5Th Gen Bolt On Tail Swap?

Ok, so the bike is apart. Checking items off the list one by one. Looked at many tail swaps on the site. What is the closest to a bolt on tail swap for my 5th Gen? Lean and mean is what I am looking for.

Santa may have to bring me a welder?

What do you guys think...

#2

almost anything is possible...we mounted a 7G tail to a 5G....

#3

I think if you are looking to just change the plastic, but not the subframe, 5th and 6th gen could be easiest. Not sure, because i haven't done it.

If you are willing to weld, i put a ninja 250 seat and subframe on mine. Cut the tabs off the OEM subframe, weld them to the baby ninja subbie, and away you go.It's a bit more involved than that, but still pretty easy. PaladinReed is in the process of putting an 848 seat on his.

To do it right, there will be power tools involved.

Yea but seems like I would need about 7 sub frames, seats and tails in front of me with a tape measure. Mock up, fit, trial and error. I don't mind that, I just need the best ideas that will work.

No problem with tools. I just don't have measurements and the options in my hands scratch and sniff fit.

or you need to show up at a dealer with a tape measure, digital camera, and notebook.

or a bike night.

Yea, I know. Looking for the easy way out. Get one of these, drill holes here, bolts go here and fit the plastics. Well, research goes on. The girls butt just dates her a bit.

it really will require about the same amount of work no matter what you choose so you select the rear that speaks to you.

You will have to either cut the donor rear subframe and mount your hacked front anchor points to it or cut and weld heim joints to the new sub frame for some adjustment in attitude as you fit the new plastics.

Just remember that last big pot hole you couldn't avoid and make sure that you have the subframe attached securely by at least 4 points and that it does not rack when you try to move the bike around using it a lever.

You will have your own and it will be really cool!

I have a few strong candidates. Looking forward to it.

finding a tweaked 5G rear subframe from ePay or a salvage yard would be a good place to start....you will have the security of having your good stock unit if it all comes apart as you are building and it will also allow you to use the front for fabbing your franken-frame...

Thinking 929 at the moment. Love that ass. I think I saw Seb use fabed "adapters" I want to keep the tabs on the main frame intact and also keep the original sub frame intact to sit on a shelf. The 929 looks like a cut here, a spacer there, blah, blah, blah...

I really think a 929 as on the VFR would be a good match up.

Stay tuned

Hey Austin

If you wanted to add a 6th gen tail to your 5th gen, here is a link to a 6th gen tail swap that was done by one of the guys over on VFRW. Turned out pretty good IMHO and looks really nice. The thread itself is really long (11 pages) but it might be worth having a look.

http://vfrworld.com/forums/showthread.php/36725-T3-Tinks-Annual-Project-Bike-(-98-VFR800)

That guy deserves a medal for bringing that back to the living. The tail does look good. :idea3: Lots to think about.

Thanks Zoom

I had a few on my short list as well, mostly small capacity stuff - kawasaki ninja 250, aprillia rs125 (looks a bit like the RSV4, but smaller), yamaha R125... All of these bikes are learner legal bikes in australia, so finding crashed ones isn't that hard.

I went with the ninja because a mate bought one to wreck, so i got seat and subframe cheap. The width of the subframes is near enough to identical, which meant that mounting it was pretty easy, all things considered. The tails from smaller capacity bikes are shorter and narrower than ones from bigger bikes, but still have full size seats. The ninja seat is about 150mm (6 inches) shorter than the 5th gen VFR. It makes the rear tyre look fatter, and shortens the look of the whole bike.I'm also using a battery that fits in the ninja 250 battery box, but with decent CCA. No problems with a smaller (physical) battery starting the vfr.

I didn't check any of this beforehand, i just got lucky. If you are going to take measurements of bikes before you choose, I'd just worry about the width. Adjusting mount points up and down is easy. Making them wider becomes harder to get them to look nice.

#14

The good thing about the vfr I have found is that it is pretty narrow with the v4 motor configuration.

You can adapt smaller factory subframes more easily this way to the mounting points on the vfr frame and adjust height and length to taste.

I'm loving the look so far of the 848 subframe but trust me if I had the chance to build a solo tail bike I'd build my vfr with an rc51 race tail and a high left exit pipe. It's a clean, light, oem HRC solution to the factory unit and would look tits

Good luck finding that special one

#15

Does the tail need to have passenger capabilities or is a solo tail section alright? Fabricating a small subframe for a solo race tail is a good weight saving option. Just a thought.

