Ok, I had a starnge thing hapening whit my 5th gen today riding home from work. As I let warm up the speed o needle did jump up one time, and as I started rideing the speedo didnt show any readins, also odo didnt count the distanse. After riding a km all started working agan, and did so for about 20km, the the odo/speedo died again, for about 4-5km, then alive again. As I paased a few trucks it died again and now the FI light also lighted. The bike still was running fine. The odo did come on for a short distanse but the rest 15km it was dead, the FI light was on all way home as it had lightned. As I arived home I turned off ignition and then on again and started the engine. FI light was no longer on. At work during lunch I had washed the bike, gave it a good clean it needed bad after the last days of rain. I did not use a powerwasher. I have a Powercomander and a speedhealer. I wounder if the speedhealer might have goot some water in it or the conections and it made the problem? I did try to get as mutch mud/dirt from under the tail of the bike, so it was werry wet under the seat, where the Speedhealer and PC is located. I had all plastic off (aside top head faring) at home to chack connections as the orange connector (located at left subframe) that seem to be corroded in some 5th gens, but all seem fine, so I put on a stock size front sprocket and tock the speedhealer away. I hope all will work tomorrow as I ride to work, no time to check it by a ride this evening. I had a starnge thing hapening also during simmer, as stoping to take more clothes on as temps drop during evening, as I tryed to start the engine again, all when flat like the batter whent flat, then second later it comes alive and starter runns and engine comes alive. It did however reset clock as zero the odo (not total, just trip readings). Strange things my girl is doing.................

You may have already solved your problem with water in the speedo connections... let us know how it turns out.

The bike going dark when trying to start then coming back to life and starting but with a zeroed odo and clock are the exact symptoms I had when my battery was going bad on my y2k.  I changed the battery and it has been fine; except one time it happened again after the bike had idled for a long time with the fan on ( i was synching the starter valves and setting the idle) and didn't take it for a ride afterwards... my wife requested my presence and I had to stop what I was doing...  went back to restart the bike and didn't have enough juice to turn over causing the clock and odo resets.

Seems the speedo works as it should again, riding whit stock gearing again did some taking used to, but as I only commute to work whit my VFR nowdays, its still ok. Migth give me some better milage, even it has not been bad at all whit the lower gearing.

My battery is 3 years old, maybe 4. Last year the VFR was sitting all season, had battery off and recharged regulary. I see no sign its in bad condission. As I buoght it I had a simalar problem, but then it just didnt start at all after a coffie break, had to be bush startted. Changed the battery then as the r/r. Now the problem was it blacked out then a second (or ½ a second) later starts normally. What I do wounder is of the starter motor can get to tight whit engine hot so it would not turn easally?

Exact same thing happened when my battery was on the way out. Replaced and never had the issue again.

Could also be your speedo pick up sensor. Its either dirty, or the rotor has parted ways with the spinny gear from the g'box.

My 2000 had very similar issues not long after I first purchased the bike.  When I bought the bike, the battery was brand new and everything was fine for the first 3 or 4 months.  Then I noticed one morning that the bike did not want to start and cranked very slugishly.  Checked the battery with a multimeter and it was down to 12.2 VDC and I had ridden it almost 30 km's the night before.  I checked all the connections, wiring connectors to the R/R, the grounds, etc, etc, etc.  After searching this site and VFRW for an answer I narrowed it down to a bad R/R.  I was not getting quite enough charge coming through the R/R and every time I stopped and shut the bike off, the ODO and clock would reset.  Might be a good time to check the charging system and be sure everything is up to snuff.

When I was checking trying to check the charging system on my bike, this thread was an immense help to me.  Check it out and see what happens.

Well, as i buoght the bike back in 2009 or was in 2010, anyway. First season it had same problem, eventually I had to push start the bike to get home. Then I did chage the R/R (as battery), so as I have ridden that season, and 2 more (been sitting one season to), and milage a year is not that mutch, I dont feel the R/R could get bad that fast. I live in a region where high temps is usually not a issue, so the R/R is not easally running way hot. Might be now the Battery is just tired, from what other say. It holds charge good ower long periods on no use thro, so thats why I´m sceptical. I do wounder if any of you have had the starter motor apart, if the probelm could be there, or one other thing that i think of us the starter relay.

Do you have the speedo healer top speed recal button installed ? Mine did this when we got caught in a monsoon style rainstorm at the NW200 a few months back kept doing in on my 350 mile ride home ! I disconnected the recal switch & problem solved. The switch they use is a very poor design & got water in the heat shrink :( It just doesn't seem to dry out ! So I need to rig up a new one.

One of the other things I have done recently was to install a digital LCD voltmeter so that I can keep an eye on what the charging system is doing. I have noticed that when I drive back and forth to work, the morning commute is fine, but when I go to head home the temps can get up to the high 30's Celcius (high 90's Fahrenheit) and whenever the cooling fan kicks in the voltage drops about 0.2 to 0.4 VDC. The thought has come to mind that I may also be due for a new stator. I have heard some people on the site mention that stator problems can sometimes show up more when the bike is running hot as there can be a problem in the windings somewhere that only seems to show up when the bike is warm. Maybe check the VAC at the stator connector once you have gone for a longer ride and the bike is good and warm. As I recall they should be (pin to pin) around 17 VAC at idle and upwards of 60 VAC at 5000 RPM.

R/R problem.

Nuff said, carry on ~
