Titanium Sprocket Group Buy?

So a while back a young man posted on SBN that he was making titanium sprockets, and was wondering if any of us wanted one.

Apparently the life on the things is wicked. But they're expensive, at nearly 300 bucks for a rear one.

I contacted him about potentially doing a group buy for 5th gen VFRs, and he said that with 3 people willing to buy, the price would come down around 200. This is obviously a low volume business for him, where the most expensive bit on his end is the designing and making of the first example.

I'd be interested in one come spring (say. . . mid april?). Would anyone else put their name on? I'll make a list in this post a we go.
I'll also ask if he can make front sprockets as well, since I'd prefer both to match.

How many teeth on the rear sprocket?  Do all purchasers need to agree to the same tooth count?  Available in 520 size?

Anyone familiar with anybody that has tried a titanium sprocket? I know they sound great, but how does that translate to actual real world usage?

If this has anything at all to do with sidewinder sprockets, which this sounds like, I would stay the hell away.

I purchased "titanium moly" sprockets from sidewinder sprockets and they were absolute garbage. They were supposedly lifetime rated and I blew through 3 with in 14,000 miles.

Yup I just looked at the site and this has sidewinder/kraus written all over it. Its a scam. They are no lighter than standard sprockets and last no where near as long. Mark my words, if you buy from there, you will be extremely disappointed.
Go ahead an order them, but I'd put money on them wearing out in less than 10,000 miles.
I'm looking at their website and its blatantly obvious that this is the same company that just goes through a name change and new website every few years to avoid their terrible reputation an better business rating of an F.

Haha and sidewinder sprockets completely changed their site too. This is priceless lol. Ugh I feel bad for all the people that are going to get scamed.
I have been trying to get sidewinder to honor their lifetime warranty for months and all I could get them to do was send me another rear. Then when I kept demanding a new front, they informed me that the person I had been communicating with was no longer with them and the guy I was talking to was sorry and overwhelmed but trying to get me a new front.

SideWinder advertises "Ti-Moly" sprockets.

The Ryan guy says his are machined from "6AL-4V AEROSPACE GRADE TITANIUM"


Doesn't sound like the same thing.

As to whether or not this is a suitable material for sprockets, I don't know, as I'm not a metallurgist.

It is literally the same exact web page layout and structure as the previous sidewinder sprockets page. They change their whole get up every year or so, but its still really obvious to anyone that's actually dealt with them.

I don't know what the last Sidewinder Sprockets website looked like, but here's what it was like when I bought my Ti-Moly rear sprocket back in 2008-9.  I was mainly interested in finding someone who could make me a custom 530-pitch sprocket for my big-bore FP, which i was planning on fitting with an RC30 swing arm (still not done, lol), but decided that I first needed a top-of-the-lne rear sprocket for my A&A Y2k.  It took a lot longer than I had been promised, but I eventually got the sprocket I ordered:

That sprocket is now fitted on my RC46, and as far as I can tell, it works fine.  It was definitely lighter than the JT-type sprocket that was on the bike, and the teeth are not beveled on the sides.

Yes, the site was full of hype, and I understand that Sidewinder Sprockets is now owned by someone else, but if you need a custom sprocket made there are, unfortunately, few other options...

I'm running chaingang chain and sprockets and they are excellent. Minimal adjustment required over the 15,000 kms I've had it fitted and no issues at all.

Glad to hear that!

I suppose it's always worth checking again, because back in January 2009 Chris Haggarty at Chain Gang told me that they were shutting down!  That was why I went with the snake oil guy...  I see that the new GM of Chain Gang is Scott Crawshaw, and the business address and phone numbers are different, so perhaps the entire business was rescued in an employee buyout or something?