Another thing to consider is the shape of the seat and how it will blend with the tank. Some bike seats might work very well as is, whereas others might require significant modification and recovering to look good. I did some photoshop work with some tail swaps and seats to see how they looked on my project before buying parts. The speed triple seat fit very well on my 4th gen with just small amount of heat gun work to match the tank better.

A few quick photo chops for fun:

After looking around for a while at sub frames I think Paladinreed is on to the right path. The RC51 sub frame looks reasonably close in construction and design, and damn good looking. I think I saw a 4th gen with that tail in past post.

They are not as common as others so price is an issue but looks to be a reasonable mod.

Nice photo shop work Apex!

I think Santa is gonna need to do some weight training if you expect him to stuff me in a stocking and schlep me to NJ.

ps - shoot me a text, I had to wipe my phone and lost your personal #.

2001-2003 CBR600F4i would be a close fit IMO. Tail is a bit leaner than 929 as well. Seat is decent vs the plank on the RC.

#19

Now that is why I associate with you engineer types. I think we got it :cheerleader: . The F4i is very similar to the RC, more common and therefore parts are more easily nabbed for cheap. That is the plan...

#20

I have a spare F4i taillight somewhere... Will have to check my inventory.

#21

I think the Catskill need a mc junkyard !!!!!

#22

With overlapping subframes it looks like the F4i subframe will need to be cropped back but it looks to be close.

FleaBay has what I need, let the games begin.

stay with the sexiest ass in the business:

#24

Threw a few more photochops together. The F4i subframe will definitely be longer than needed. If you were to keep the f4i seat at stock height the lower subframe rail looks close to lining up with the lower VFR subframe mount. I have no real idea about the upper... nevermind width. But it is food for thought. The second pic is of the f4i seat unit raised a little so the bodywork matches the tank a little better.

And the RC51 tail cause Timmy is so persuasive.

The tail sections should be pretty close to the same scale as the VFR, as well as their stock seat angles.

#25

Huge smile on my face looking at the renderings you did Apex! Printing those out and on the shop wall they go for reference. Very nice!!!

I do like the RC just as much but the lines get choppy at the intersection with the tank. The F4i is a bit more clean and definitely could pass for stock. I like the modifications that leave people, common folk, wondering what it is. Subtle to they eye but effective. When complete with other things I am doing it will look and feel lighter, lower and more sleek.

Thanks for your efforts.

Timmy,

If you really think the RC should go on her please send parts to 602 wedge.....

Thanks

#26

I think the F4i is a great choice of a more modern tail that still flows with the bike. Have fun!

Just a mock up at this point till the subframe and other parts show up. This thing may end up a street fighter by the time winter is over.

My 2c though, the seat unit needs to go up a bit like Seb said, and it also needs to be a bit shorter than the back tyre , it looks too long to me. The shape of the tail looks great with the tank, though. Can't wait to watch the progress.

I agree with the overall length of the tail section and that visually the plumb line of the back wheel should not be exceeded, at a maximum. That has been jumping out at me. I will have to modify the tail to shorten it. Because of the wedge shape this is a challenge. I will stare at this for awhile today and try to solve it. 2C always welcome.

Let's leave my "Dowel" out of this. Lol.

I don't want to "Stink bug" the ass of this too high in the air. With the subframe on, I will have to find that perfect height.

#33

For aesthetic purposes, my opinion for the perfect height is for when the passenger seat or seat cowl top, lines up near perfectly with the top of the fuel tank both in height and angle like this RC45.

I've never really understood the whole streetfighter tail up in the air thing, but if someone wants to explain it I'm all ears. Presumably something to do with ground clearance in wheelies or sitting comfortably for really long wheelies I guess.

I cant wait till more parts come in to bring this further along. I somewhat agree with the level line from the tank to the top of tail. To me that is the "neutral" line. I will want to just go above that a bit to give the crouching, or pouncing look.

I know this isn't perforance stuff but the devil is in the details.

Performance is in the process too.

#36

Interesting project.

One of the reasons the arse in the air thing was more popular in Europe, and especially Germany, was because they have massive number plates,if the seat unit is high, you can attach the plate to it, so it looks much better from the side. I think there's also a bit of "F you, i'll do what i want" thrown in, too.

I'm not a fan of the germanic tails myself, but i think you need some height with the tail - a nice big gap between the tail and back tyre makes everything look more aggressive. the RC45 has a nice line at the top of the tank and top of the seat, but it's a classic look, same as the yammie RZ. It looks nice, but they don't look modern or aggressive.

With a minimal gap between tyre and seat, i reckon a bike looks visually heavy.

