Most of it assumes that as a literbike rider you spend your entire day, throttle pinned and letting the electronics sort everything out.

I did like number ten, as people that buy gsxr1000's as their first bike are dumb as rocks.

Frankly the VFR has enough get-up-and-go for me and a passenger. I've ridden liter bikes (ZX11, ZX12, ZRX) and the usable power is really not that different from our bike. Sure it accelerates quicker, can get to top speed quicker, but as far as day to day riding there isn't a lot of advantage. Look around the world, most riders in places other than the west ride 125-250 sized bikes - better fuel economy, more practical, cheaper to insure, easier to ride. Extra power is nice but not really necessary unless you're doing track days all the time, IMHO.

#4

I've been saying the GSXR750 is the perfect size for years. The physical size of a 600 so you get the handling, with some extra HP without having to rev it to 16,000 RPM's. Only a 750cc V-4 in a 425 lb chassis would be better.

I probably wouldn't have a license if I owned a 1,000cc. It is way to easy to go fast without realizing just how fast you are going.

#5

Face it: litrebikes and VFRs for that matter aren't about need. I love my bike, and would only replace it with another. An extra 50-100hp would be ridiculous for me, and dangerous for my wallet if not my health.

#6

I need to send this to my grandson, he started out on a GSXR 600 which he had for a grand total of about 4 months. He sold it to buy a Yamaha R1. Stupid. He rides with a bunch of guys here in KC and they spend their time running up and down the interstate. Whoopee, what fun.

#7

I have loved each and every literbike I've owned.  #6's and 7 in the garage currently.  Dumb article.  #7 is bs.  Mount Sport tourer tires on instead, problem solved.  #8, sorry, there are comfortable literbikes.  And you can make them nice and comfy with a set of bars, a new seat, and maybe even rearsets.  My R1 is spacious and I can do 400-500 days with ease.  #9, really?  LMAO.  If anything the modern literbikes handle AS WELL as the 600 and have a bunch more power.  10 and 11 I'm not going to even bother.  Trying to pass personal opinion off as truth is failure.  I do agree about buying one for your first bike, dumb, but I also think buying a supersport 600 for your first bike is dumb too.

#8

It seems I have a fairly similar mindset to a few of you guys; I absolutely don't need more power than my VFR (and actually have had a blast on smaller bikes like an SV650), but to me, a responsible adult's choice in a motorcycle isn't about needs. It's fully a case of satisfying one's wants, one's irrational side that ignores the "poor" business case of choosing repli-racer seating positions, parts, tires, wind protection, etc.

Given a few spare dollars, I'd pick up a 2009+ Yamaha R1, maaaabbbyyee put some higher bars on it, and retrofit my VFR's hard luggage to it.  :wheel:

Off to the local classifieds again...

personally  my fav day on a ride was on a custom slammed rebel 250 with my girl on the back..

i maxxxed it out RACING a hayabusa!!

yes, you read that correctly!

 kelly drive in Philadelphia!

yes, he ripped to god knows how fast in record time.. then there is a sharp right turn.. and slams on the brakes....( to the point they were smoking!!!)

just as i was reaching top speed and glided through the corner.. and stayed on the gas the whole way as this rube was ripping past me and slamming on the brakes at every corner..  and i squeeeeeked past the stoplight just a head of him..

it was surreal, but a damned blast to do!!

and my girl could proudly say her bike was faster than a busa.. even 2 up!!! :laughing6-hehe:

#10

Ironic how he states twice that 600s can pretty much go just as fast as literbikes, yet he singles out only literbikes as being too fast.

However, if I were to get a literbike to keep, it would be a twin, so I could enjoy most* of the power at speed limit-esque speeds.

Or a Blackbird. Have you guys ridden one? Holy speed and torque Batman.

#11

i just dodnt get how he says that liter bikes are more uncomfortable than 600s, but theyre bigger than 600.... huh?

#12

New riders should stick with small bikes at first.

You can wind it WFO and nothing too fast happens.

The bigger faster bikes are for experienced riders.

That have some self restraint with the throttle.

Because they know what happens if they don't. :comp13:

Just ask Enzed. Crash burn die X 2. :goofy:

In Noozilund, noobs are restricted to bikes that are on the list for "LAMS" (Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme):
The scheme allows learner and restricted licence holders to ride motorcycles:
 with a maximum power-to-weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne AND
 an upper engine capacity of 660cc AND
 that are published on the approved list on the NZTA website.

So, you don't get people with no motorcycle experience buying 1000cc sportsbike (unlike when I learned to ride).

I dunno that I'd buy a litre bike, unless it was a V-twin or V4 or whatever, as I no longer do much open-road riding. In fact I haven't done anything other than weekday commuting for a long time.
#14

I have no clue how that would convert to HP per pound,

but the graduated licensing systems are a good thing, imho.

