I've got a 2004 VFR800F that has some issues with stalling out this year.
I just got it on the road a few weeks ago after being stored for the winter (outside, but tightly cocooned in multiple tarps)
It ran well for 3 commuter trips (all stop and go), then started acting up.
Had a couple of random stalls, I didnt think about it at the time (figure i was being ham-fisted on the controls).
Symptoms
- starts and runs fine when cold
- runs well for about 5 min until warm (~175F)
- stalls when the throttle is chopped at a stop. hard to restart
- occasionally stalls at >3k when running normally. hard to restart immediately. If it sits for a min, it start just fine
Its very intermittent. May run fine for 5 min then act up. When its acting up, the throttle control is not smooth
When it dies, it doesn't sputter and die. Its running, then dead, like there's an electrical problem
the EFI light came on once and flashed. But when I tried to get codes jumpering the 2 pin ECU plug, no codes came up.
~24,000 km
Full service last year: new plugs, filters etc. new battery this year.
The only thing that happened between running and not where:
- new tank of gas and a "not so great" station - but hell I fill my car up there
- horrendous rainstorm that soaked the bike - but that's happened before
So I'd suspected water in the tank - but that should flush out quickly.
Ideas gratefully accepted, so I can get back to riding. (and put my Saab in the shop :mad: )

Check the wiring and connector coming from the r/r on the right above the radiator. Also check the wiring next to the battery.

Check your kill switch. Clean it.
how old is the gas in the tank??? ethanol separates and will make a bike run like crap...

sorry, what's an r/r?
That's your regulator/rectifier mounted on the front right side of the frame. You'll have to remove the right faring to inspect the wiring and connector. The wires are yellow coming from the R/R.

So the consensus seems to be its electrical.
I'll
- clean all contacts - winter corrosion makes a lot of sense
- check battery voltage - No lack of electrical power though when starting, to the lights etc, so I doubt thats the issue, and its new
- check rectifier. presumably this should be putting out nice stable ~13 VDC?
Discounting a few things
- gas is new, fuel was stabilized over the winter (not much of it) tank run til almost empty then refilled
- plugs, new last year. from past issues in my car, the engine would run poorly if the plugs were fried, but not stall intermittently and then run fine again.
Other stuff
- sensors? MAF?
- ECU, I've never fried one before, these VFR's do get really hot.
- was told to check the fuel pump? I'm assuming the ECU has a cold start circuit, which runs rich until it turns off when warm.
Bike runs fine cold.
it stalls when backing off throttle or at steady state, not when rolling on. so dont see why the pump would be the issue.
I've had random stalling on my 02 and it was electrical.

Pay special attention to the red wire next to the battery with a spade connector. That wire is too thin for the job and spade gets too hot, which results in poor connection. I have replaced that wire with a beefier one and soldered that connection.
Electrical is most probable but also look at the idle. When the bike is warm it should idle at about 1300 rpm.
If it is low i'd bump it up.
