2000 Vfr 800 Petrol Pump

Hi guys iv had a few problems with my bike trying to start it so today I pulled the petrol pump and this is what I found ...im clueless at this point

As long as there was enough gas in the tank and the pump was turning on, then that broken piece should have little effect on being able to start the bike. The screen and bag serve two purposes, a coarse filter to prevent the pump from ingesting large particles and to ensure that the pump intake is still submerged when there is little fuel in the tank. The little black hose that is broken is the fuel return hose and it sprays directly into the intake box of the fuel pump. This serves to combat fuel sloshing leading to pump starvation.

What other troubleshooting was performed to determine that lack of fuel was the culprit for the no-start situation? Was the pump not turning on?

The "swarf" is some kind of pre filter material. I have the same stuff in my Blackbird tank. I also thought WTF is that. Its normal so dont worry about, as for the rest i leave to more informed people than me.

Did it break when you were wrestling it out of the tank, or was it already broken? As I recall, they're not easy to remove...
