Pretty sure the valves had not been been checked for a long time (the PO said he never did, nor did who owned it before him) so I met up with "The Dutchy", for that man knows VF....

He has been to the Tail of The Dragon too and been into bikes a loooong time. so we had plenty to talk about while the engine cooled down after we drained the coolant.

His garage is a treasure trove of parts, more parts and more parts.

His pristine VF1000R gave me wood.... (no pictures, we are a family-friendly site). Next to that a pristine VF1000F2, a VF750 and a Magna (pristine too but not my cup off tea; glad to hear he was selling it :goofy: )

Right, lets open her up and stick a few probes here and there!!!

and The Dutchy being the expert guru he is, he has the right tool for adjusting clearances....

:goofy:

Nah.... he has the right (home-made) kit alright

One was a bit tight, the rest all in spec. :cheerleader:

Synched the carbs for good measure and my little puma is ready to pounch (she's <40 years so not a cougar yet......)

Tried making some pictures of the cam lobes; all of which were deemed in good nick

 The Dutchy, now give us a picture of your VF1000R with the new yellow headlight!

You brought it to the right guy. Raymond knows his VFs. Did you see his Suzuki race bike?

#4

nope, but did see the Merlin V12 piston.....   :goofy:

I asked him about the oil mod he has done on larger displacement VFs, but he sees no urgent need on the 500. Regular clearance check? yes!

He showed me the machined part that fits before the oil filter and routes clean oil straight to the heads. It does look purdy!

With the engine getting the green light, a new rear shock is next.

With the Euro on par with the US$, I can buy a Hyperpro for less what a Jamie D unit (incl shipping and customs) will cost.....

Yesterday evening my wife came dowstairs, all geared up and said

"Let's GO big boy!!!"

You're a lucky man Dutchy!

When I grow up I wanna be just like Dutchy! Good fortune, R3~

I wounder how critical the valve tolerance are, as I had my covers off, I did have one valve a bit lose compare to the other, but still a 0,20 tool would not go in so I just left it as it was.

So oil mod not a must for the 500.....hmmmm

sounds safe in a way.

Nice write-up a as usually whit good pics Dutchy :fing02:

(the Redslut looks a bit sad under the cover thro....)

This one Kel ? [image: post-23909-0-73984900-1437337383.jpg]

I Always keep it strictly V4 related if VF® members come over...

Anyway.. It was a very nice day for wrenching, and a very nice day to meet Dutchy and I think our paths will cross again in the future.. I don't have to guess we share the same enthusiasm on motorcycles, we both do..

On the yellow bulb conversion... My 1000R has a dual headlight.. It's the euro version... So I need two of them.... :pinocchio:

On the other hand.. A white buln on the left and a yellow on the right and it for sure looks like an old scooled endurance racer... Hmm.. Lets give that thought a day or two..

Dutchy, I forgot to ask, did the "pumas" bitch seat get a thumb up or thumb down?

#15

BIG thumbs up!

She likes the more muted exhaust note over the Akrapovic and the less "agressive" accelleration (although that is more my right wrist methink...)
Also -but we only went for a short spin- the narrower rear seat was a plus.
downer is the shot rear suspension, making a a sometimes bumpy ride.
So contemplating fitting a Hagon , YSS or finally a Hyperpro....

Any sign of jealousy amongst the girls? One isn't knocking the sidestand out from under the other? Perhaps arching a headlight brow?

#17

That is a lovely picture right there. Next time I'm in the neighbourhood I'll have to go check them out. And say hi to your lovely wife.

Cheers man!!

I guess you can take the rear pegs of the redslut again....

Great job setting the valve lash! Often overlooked & very important!
