signal it blinks but also changes the right set of headlights from a regular intesity to low intesity. WTF!!! So I threw a new turn/horn relay at it...nothing. same problem.
It gets better, if I disconnect the head lights it works fine! I have looked at all the basic stuff and it looks normal to me. Granted I know just enough about electrical stuff to be dangerous.
I have to more hair to pull out on this issue... Anybony have any sugestions for me?
I am considering taking to the dealer but, I live in the stix and I seriously question their abilities.

Get a multimeter and a wiring diagram.  Isolate and test.  Start with one system like left blinker and test for voltage, continuity, or shorts.  Go from the fuse to switch to bulb.  It could be a wire insulation rubbed through and is grounding, a broken or fried component.  Test all systems on that fuse.

Understand how the system works and test it to find what is not right.  Or try your luck with the dealer.

The O7 may be different from the 99 5th gen but when that happened to me, there was a short on the rear brake lever at the point where the brake wires plug into the brake lever switch.  They are two small spade connectors that have a boot insulator over them and one of them wore through and intermittently touched the handlebar thus grounding it.

As far as the other gremlins that showed up when you upped the amperage of the fuse, that could be a result of a fuse that should be blowing (the 10 amp) being replaced with the 20 that isn't blowing and causing a voltage fluctuation in the system that promotes those gremlins.

Look for that short I described.  It is hard to see because it could be just a pin hole like mine was.

Electrics can be a pain & time consuming to find problems, you need to not complicate things, only look at components within the circuit the fuse is blowing. Just one thing on the 6th gen have a look at the rear tail light wire it can rub & earth on the bkt.

Thanks guys. All good suggestions. I will try the voltage thing however I'm not exctly sure what I'll be looking for with the multimeter. I also do not know how to read a wiring diagram but I am will to learn.
I have a diagram from the service manual. Is that good enough? The service manual is from a 02. There are alot of similar things but it is not exactly the same, so im worried the wiring diamgram might be different. I downloaded the manual from here. I was being cheap cuz the manual for my year is over 100 bucks!
This does sound like a very involved job so i will probably wait until the riding season is over.

The 2002 manual is very differnt on color coding of wiring than your 07, you may get some basics out of it though. Your blowing fuses , so use the ohmeter and check contunity to frame between all the circuits connected to that fuse, that arent supposed to be grounded.  Did you do any work on the bike prior to this happening, look in that area for short?

Sorry about issues. Have you thought about looking In Youtube fir some basic info on the procedure?? You may be able to get started faster this way and use some of the good folks' instructions in the messages above.

It was not easily found but I had a short in the wiring going to the headlights that wraps around the upper fairing stay on the front left hand side.  I had to pull the wire ties and connectors loose to get enough slack so I could inspect it.  I'd also suggest an '07 wiring diagram instead of the '02 you mentioned.  You also might want to check your horn switch to make sure it's not shorting.  I'd get a box of 10amp fuses and start disconnecting turn signals, horn, etc one at a time to see if you might be able to isolate it.

I feel your pain. Earlier this year I experienced a very similar problem with my '06. All the same components you had referred to shared a similar circuit. After staring at the wire diagrams of my service manual I determined I'd have to remove the front fairing / head lamp assembly to inspect the wires.

A wire had chaffed on a sharp edge in the front of the bike. I'll post pics when get off work. The actual "hole" in the wire was small like a pin head but large enough to short each time I tried to engage my right blinker. Until that chest thumping discovery was made, I was in constant dispair. Try your best to find your problem on your own. I KNOW you can do it. The alternative of paying a shop to repair this and re assemble everything correctly was not an option for me.

Get a wiring diagram and stare at until it begins to make sense. I was able to solve this problem, you certainly can too.

License plate light too? I had to replace mine due to corrosion.
How long does it take to blow a fuse? Do you have to ride the bike or just start it up?

I had a similar problem (blowing fuses) after I replaced all my halogen headlight bulbs with (cheap, eBay) xenon bulbs. Every time I switched on the high beams the headlight fuse would blow. With the left high beam bulb disconnected (connector pulled off), however, the fuse did not blow. Examining the left high beam bulb, I noticed that inside the bulb, one of the two filament supports had bent over and had welded itself to the other filament support, hence bypassing the filament, creating a super low resistance, super high current circuit. A new bulb fixed the problem. I hope your solution will be something as simple as this.
