Appearently it is that time again... Original owner 82,000 mile 97 VFR with a water pump leaking again. This is the 4th water pump failure that I have experienced, original pump went at 65000, new OEM replacement went at 75000, new OEM replacement went at 79,000, used pump has gone again with 82,000. These failures have happened from 2008 - fall of 2014.
Regular coolant flushes with the proper coolant. Bike has been stored in a climate controlled garage since 2002.
Starting to think something must be making the seals in the water pump fail, sadly I threw out the first 2 failed pumps. Was looking at my service manual at the oil pump since it's shaft drives the water pump but don't see anything obvious there that wouldn't most likely effect oil pressure and I don't think I have had oiling issues.
I have one more supposedly good used water pump but plan on checking the oil pump over per the service manual to make sure it isn't killing the water pump seals.
I also plan on attempting to rebuild the non-rebuildable water pumps I have left. I read on another site 2 counts of people claiming to have successfully rebuilt them but no details were given. I will followup with how I make out in this regard, I guess if all else fails I can go electric.
All that said at least on the forums water pump failures seem to be pretty rare so does anyone have any suggestions on what might be happening other than rotten luck assuming I don't find a problem with the oil pump?
This appears to be a profound mystery. So I guess I start with stupid questions. Were you using a premixed coolant, or did you mix with water? If water, was it distilled? I'm looking for some sort of ionic activity in the pump. I have 6th gen, so I don't know if the water pump set up is similar, but is there anyway the pumps could be affected by uneven torque?
I'm assuming that the failure is in the seal under the impeller that protects the water pump bearing. Is there an oil passage to this bearing, or is the bearing permanently lubricated? I'm expecting that the pump bearings are lubricated permanently on original assembly. It occurs to me that they could dry out on the shelf so that new pumps are no better than your failed pump. If that is the case, then working with some one that could put a new bearing and seal on one of your existing failed pumps might be the right ticket.
1)Coolant, I have used premix motorcycle specific coolant the last 2 times. Prior to that I had always used coolant mixed with distilled water.
-I had thought something similar after the 2nd failure but have never seen any signs of corrosion in the system
2)That has been the failure point each time resulting in leaking coolant out the weep hole.
3)There is no oil passage in the pump. I have always thought the coolant lubed the seals but it is possible they are lubed and sealed on assembly. I thought the same things about the OEM pump replacements sitting around and drying out.
4)I don't know of anyone rebuilding these pumps, I am fairly handy from a mechanical stand point and have access to a wide range of tools so I am planning on attempting to rebuild the pumps myself.
