Guess I shouldn't expect anything else when you're getting sloppy seconds   :comp13:

So many months ago, CC and MC made a big trip zigzagging all over delivering and picking up.

(get on part deux!!)

While he was here, I mentioned that I had a spare VF500F engine that I was going to cannibalize for parts. I was going to swap it in the VF500C, but I saw that an intake valve was broken. So we stood around and watched MC take the head that didn't have the broken valve for their own projects.

Finally got around to getting a workbench for the new apartment. Took time today to take the other head off. This is about how things went.

Get the valve cover and camshafts off.

Hmmm...there should be a valve over there, and I shouldn't be able to compress that spring by hand...

Well, the other pistons look pretty nice. Let me pop these heads off and see how the other set looks.

What the......

I didn't really want to look, but I sort of had to...

Screw that. I'll go work on the F2, and I'll start with draining the carbs.

St. Patty's day must have come early. Guess that means it's beer o'clock.

And that's how I make every project a career.

I don't understand.

This looks like it came from a science fiction movie where aliens shoots slime that can eat through anything!!!

Is that the engine that was originally in the 500C you bought from Motorhead?

ps - Yoshi, you need to pick better projects!

#5

One of these is not like the others, eh?

Y'know, now I'm really afraid of what that VFR750 engine has in store for me.

No, that isn't the engine from motorhead. Considering the oil out of the exhaust valve I'm not sure if his engine is going to be that much better.

That's the engine from some other masshole named Eric Barbato. The engine was supposed to be running, and he did have a ton of other VF/VFR engines. AVOID BUYING FROM HIM. Fair warning.

Funny thing is that when I looked at the camshaft it looked fine. But those pictures give a whole new meaning to "grenade in engine".

I would give a 10 out of 10 for the caption of this thread true Dutchy material    :goofy:

Can you tell if it was an exhaust or intake valve that failed first? I have photos from 6 failed VF500 engines and from these it's always the exhaust valve that fails. While this is still a bummer, it might be useful to someone who wants to swap valves and springs for new, if they can find them.

#9

That's the idea. I need the valves and tappets for the VF500C and the VTR250 engine. I was just hoping for more than four valves which may or may not be good.

#10

A bit of Devcon and a file?

Seriously I'm sorry you had that unpleasant surprise. I can't imagine how long that engine must have run after dropping the valve. Are they fitted with FM radios in the US?

#11

WOW  what  can  you  say  but  sorry  for   your  troubles  and  better  days  ahead     I   Hope  .....

#12

Bummer!  Any chance you could send us the head studs and the valve cover? While the valves are the same diameter between 500F and 500C (and we are swapping 500F cams to your head), the fact that the 500C utilizes studs means that the head bolts from the 500F wont pass the ridge where the cam cover mounts and that means that the 500F cam cover wont mount the better head that we happened upon in your shed. :goofy:

Seriously, sorry that engine was crap but we have been unable to take advantage of your generosity with the front head we snagged and will put in the mail to you. Did you finally receive your front stand that we borrowed for the "who can take the longest route to New Paltz Tour of 2013?

#13

Yes, we have received the front stand. Give me a buzz.

Remember, that engine in the shed was an F engine. Almost exactly identical to the C engine. The heads are showing as the same part number, as well as the internals I've looked at. That head should work for you.

I don't really care that the spare engine grenaded itself. I was just pretty shocked at the damage. Never seen anything like it in person. I just wanted the valves and misc parts off the head to fix the baby magna and the VTR engine. Now I just have to hope that I don't need more than 2 intakes and 2 exhausts, but I can still buy them new worse case.

**Edit. Nevermind on the engines being the same. The 85 and 86 are pretty different. The F engine is an 86 IIRC. The magna is an 85.

+1  :1:    .........it did get my attention!

Wow. The damage to that cylinder and its head is amazing.

I can't imagine how the engine kept running long enough for it to melt down that bad. :goofy:
