Hi everyone, I'm looking to trade my four wheeler for a 1995 vfr 750. I'm wondering if there is anything on these bikes that I should look out for. The guy selling it said it has 50000 miles on it and that it runs good and rides solid but who isn't going to say that when selling something.. He is asking $1800 for it which is about what I consider my four wheeler to be worth.
Looking for advice on what to for some advice on what to look for and what it's really worth.
Here's the ad for pictures

Thanks in advance for any help any one can give me

It doesn't look too bad with out the mids & Lowers ( I have run mine that way before while I was getting parts) If you are looking for a street bike it would be worth 1800.  Body parts can be found, I have a storage unit full of parts in fair condition. My '94 has 112+k on her now and runs great. The 4th gen VFR will run forever with minimal maint. just change the oil, tires, chains...etc.

If you're not wanting to spend more than the ATV is worth, that's probably about the condition you'll find (missing or trashed plastics).  It wouldn't surprise me to see a 4th gen go 200,000 miles, so that wouldn't worry me.   If you look around you could probably find one with nice plastics that's maybe in the $2,500 to $3,000 range if that fits your budget.   For perspective, there was one sold near me this spring that had about 4,000 miles on it - I think he was asking something around $4,000.

"sounds badass"

but it has what looks like the OEM muffler; and that is one demure pipe....

so what led him to do a strip and respray (rattlecan?); usually it means a crash preceeded this "upgrade".....

the bar weights are non-oem (they are black)

Look for crash damage, like the foot brake lever having left an imprint in the lower frame spar.

Any "arty-farty" picture in an add makes me suspicious....

Are the rims stripped/polished? that is high maintenance.

Standard they are black so unless they are properly spray painted or powdercoated...

the rear mudguard has been cut-off.  Do you live in California? (Where it never rains no?)

Seat is not OEM; a Corbin or Sergant?

Headlights should have regular H4 bulbs, unless you like blinding oncoming traffic at night..

New rear tire........... what is the DOT code (week+year of mfg)  Same brand/type as on the front?  What about the front is that a "Kojak"?

I don't see 1800.00.

This thing was crashed.

The stain black paint looks like truck bed liner.

I would personally stay away.

2500.00 will get you a nice one with original plastics.

Lol yeah I don't live in Cali I live in ne maryland and it snows and rains here. there are a few other ones on craigslist and there's a I think 02 vfr 800 for 2200 that I might look at. I just don't want to get screwed with a torn up bike like I did when I bought my four wheeler. I've spent way to much time and to much money getting it to be reliable and riding good.

I bet you could count, globally, the VFR750's that HAVEN'T been dropped on less that two hands.  They're all as old as the wind now, you'll pay a lot of money for a very tidy example and next to nothing for a rough'un like that.

Anyway, things to look out for (as this seems to have been missed in replies so far):

  • Rotton downpipes and collector - mild steel as standard so they disintegrate over time
  • Reg/Recs that cook themselves and the battery - it's under the seat plastics on the right.  Get a voltmeter and check the charge to the battery terminals at idle and 3000rpm.  I've forgotten the ideal figures but someone will come along (Dutchy mate, you must know).  Also, check the wire on the right side of the engine - the connector blocks will melt or get full of shit which causes this issue.  If the reg/rec has been replaced, it may have fins on it - standard factory ones don't
  • Rear hub can and will seize up over time, making chain adjustment an absolute nightmare, strip-regrease-rebuild.  The swing arm also fills up with dirt due to a conveniently placed hole that Honda seemingly forgot to plug up, towards the front of the swing arm
  • front brakes are, unless in absolute mint condition, complete pants.  The bike weighs just short of a cathedral so you wanna make sure those pistons and sliders are moving freely and the fluid is clean.
  • I've owned 3 750's so far and every one of them has had the dirtiest rear brake fluid known to man kind, which makes the rear brake seize.  Refresh as normal and it usually sorts it.  The caliper itself doesn't take too much of a beating
  • Carbs are often dirty as you like to imagine, main jets may be fine but the bike may have sticky choke cable and/or other parts that stop it from starting nicely (twist of the throttle usually burps them into life)
  • front forks and rear shock are usually sponge at this age, fork oil in the front and a CBR shock for the rear (a lad called Jamie Daugherty...I think....can help you with this if it's important to you)

Otherwise, check the usual....steering for notches, oil leaks around the engine covers etc etc.

Rock solid engine but the rest of the bike is JUST as susceptible to issues as any other you care to mention.

Thanks for the info everyone. I mean I'm not to worried about the plastics being best up as long as there not extremely road rashed or anything along those lines.
Also the reason I'm not to worried about the plastics is I've never owned an actual motorcycle but I've been ridding dirtbike a and four wheelers for the last 10 years and have ridden a few ninja 600s and a gsxr 600

This one looks like a better deal.  Not that far from you and being sold by a forum member. :fing02:

The mid-fairings and lower fairing are more than badly rashed, they're missing. Which suggests they were destroyed, unless he was just going for the naked look, and still has them. Flat black paint is a quick and cheap way to hide crash damage, you PROBABLY wouldn't do that to an otherwise good bike as it really hurts the value compared to factory stock.

I'm in DC there will be a better condition one that pops up. Search in PA CL too

Yeah I look in Baltimore, philly, delawear, York, and south jersey I'm fairly close to all of them about half way between philly and baltimore. I know I saw probably 2 800s that are around 2 grand for sale around me but I think if rather have the gear driven cams lol

1998 - 2001 800s have geared cams. Mine is 1998. Picked up in PA 2yrs ago. That 750 in PA for 2k is a good deal.

If you are looking for gear-driven cams, 2000 & 2001 VFR800fi are the state-of-the-art for Honda street bikes. Fuel injection is the way to go IMHO. Some really like the catless '98 & '99.

I mean I'm not dead set on gear driven cams but I do really like the sound they make lol. And if I can I would love to get fuel injected, I hate dealing with the carb on my four wheeler and I can't imagine how have multiple carbs is going to be and syncing them lol but I'll figure it out if I have to.
But yeah if he's asking 1800 Obo ill make a cash offer at 1500 and hope for the best. Now all I need to do is find time to be able to call and getup there.
#16

Syncing them on a 94-97 is considerably easier than on the 90-93 as the carbs are small and more efficient.  The carbs are usually extremely reliable, at worst needing the jets cleaned through which isn't quite as pig of a job as people crack it out to be.

My 1st carb sync was at 60000km...
#18

Where they much out Dutchy?  Exhaust is on by the way...pics to follow on Monday!

The mc dealer told me that they adjusted them somewhat, but had they done nothing, it would have been ok still.

Th bike was in for new head barings anyway so I told them to check.

With the VF now in the house, I bought a CarbTune and an angled screwdriver.

Ah yes pictures!! good good good!!!!

It's incredibly loud, only heard it over the phone so far haha - they had it on the dyno (dynojet kit was installed as well) and he blipped it at idle, sounded ridiculous.  I'm picking it up today.
