Tenere...where To Go

Ok some might recall I did buy a Yamaha XT600Z Tenere some years back

Was not the best buy I have done, eventually stripped down and become a garage thropy as a bare frame. Now I finally got inspiration and money to go on, and decided to finally change the tires I did buy 2 years back, I got a found out a not so nice thing...

Bummer, rim cancer!

So quit depressing.

I´m now thinking of to options.

1, buy a other 1990 3AJ Tenere and build them to one and have a bunch of spares, have one for 1200€ in the target close to where I live, its registred 1996 even a 1990 model, this:

2. to sell the Tenere in parts, and buy a other Durlsport. I target I have this, a 1992 660 Tenere also quit close whit a asking price of 1900€, this

So a dilemma again......your toughts are welcome, even I know I have to decide :smile2:

Rim cancer is from someone using "Fix-A-Flat". Looks good and has alot  of travel.

Can't find replacement rims?

My thoughts exactly. Wouldn't it be possible to find a good set of cheap rims and away you go??

Get the rims blasted/ground/sanded, and then powder coated?

Well boys, I hear you loud and clear, but its not just the rims that is the problem. The bike did run ok (did smoke some oil as cold) as I did buy it, and was cosmetically ok for a old dual sport, but...seem every part I touch there come more to fix. I have not split the engine yet, but I know the tube going from the oli tank (its a dry sump engine) to engine had a leak, so its a chance dirt has gone in as well. Now the other problem is time, I have limited time to work on bikes these days. Familly take a lot of time, more than a normal family as the kids have spechal needs (adopted) and wife suffer (recovering good) from a depression....and I really would like to ride a dual sport, not just tarmac, even I like my 3rd gen.

That same model Tenere is very tempting as its history is good, the seller got it from a estate. the bad thing is its paited flat black (eve some here might like it...) so my main idea is to but thet Tenere, change all the cosmetic parts from the Tenere I did first buy and ride it. And By time open the other engine, rebuild it (might even tune it some, over bore ...) and build a second bike togheter at some time. 

So Dutchy, the spare head will not go waist!

In that case, buy the nicest one you can afford, and go ride.

You can always make more money. You can't make up lost time with family.

Given the context now, as Seb said, get the best functional model you can find, ride it and just enjoy it. Life is too short to spend time on mechanical things when you have other priorities. Good luck and ride on!!!

Ok boys, its in my garagae, that flat black 600 Tenere. The rubber coating is partly falling off and under is a strange gray color. Pics later (edit a pic from it in garage)

And yes, money can be made more but not time. And in my case more money was made by selling my 1984 Suzuki RG250W Gamma, since I have not dear to ride it since the deer hit, so I see no since its just a trophy in my garage.

Had a few hours to spare yesterday, was curious what was under that flat black rubber coating....

So what came up as I rubbed it off

In some way nice but will but tank, panels as fenders from my other bike on, so now its striped down, hopfully time to work on it soon again....and then hope for a early spring...saying that, we got more snow!

Well you hit the problem with ALL old spoked wheels. Find a new set or buy new rims. Depending on the depth of the corrosion, they could be fine. The Yamahas never had the best build quality, so an old one will have issues.

The Honda Africa Twin tubeless spoked rims were a better idea, as no water ingress through the spoke holes ! Not sure if anyone makes after market rims like that, but get some if you can.

Use the other Tenere to teach the boys motorcycle mechanics. Then in a few years they can act as your support team for when you enter the Africa Race :biggrin:
