Helmet Mount For Sony Action Cam?

What are your thoughts on mounting a SONY action cam to my helmet?

Whilst I admire your endeavour, there are a few things I'd be concerned about (depending upon how you intend to use it);

1.  Differential weight on one side causing neck strain.

2.  Differential drag when at speed causing rotational neck strain.

3.  If you come off the bike, that camera may well hit the ground and as it is not smooth like the helmet, it will likely impart a rapid rotational force on your helmet and therefore your neck, possibly injuring your neck or worse.

There are some really small cameras on the market that would be far more suitable for helmet use.

You have a good point. I was all set to buy a ReplayXD Mini, but got the AS100V and Liveview remote for $100. Just couldn't pass up that deal. Which camera would you suggest for helmet mount?

A helmet camera has never been something I've really wanted (too much chance to catch me doing something not necessarily totally legal) so I don't know any specific ones but I know I have seen plenty of smaller & slimmer ones that would be better imo. I've even worked with, albeit a few years ago now, a camera where the lens was separated from the battery & recording setup by a long fibre-optic cable. The lens was tiny and it meant the bulky part of the camera itself could be mounted somewhere more safe.

Although not a camera (though they are now selling one with an integrated HD camera), I do wear a helmet-mounted Sena Bluetooth system and I share the same major concerns over that.

I've had my Contour on a sticky side mount for about a year now with zero issues. And the Contour lens rotates to fix the angle. Not a sales pitch, just saying. :-)

Skids, I think you might be talking about the POV.1. That is the only 'established' one that I know of like that. Panasonic also has their HX-A100/500 line, but their camera lens is pretty big.

I love your install work but worried about your safety. I was going to do a helmet mount for my TV Pilot but I just don't feel a helmet mounted camera is safe enough. As Skids said in #3 of his response if you do fall, the camera could act a as lever and cause rapid rotational force.

I have a Contour on a sticky mount on top of my helmet.  I've used it at the local indoor go-cart track, but have not tried it on the bike yet.  Good video, light weight, I'm not even aware that it is there.

All points taken to heart (especially the Shumacher story). I think I will use the SENA mount as a spare for my communicator on another helmet and try to find different location to mount the camera. Using the helmet mount does introduce a  risk as noted and it really isn't a risk worth taking. Thanks again for the input.

Conedodger said it best... You don't even know it's there.   Another plus for the sticky mount on a light cam, is that if you DO crash and somehow hang the cam on something.. It'll come off (in a good way).
