Score! 8 Spoke Rim Aquired

I just got lucky on a ebay listing "Make an Offer" and scored an 8 spoke wheel. I can see in the pictures that it is going to need blasted and powder coated. And I am actually cool with that. It will give me an excuse to change the color of my rims! 

Originally I was just thinking of going to the Honda silver color. But for some reason an image popped in my head. Remember the old American Racing 5 spokes?

Can powder coating places do silver and then dark grey 2 tones? Anyone ever asked about that? Also, when you take your wheels to a powder coater, do you have to have the tires off for them?

btw - there is a great wheel finisher place in Kettering and can do about anything you want.

I don't know about the two-tone but you have to have the tires off and for the front, the bearings and dust seals removed as well.

I was planning on keeping it mello, you just never know when you might need it. You already have a 5 spoke though, why would you want a second? Same reason as me?

Oh, and I also scored a set of BLS lowerblocks. The wife is going to be so pissed when this stuff comes in! Where is the wheel finisher?

- The wheel place is off David road. They mostly focus on car wheels, but will do bike wheels too. Name escapes me for the moment, jeez only been there 50 times. :rolleyes:

They can powder coat 2 tones but the lines aren't tight by any means. It more like blobs together, and my guy wouldn't do it just because it would look like cheap. Best way to make it happen with powder coat is to powder it the main color and have someone paint the other color on it.

Also, you might want to consider replacing the rotor bolts since they are torque bolts. My mechanic tried to use the same bolts and one snapped in the process of putting it back on. But that's your call. I did it because it dealt with my brakes, which I personally think are important.

Most powder coat shops probably don't have a tire machine. I waited till my bike needed new shoes, so I could save a little coin in the process.

Polish the lips of the rims and powdercoat the centers?

Dude, it's getting bad. I no longer have dreams about my wife leaving me or cheating on me. I have nightmares of losing my bike or riding something different. 

I can't ride this weekend, I am going to be working the Hillclimb in Oregonia along with the setup and tear down crews. Plus I am covered in poison ivy from working the mowing crews.

Ah, I see what you are saying about the two tone. Sounds like a job for plastidip!

Oh - in case anyone recognizes those pictures from ebay - I didn't buy the swingarm so I didn't pay the $600!

A local powdercoater did some for a buddy of mine. They turned out pretty good. The lines aren't as perfect as paint, but they weren't blobs either. Overall they were pretty good. Black centers and red edges. Instead of his normal $100/set, I think he charged $150/set because of the extra time and work.

Tires have to be removed along with bearings, valve stems, wheel weights, etc. When I had the guy do my wheels silver, I had him do the rotor centers black too, instead of the gold.

If you do polish the edges, you can have the clear coated afterwards to prevent the oxidation.

wera - dude... that Superhawk is awesome! I've not seen one with the bottom/chin fairing before. Really sharp looking!

Sounds like I just need to talk to the powder coating places and see how much they charge and maybe see some examples of their work.

I also didn't think about the wheel weights and stuff. Going to have to go to the Honda stealership to get them mounted and balanced. 

I had my tires prepped, mounted/balanced, and replaced all components including bolts done by the stealership for a little under $150

Good luck on the wheels. I'm sure you'll be extremely happy with whatever color(s) you choose

I've got no oxidation on my polished rims, standard 5th gen rear, SP2 front, after 5 years. Mind you they are very dirty. Clear coat is unneccesary IMHO

here is spray bomb with NO preparation.  worst case is it doesn't turn out OK and you powder them anyway

I've had good luck with wheel paint from the spray can.  Your could polish out the outer portion of the wheel, rattle can the inner, then clear the whole thing.  $20, no oxidation, and you got the scheme you want.

That might be worth a shot. At worse, it will just look like crap when I take it to be blasted and coated!

Wheel came in today and it seems to be in decent condition. No bubbles, no visible corrosion... but lots of rock dings and flaked off paint. I talked to a powder coating company that turns out is right around the corner from my work. $125 to blast and coat the wheel and it is done the next day.

Now I just need to pull the front wheel off, remove the disc's and bearing, then get the tires off all three of my wheels before taking them down to be done.

It seems I have a problem with rescues. Bike was definitely a fixxer-upper, same with the high mount can, now the wheel. I seriously think I would be better off buy new sometimes!

Will the powder coater be able to do the two tone look you were after?