#15

That would be a lbs/hp ratio of about 10.96 for that LAMS bike - a 400lb bike with 36.5hp (virtually my old KLR!)

539lb 109hp 6th Gen is 4.94 lbs/hp whereas a 400lb 200hp litrebike is uhhhhh, wait, just give me a minute......

(note: all technical data taken from the __'ish +/- data table).

#16

The writer of that spiel missed the point completely why people own a litre bike "BECAUSE THEY CAN"

I mean why own a Bugatti Veyron or any other super car for that point, most owners of super cars can't drive for shit there just super rich, but they buy them because they can. I understand the writers point & honestly low skill riders should ride something better to hone there skills but start taking individual choice from humans we then become over policed & robots.

The site formerly known as Hell for Leather (now ride apart) has gone from being relevant and interesting to becoming an abominable melange of poor writing, list-based click bait and ignorant opinion pieces wrapped around manufacturer press releases and other PR drivel.

They are to be shunned.

Having just wasted a few minutes of my life reading the bollocks on that web site, I'd have to agree with this!!!

Very poorly written, misses the point, misses the main negatives of those bikes.

All about horsepower? Bollocks... they're all about going quick around a race track (= acceleration and handling) and most of the bigger-engined sports-tourers make more power and speed.

They don't handle? Bollocks... see above. They out-handle almost anything else in bikedom!! On tarmac, at least :)

You could probably kick my ass on a 1/2 litre bike.

Unlike the GSXR1K dweeb who split today between me, in my Toyota 4x4, and a slow SUV. He had the $500 Spidi jacket and $500 Arai helmet, paired with the $30 jeans and $20 sneakers. He left about 12" when he split and cut in to my lane and roared off. Very unfortunate really, I was expecting a little fender bang, I need a new paint job on the old truck.  :comp13:

Nah. Just means I have 3 times the maintenance, insurance, registration bills.

Too bad I don't get 3 times as much time to ride. :comp13:

That saying, if you love something let it go, is a lot of garbage.

I say, keep it in the garage, and ride it as much as you can.

Yep, and that sig line right there is about the extent of my advertising. Had an ad for 2 weeks after I bought the '07 model.

Didn't get any action, went on vacation. Have not been able to get myself to put up a new ad. It's only been about a year and a half. :laughing6-hehe:

The Diavel is a different looking Duck. Looks a bit porky. But I'm sure it goes. :warranty:

This thread just makes me want to go buy another bike, this time a Pan 1299s.  I miss having the RC in the garage.  Twins are fantastic.  Gonna try and wait for Honda though.  Still a chance they may answer that 2015 R1 with a V4 instead of another inline 4 CBR.

From your mouth to God's ears! I have never really been a big CBR fan.

I sold Lee my beloved 07 Tuono to buy an RC51 track bike. In part because i was getting tickets and pulled over on the Tuono more than any bike i ever owned. Now i realize that was all on me. Complacent speeding and not watching for cops. So the RC is getting street registered soon and i am even contemplating buying an FZ1 a friend has modified to the hilt. True you can seldom use all the performance of a litre bike and 600 sport bike or 400cc sumo might smoke you in the canyons but its all about what you love about a motorcycle that makes them a blast to ride. We have the freedom to choose a lire bike here in the USA where other countries make it difficult to own one. I am with Lee. I'll take 2 liter bikes and my VFR and a dirt bike and a supermoto and an adv tourer then i should be content.

I picture Steve Martin (AKA The Jerk) saying this...

"All i need is my VFR...and this Liter bike and that's all. And this SUMO, and that's all I need...And this adv tourer, The VFR, the liter bike, the SUMO and the adv bike, but that's all"

The perfect number of motorcycles to own is N + 1,

where N = the number of motorcycles you already own.

Sadly, I am far from perfection.

We are gonna see.  I hope so.  I'm either buying that new Ford Focus RS or yet another motorcycle to add to the garage.  With the growing population here, and even more congestion the car seems like a waste (for the first time in my life I'm starting to hate driving) and I'd just like to add another bike to the stable instead.  Speaking of I need to see what another liter or liter+ bike would do to my insurance.  F'in bastages raised my rates again this year yet I have no tickets, no accidents, no nothing on my driving record and I have never made a motorcycle claim in my life.

My mk2 MP350, with KWV3's well sorted.

Hmmm.  I always thought that number was a function of G^2, the area of the garage?  I am currently at that limit...so clearly, I need a bigger garage!

Ciao,

I'm in the same boat! Single "car" garage with 4 vehicles (3 bikes + 1 car) plus tools and god knows what else I've got stored in there! New garage or loose the car...hmm

Space can be a problem. Cars can live outside as far as I'm concerned.

Wish I had my parents setup.

Two car attached garage, and an oversized garage in back maybe 25' x 25'. :491:
