1St Valve Check After 90,000 Km/18 Years On 4Th Gen

Gave my redslut in the hands of a friendly mechanic to do some work on her.

The carbs were going to be taken off and cleaned (also for the 1st time since new), so checking the valves would be logical..........

and the scores are

Rear cylinders....

One intake out of range so all were set to 16...

Amazing, does it feel any different since having those few adjusted?  I'm contemplating doing mine but I only have 24000 miles on the clock!!

Interesting that you had a couple that were loose. I had to adjust 5 (?) at the 150K km mark. I did checks every 25K until 100K. All were in spec but trending tighter. I figure I won't have to do another valve check again.

Trending tighter is what you expect due to the design of the shims setup

One of the reasons valve's get loose is build up of coal deposits on the valve. Mostly steen on bikes owned by slow drivers

Ugh, Dutchy you need to either ceramic coat those headers or get some stainless steel ones. Redslut deserves no less!

So ride slow for a while to loosen them, and then ride fast to tighten them. Self-adjusting valves!


Ugh, Dutchy you need to either ceramic coat those headers or get some stainless steel ones. Redslut deserves no less!

Sadly, mine look like that too.

I just did mine at 28000km.

3 of 4 of the front cylinder intakes were too tight, around 0.10 to 0.11 mm.

Pulled the cam today and adjusted the shims.

now adjusted to close to 0.16mm.

All other valves were fine, the exhausts were all 0.26-0.28mm.

Dutchy, I think your in is out on the first table.

I know the mechanic Dutchy went to, he's a perfectionist, who does nog make that kind of error.

That's a thought, but doesn't it hold the moisture in and rust the pipes too? At least that's what I've read. What's your experience been?
