cold here in Brisbane the last couple days, and it seems my battery decided to give out. I was already away from home; I had to roll it down a hill to restart, and I guess our bikes don't recharge? or the battery is truly dead?
Anyway, I'm at work, bike is in a garage parking space, and I have to figure out what to do.

got a charge from the road side assistance: >13V
started bike, ran fine then shut off after about a minute: <12V
put it on charger for about 10 minutes: took charge and seemed to hold.
got a tow home, started bike, ran for a few minutes fine.
the mechanic's idea was the charging system, not the battery.
now i have to investigate on here for likely causes.
It could very well be the charging system. Look around for one of the many threads on how to check if it's the charging system. Just need a multimeter.

the wife and i are buying a voltmeter this weekend, so I can start to troubleshoot my problem. i feel like i should just replace connectors, add vfrness etc. ... since the bike'll be naked and out of service.
Keep this up and the stator or regulator (or both) will burn.
Get a new battery as your has a short in a few cells.
Key off/on should be at least 12.4V
A battery only lasts like 5 years, I'm sure yours has died. Don't play further with this thing, it may kill a lot more, get a new one.

keep up what? I'm not actually riding the bike now until everything has been sorted. I suspect I'll replace the battery no matter what (because I don't like the crappy aftermarket one in there now).
