How To Drain Float Bowls?

Hi all

Apologies if this is a super easy to answer question!

Due to a shoulder issue I have I've not ridden in a week and doubt I'll ride this week coming up, I'm then off to Japan for two weeks.  So it'll be a total of four weeks without riding - I'm worried the fuel will go bad and/or clog the carbs...

  • How do I drain the float bowls?  If someone could put a photo of the drain screws, I'd be grateful.
  • Reckon I should leave the fuel in the tank or drain that as well?

Thanks in avance :)

Don't have a photo but there is a brass screw on the bottom each float bowl, flathead screw.

You might wish to cut apart a small plastic pop bottle lengthwise to shove inbetween the cylinders to catch the fuel that escapes.

It will be fine to leave it, if you are overly concerned then add a splash of fuel stabiliser to the tank and run the bike for 5 mins to get the stabilised fuel through into the carbs. You should be able to leave it for months on end then. Its probably the battery that could be the biggest problem but again. will be fine for a couple of weeks.

I personally would not bother with drain screws, just pull the wires from the fuel pump and run the bike until the carbs empty and it stops!

4 weeks will not make the fuel go bad.
I'd start getting concerned after 6 month.

The screwdriver will need to be long enough to reach the right side bowls, which have drain bolts pointed inward.

Thanks guys, think I'll just leave it as is in that case - i read somewhere that modern fuel separates out around two weeks.  I took it out for a good hard spin today and it felt fantastic...pulled right through to 130mph on a private road with no issues whatsoever, love it!