You can fake it with paint, too, both of the attached pics use paint to make the lines a bit sharper - both have diagonal lines from belly pan to the tail to tie it all together.

#38

I had to compromise a touch on the tail of my naked VFR because I knew if I angled the rear any higher I would have a slight slant into the tank that would ruin comfort for me. I wanted a little more angle but after 5000km this year Im very glad I compromised. Some tails obviously have higher sections behind the main seat that lend themselves better to being level with the top of the tank, and I do think usually this looks best. But there are other bikes that I think look great with a lower seat than level with the tank. This one comes to mind:

#39

@Keef: Yeah, it is kind of a classic look.. I can agree with that but it does sort of work with newer models too..

take this 2007 CBR1k as example (07 being my favourite year for CBR bodywork, 600 included). The height of the tail in this case is just a tiny bit higher than the tank but the angle is sloping forward by the same amount both on the tail and the tank.

Since the VFR tank angles down just a little that means you can lift the tail higher to keep the lines matching, but further up than this would just look silly imo:

Well then I think you are missing an aspect of what these machines are to some of us. I see them as art, each piece, and the whole, is a sculpture that someone created as a solution to a problem or aesthetic idea. Every curve or piece would not exist unless a person created it in the same way that a painting is created. I ask you, is the Golden Gate bridge just a way to get cars across a river? CUE MUSIC! Is the Ducati 916 just a thing to ride? a tool? ... Even a hammer has an aesthetic that can be appreciated in the eyes of some but its intent is just to hit a nail.

I ride. But I also sit and stare at my motorcycle(s) because I like to appreciate good design/art. IMHO

#41
Even a hammer has an aesthetic that can be appreciated in the eyes of some

LOL, I bought the little Harbor Fright hammer. You got me.

Actually I do like to eye the machinery, and the Italians have some good designers.

Maybe it's something in the pasta. Or the vino.

It's art, but better. Because it works and is fun to ride too. Plain old art just sits there.

#42

Just got the CBR600F4i subframe last night. I started mock things up further with most parts in place. Seat, tail section and subframe. It looks like all the parts want to play well together. It may be a "Bolt on" in some respects but by no means without effort because of the way that I want to do it.

I actually used the subframe from the single seat tail, not the subframe that matches the tail I will be using. I really just wanted the base of the subframe.

I will be reshaping the solo section of the tail . I do not like the overall length. Chop, nip and tuck then glass over top.I will never have a passenger so this is not a consideration to the end result.

It will be hard finding time to work on this in the coming weeks. Arggg! considering holiday functions, vacation away from home, cold and lack of lighting at my storage unit.

Pics when I have something interesting to look at...

#43

I cut up the subframe and am very satisfied with the way things are fitting together. Funny how the parts tell you how they want to fit sometimes. The angles are great but you can't tell from the pic because of the rear stand. The seat fits fantastic.

Crappy pic for now.

Hard to find time to obsess on this.

I need to fab a subframe tray for the electrics and customize the F4i tail section.

Today was good to really figure out the bulk of fitting everything.

#45

Started the tail section. Had to fiberglass most of the tail to create a solo and crop the overall length. General shape and first coat of bondo is on.

Subframe and tray are complete. Just need some finishes and tapping final mounting fasteners.

No welding. Bolt on tail. I also finished the complete VTR1000 front swap. I changed clip-ons, levers, triples, everything at the front is VTR.

All bodywork is going back on. I fought the urge to Streetfighter it.

#46

Very good call on shortening the tail! Gives the bike a much more modern shape. I thought the subframe rails would come close to lining up with the bolts! Even the width was good? Amazing

#47

Hey Andy,

The width needed to be massaged a little. I kept measuring my way back till the subframe rail spacing met up with the existing bolt holes. Believe it or not the CBR seat gave me the angle to set the subframe. The bottom needed to have about 3/16" taken off of the insides. The top is shimmed about a 1/2" on each side. You're rendering was accurate. After all the measuring was done, cuts and drilling, it is a no weld bolt on swap which could go back to original if one ever wanted.

If I had used the CBR battery tray and didn't modify the tail, I would be done by now.

You should never fight that urge. Just give in to it and join ussss.

The tail looks great, by the way. I reckon the exhaust needs to go even higher now to open up the space between the wheel and the seat unit.

Or lower of course, like a GP style shorty.

Any nip and tuck planned for the side fairings? There's an awful lot of acreage there as compared to modern machines...

Hey Kevin,

I like the shapes of the side fairings, so no plan to modify them. As most of you have been reading, a streetfighter isn't far away for me so the side fairings may just go off all together someday.

