Evap Canister Delete Help Needed

Hello all,

I have the fairings off for another fix I'm working on when I noticed that the mount for my evap canister is broken and zip tied on by the previous owner! What?

I thought... what a wonderful opportunity to get rid of it!! I've read many threads but have trouble following text instruction only so I took a picture (will take more as I go). I can probably manage to get the thing off but need to know what tubes* to:

1. block

2. which ones need to be rerouted/maintained in place somehow

3. which ones can be flat out pulled off or removed all together

*I notice these two and know there's another on the far side

Also, do I need to go ahead and pull off the gas tank to mess with anything there to complete the process?? Anything else to do??

The solenoid does not feedback. Do not worry about it. You will need to lift the tank. There are two hoses coming off the front underside of the tank. One is a gas vapor vent and the other one is a rain water drain. You need to remove everything associated with those two hoses and then run two new lines in their place that can drain and vent properly. Remove the entire evaporation canister assembly and plug the line that was coming from the throttle body to it.

VFRpwr, not sure which hose is what!? I know there's two hoses on the right (as if sitting on the bike) and one coming out on the left. What is each called or for so I have frame of reference when discussing?

Candy, questions..

1. When you say don't worry about the solenoid do you mean I can remove the solenoid that the larger hose on the right side of canister (as if sitting on bike) goes to and the associated hoses at the solenoid?

-More detail: There's also the hose going off to the left from the solenoid (also large). What about that one?

2. The small hose coming from the canister on the right side. It disappears above the solenoid. What to do with it?

3. The hose on the left side of the canister. What to do with it?

4. More detail on this sentence please: "Remove the entire evaporation canister assembly and plug the line that was coming from the throttle body to it."

-Does this mean that there will be a hole somewhere after removing the evap canister that the hose from the throttle body can plug into?

5. Is there sufficient hose available (after pulling some off) to utilize to re-route hoses coming off of the tank to drain/vent properly?

-If not what size/length hose and method do you suggest for a re-route?

-Where's a good place for the hoses to come out (safest)?

6. I understand the bracket that holds the canister (on right) may be used to attach the lower fairing to. Mine is broken there but zip tied on (see pic above) should I keep that piece or JB Weld it back on? Suggestions?

Sry Candy. I do tend to make things more complicated then they really are but I swear I don't do it on purpose. There is info on this but a lot is not easy to understand for me. Any help is appreciated. The way I see it there are 5 hoses involved. 2 on right side of canister (The one to the solenoid can be trashed ..I believe.. along with the solenoid), 1 on the left of the canister (what to do with it) and 2 coming off of the gas tank (I know what to do with these). Just trying to make sense of the rest.

The way I see it there are only three holes (lines) involved:

1. The line coming from the throttle bodies

2. The water drain line coming from the front bottom of the gas tank.

3. The gas vapor vent line coming from the front bottom of the tank.

All you need to do is:

1. Remove the evap canister and all lines /components / solenoids etc that are associated with it.

2. Plug off the line / hole coming directly off of the throttle bodies.

3. Run two new lines coming off of the gas tank that allow it to drain and vent in to the open atmosphere properly.

Candy, I took a picture of the solenoid location. As the bike is my only mode of transportation currently I am anticipating having to $buy$ extra hoses before I rip stuff out. They are a little hard to see but I have small red arrows to point these out: Is the hose from the throttle body marked as #2? If so I don't need extra hose there and can just cap it off. Is the hose marked #1 one of the lines that goes to the tank that can be re-routed? If so this looks long enough already to be able to point somewhere else. Thoughts?

Man, you Californian's get a such a lot of cool emission crap that the rest of us don't need to deal with! Even with my 'Rest of World' 5th gen I cringe every time I look at all the hoses. Do yourself a favour and get rid of the PAIR valve system while you are at it.

The hose labelled 5 connects the throttle body atmosphere to the canister, via the solenoid valve, so that must be plugged, either at the end of the hose or back at the 5-way junction under the tank, your call. Otherwise you'll have a vacuum air leak and the bike will run poorly. You should be able to buy bungs or caps (for vacuum hose) at an auto parts store to suit.

Hose 1 is the air vent from the tank; this can be disconnected from the canister and tucked away down low where it won't touch the headers; on models without the evap can this is a bracket on the left of the bike below the water pump. It really doesn't matter where this terminates so long as the hose doesn't get burnt.

Now I don't have a VTEC but I do have the manual, and it does appear that CA model is the only model with an Evap can. The rest of the world doesn't have the can. The good news is that this appears to be the only difference, previous versions like my 5th gen also had different cam timing to reduce emissions to meet CARB requirements.

Update: Evap and all associated hoses are gone.. as a note to self the 2 lines from the gas tank were already run to ground but I did move the small one to the left side of the bike (orientation of R/L is while sitting on the bike) with the rest of the hoses. I capped the side solenoid hose at the old location for the solenoid and taped up the rest of the connector there as well. I also have some photos of the air box where I capped off other stuff. The red indicates a small zip tie where I did the work. Man it looks so much cleaner now. After I re-adjust the idle I'll take it for a spin (as I just did pairs in another thread)!!

Ok. quick update. Nice growl in the front of the bike at airbox upon cracking the throttle. Smoother in the turns at low speed and low speed in general. This was a no brainer mod to do. I just can't wait to put in the rapid race mod and some loud freakin slip-ons.. Oh no.. I'm addicted to my Viffer!

On a side note: My wife poked her head into the garage the other night and noticed the utility light was still on. She asked if I was keeping the light on for the bike to which I replied "She gets lonely". Wow... where'd that come from? I'd never referred to my bike as anything more than a bike before..

Anyone else notice this strange behavior in themselves?