My YZF750R is an option also for the streetfighter someday too.

#55

Impressive, have you sorted out a tail light design or just gonna steal the F4i setup?

There's plenty of room on the back there to make/fit an integrated light. Personally I hate the look of indicators that stick out either side

#56

Really going minimal. I have a plate bracket with signals that I may hang off the bottom of the tail. The tail light and brake may be added to that.

I don't have much room inside the back of the tail and don't want to hack up my creation. One of a kind and all ; )

Still thinking about it.

Thanks for the feedback, as always.

#57

looks brilliant. very one-piece rc30 esque.

#58

What about something like this?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/290771655785

Maybe not exactly that one, but something similar, would require like 2 or 3 small screw holes for mounting and one for wiring.. I used a similar thing on my old 250, just hacked it apart to make it fit how I wanted

I'm not sure how the underside of your tail is, but if my assumption is correct you might even be able to use weatherproof double sided tape and run the wiring underneath?

Not knocking his work but I feel a more modern look is to scale down the tail section. I think the angles of the pictures aren't doing the bike any favors. The tail looks long for the bike. As a matter of fact, every "stock" tail swap I have seen looks too long to me, with exception to Veefer's low displacement doner, I like the light look of his.

I hope to get some paint on the parts and put it all back together this weekend.

Agreed about moving it forward. You'd have to mod the seat base, and refoam/recover.

Something needs to be done about that gap.

Again, no disrespect to the builder but... The subframe, from what I can tell, is the original. If I had to make a generalization, I think the back of the tank to the back of the rear tire is relatively short on a 5th Gen. Leaving little room to work with without modifying the overall length.

I think his approach was to not modify the major components such as the forks and the subframe. although, he gutted the back end to get that exhaust in there. Bravo on that one!

Colored chains make me vomit

[image: post-25867-0-72912100-1391374232.jpg]I was able to get some work done.

The paint still needs work but I had to start to inspire me. Wet sanding and a clear still to come.

I need to add an exhaust bracket.

Bolt in the RR,it is going to be attached to the underside of the Alu. seat pan, in that pocket between the tail and the pan. It should get great airflow there.

That is looking really nice. Thinking that painting the lower black would look good. Maybe? Like the bottom part below the Honda decal.

The mid pipe & can need a little nip/tuck action now... angled up & pulled into the bike a bit more.

If you chop it and mark it, I can weld it back together for you

What's the round hole in the tray for?

+1 looking great, and +1 for a black bellypan

The wires to the RR will run through there. The RR sits just at the edge of the underside of the fiberglass tail. I know it is a unique location but I feel it will be sitting in an air scoop, of sorts.

HaHa, want to find a good maggot to kick out the side. Till then I suffer

The tail makes it look stretched a tad, kinda mean looking here where i normally can't stand extended swing arms. Cut the can down, its a cheap option. Good job!

#84

Have you decided on a taillight yet?

#85

Looking killer man. The subframe came out really nice. I think the can could stand to come toward the front of the bike a couple of inches and up toward the tail a couple of inches as well. I understand wanting to wait until you have the right pipe however.

Otherwise I agree with incorporating just a bit more black on the forward fairings somewhere low, and maybe a black fender?

Any way you end up going I'm sure it's going to be a looker!

If I were to be so bold as to offer a suggestion, how about a shorty CF can from Delkevic. The slightly shorter can might make the tail of the bike look a bit shorter and would add a bit of darker color to the back of the bike. Normally I am a fan of the brighter style cans like aluminum, or polished stainless but I think the CF would add to the overall aggressive look of the bike. Here is a link to the Delkevic site for the can I mentioned. They also have a stubby 9" CF can but it would be a fair bit louder I would imagine whereas the 14" can might bring the end of tail in line with the end of the exhaust, while not being as loud. Just a thought..........

Here is a link to some of the other style exhaust slip-ons that Delkevic offers as well.

almost anything is possible...we mounted a 7G tail to a 5G....

Do you have any details on this? I just happen to have all (that i can think of) parts to do this. How did it work out?

I seldom visit this forum anymore and so my post is a little on the late side. In any event, I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Bioblade. For those of you that don't recall, it's a 5G VFR with an 8G CBR1k sub-frame / rear cowl. All other fairings are track day plastics for an RC51. Although nothing was a direct bolt-on, it goes to show what can be done with a little ingenuity and elbow grease.

A couple European guys built it a few years ago.

And the guys from the Belgium MC magazine that build it wrote that the seating position was highly uncomfortable.... :goofy:

Biggest problem with that BioBlade:
