what happened to the recall thread ??....anyway, i went to Motorcycle Mall in NJ today with my recall notice and they ordered my parts...he said they have two others already on order.....word is today 1/20/16, is the the early end of the expected release date range....so anytime soon....they have all my info and i'm waiting for a call from them in a week or two or so.....they offered free pick up and delivery to my house....i like that !!!

#4

yeah, that one.....it was pinned....oh well

#5

Thread moved to an administrative forum, brilliant! lolz

#6

Moved to the homepage guys, so more people can see it.

#7
I haven't been on the homepage in years...

Perfect, thanks Chief

#9

there's a home page ???

#10

there's a home page ???

Indeed. Not a page I usually use.

I just go straight to the "View New Content" button.

In fact I was considering asking for a 2nd button at the bottom of the page to save scrolling all the way back up to the top when I'm done reading a thread.

#11

yeah, i have the 7th Gen page bookmarked, takes me straight here...i never see the home page....i go to the first Gen page once in a while to keep up on my Interceptor

#12

I use the home page as my jump off point now. For awhile I was going straight to Seventh Gen section as well but there are all sorts of other interesting VFR related discussions going on I felt like I was not taking full advantage of the site. Recall on VFR 1200 front and center on the first page works for me.

#13

Anyway, we've got this new thread that stays in the 7th gen so it would probably be good for people to post their repair experiences here.  Anyone else can find the details of the recall in that other thread.  I expect someone will be taking their bike in any day now.

#14

Could just press the home button on your keyboard.
#15
I still haven't taken delivery of my 1200 yet, I got bored of reading updates about this from the States etc and put a call in to Honda Chiswick. Sure enough they found my VIN is due the recall, parts are now on order and should be done beginning of February.

Apparently the process is to inspect the driveshaft, the service manager is getting granular detail from Honda themselves as I can imagine they won't replace unless it's showing signs of damage/wear.

I'll keep you updated as they're calling me back on Monday.
#16

OP, could you edit the thread title to include "shaft drive" so that its easier for people to search for this specific recall info in the future?

#17

Went down to the dealer last Saturday and ordered the part, they called today and said it was in so I'm going to drop the bike off tomorrow and have them repair it durning the week. I think I got lucky, only 5 day wait for the part. I'm going to try and take a picture of the kit for you guys if the service department lets me. I also posted this on the home page.

#18

I'm picking my new to me VFR1200 today and the recall has not been done yet either. Guess I'll call the shop and get it set up. I believe all of the units are being recalled correct?

I thought there was a stop sale for any units not sold.

Here are a few pictures of the new shaft that will be installed next week, I took these at the dealership today. I can't compare old vs new so I don't know the differences.

Thanks for posting those pics.
#25

Mine's at the dealer for the repair now!

#26

The shafts (new and old) are identical, I think that only the bearing seals are different.

Are you sure that the shaft in the photo is the new one and not only a temporary replacement as suggested in the recall?

I'll call tomorrow and check just to be sure.

#28

Mine's booked in at a dealer in London for 20th Feb (can't get it to them any sooner) so will report back then.  They do an inspection first and foremost then do the repair if required.

From what I've read they replace the parts no matter what the inspection reveals and that an inspection was available if you were in doubt whether you could continue to keep riding while waiting for parts to arrive. That was my interpretation anyway.
#30

I just saw on the news that one of the mechanics at the dealer where I was going to take my bike for service, murdered another mechanic. I think I will book it somewhere else, as there is no way I could be 100% focused on my tasks if something like that happened where I worked. At least not for awhile............

#31

Why oh why be concerned about the corrosion, its only surface rust, the problem with the shaft is the UJ, nothing else. Blimey if you think that's rusty, you should have a look underneath a British car, if you think that props bad.

not really concerned but i was surprised.

and i didn't really do much riding after taking it back home (mostly highway and no low speed maneuvers needed) i'll be riding it tomorrow and i'll report if i notice any difference. i did see my rear brake pads are running low, at 18K miles i guess it's expected

#32
I went to the honda dealer thinking I would have to wait a couple weeks for the recall part to come in only to find out that they have it in stock. The guy said that I'm the first vfr 1200 he seen in 2 years, he also said it would take 2 hours to complete

My 2012 went in on Saturday for the shaft drive recall/update.  The dealer advised that Honda is short of supply on the kits and will reallocate one designated for your bike if you do not act promptly in completing the repair once notified by the dealer the kit is available.

I just don't want there to be corrosion. Starts to make weaker points in the shaft, more prone to cracking

Yeah...surface corrosion so roughly -0.005 mm tops...this has to have a negative effect of your power and handling...-50HP rouglhy...uhmm.... :fing02:

Photo of the new one?

At page 3 post #24 there is nothing. New part number where?
On post #23 there is the photo of a shaft identical to the old one.
In Europe Honda is stating that the new shaft is still not produced and they are installing the old one on bikes that have problems.

Yep, on German forum the reckon they already had a new version installed...but in other countries in EU Honda said - no new model before March.
The guy from page 3 had the OLD one installed - he cant have a new one as it was not even manufactured yet...as he posted that a month ago.
Not possible, sorry...
I said nothing about power loss. I'm saying fracturing of the shaft under pressure. I've seen a lot less do a lot of damage in my field of work, so let's not argue this. All I'm talking about is preventing this. I don't care how infinitesimal the pitting is, I want it corrected and prevented.

Mine was completed Monday.  Does seem smoother and quieter.  No hassle at all.  Also got new tires while it was in.  I did have to bug the dealer to get the parts though, seems Honda is in short supply.  So if it is taking awhile to get your parts, bug the dealer.  Mine came in a couple days once they bugged Honda for the parts.

#36

My dealer called me to get my VIN as Honda is in short supply (he says) of the parts and is requiring a VIN to release the part.  He also mentioned it was a $1k dollar part.  I looked up the old part and found a price of $715 at Service Honda which is usually a fair bit below MSRP on parts.  So, this part probably retails north of $800.  Makes me even more convinced that this is a solid move from Honda to supply this part to us for free with such a limited amount of reported issues.

#37

i didn't have to bug anyone, i went to the dealer, he took info off of my recall notice and said they would call when the part arrived.....it took about 2 weeks....they scheduled a pick up and dropped the bike off when it was done....no issues....the whole thing was handled very well by Honda and the dealer

#38

#39
Had the recall repair done and have ridden for several days now. Gotta say, it made a noticeable improvement in reducing driveline lash on my bike. At low speed there isn't any slop between throttle on/off as before. Funny, because the mechanic and I looked over the old drive shaft and couldn't feel or see anything loose, rusted or worn. He said he couldn't visually see any difference between the two shafts either. The minor bit of lash never bothered me before, but now it is nicely solid.

I'm a bit confused, Chiswick Honda said it'd probably be a few months before they had the re-engineered part in stock.  So they're giving me an original replacement in the interim.

Any idea why this is?

Honda UK is getting parts later than American Honda.
#42

The dealer called to tell me the parts arrived this week just in time for hopefully an early spring.

#43

we still have nothing here in Canada as far as I've  heard

LOL, what does that say about our legal system?  Honda much more concerned about US based lawsuits than UK ones?

Or maybe there's less bikes to deal with in the US than in the UK?  I'm guessing getting everyone sorted in a region as quickly as possible is somewhat important.

#46

John, I think they're getting every 1200 in and fitting standard replacement parts until the new parts are in stock. That way, you've effectively got a new rear drive which should reduce any risk until the new parts are available. If they had waited until the replacement parts came into stock and someone meantime had had an accident, they could have been liable.

Just a thought.

#47

No, I get that.  My point is that they aren't treating one market over the other due to particular legal systems (as suggested above, even if it was in jest).  We're a blame claim culture as well now, don't forget!  I think they're targeting smaller customer bases first then hitting bigger customer bases when they have more stock.  I know I'd be a bit miffed if someone in Manchester got a proper replacement part but I had to wait 3 months for example.

I suspect you are correct. I would imagine Honda Japan have given some broad & some detailed direction and it's up to individual national Honda subsidiaries to organise it, within Honda Japans' bounds, as they please.

#49

I got the new drive shaft today! My dealer in the Netherlands (Goedhart, big Honda dealer) just got a delivery of new drive shafts for the 1200's. It only took them 45 minutes to change the drive shafts. Ready for the summer!

Just picked mine up today also, recall complete. Took about 3 weeks to get the shaft assy kit, pn 06400-MGE-306.

I had mine done yesterday. I never looked under the bike but can now see where water may enter into the driveshaft. The driveshaft cover has small gaps between the swingarm and the cover itself. Maybe I will use duct tape around this area to prevent water from entering this area.

Are those gaps for water to drain?  Water is very sneaky and will find a way in if you ride while it is raining.

Perhaps you underestimate the sneakiness.

#55

ConerCarver, you have a good point about water drainage. No matter how waterproof MC clothes are, in heavy rainfall it always finds the weakest point and at times get wet. Weak points examples neck, sleeves, jacket not long enough etc.

I will put aluminum tape on the top half or 3/4, and leave it off the bottom for water to drain..............if it has gaps at the bottom.............

Just had my propeller shaft recall done. We compared parts and there was a difference in the weight and seemed to be a slight design change. Should have taken photos but forgot... Nothing looked out of ordinary on old propeller shaft, but the grease was all but gone at the front U joint. Bike "feels" much tighter, but that is a subjective thought as I can't truly remember what it "felt" like new.

Great news... do you have a YouTube channel or are you going to upload to here.?  i have the YouTube channel Flaming T (same symbol) where i post my vids.

#61

Hey,

So I was a dopey pillock and forgot to take the memory card out of my laptop (I was looking through some footage).  But anyway, it doesn't matter as the only difference it's made is the horrible clunking/grinding sound that was there previously is gone.  I didn't ask to see the old shaft but the assistant advised me it was obliterated and the only one they'd seen in that state.  My bike is incredibly smooth so the drive has no difference, it's just the noise is now completely gone.

I took the time to change the brake fluids today as well as the rear brake was a dark piss colour, gross.  I noticed that when I changed the fluid up front, the dragging sound disappeared from the brakes when rolling the bike around.  I went out for a ride through the city and when I got back, the dragging sound had returned.  Very odd.  It brakes nicely though so I'm not complaining.

Fuel economy is officially absolute shit on these bikes.  TBH it's not a surprise as it's a big heavy lump with big power.  I got a smidge over 60 miles to a full tank.  Pretty much every last drop of that was commuting traffic, but I would have expected at least 100 miles to the tank in traffic.  Anyone else encountered this?

#62

i get nearly 200 miles to a tankful....around 38 MPG

#63

This should be a different thread so as to not side track this one but, something is wrong with your motorcycle if you are only getting 60 miles on one tank.  That's like 15 mpg.

I've got over 100 fill ups on my VFR and nearly all of those are over 200 miles on a tank. I am averaging nearly 50mpg as you can see from my fuelly badge below.  I'd have to look through the data but I think the furthest I've gone on one tank was nearly 230 miles.

#64

I'm starting a new thread about this so this one doesn't get derailed.

Honda advised me it'd be a few months before the actual replacement part is available.

#66

Honda UK sounds like they're really screwing the pooch on this one.......American Honda handled this recall swiftly and efficiently

#67

Received my recall letter from Honda UK today....only 2 weeks after having had the 'inspection' by my dealer! Makes me wonder if the inspection report sent to Honda UK by the dealer has prompted them to send the letter (am I being cynical?).
VFR1200F (2010-2015YM) & VFR1200X (2012-2015YM)
The letter explains that there are 2 parts to the recall:
Part one will be an inspection and replacement, if required, with a current specification drive shaft. Part two will be the replacement of the drive shaft with a countermeasure part even if it was replaced during part one of this campaign. You will receive another notification letter when part two is launched.
I have copied this from the letter so that there is no confusion about the Recall details, particularly for the owners who have not had the letter yet.

I called my dealer today to find out when new parts will be available. I was a bit pissed offto hear that they don't intend fitting new parts to bikes that have passed the initial inspection, like mine did, until they've covered another 6000 miles. At that point they'll be checked and hopefully replaced. I'm not very impressed and will be popping in for a face to face chat with the manager!
#68

Recall being done at dealer on both our 2010 and 2012 as parts have now arrived. No mention of an "inspection" or let's take another look after "6000 miles"! Mandatory replacement in my neck of the woods.

#69

Anybody else notice that all the new-leftover 2013 VFR 1200's in the US listed on Cycle Trader all disappeared at the same time this year?  Does Honda require the recall be done before selling new bikes?

#70
Yes, I looked at one before I bought mine from crazybro and the dealer said try couldn't sell it until the recall was preformed.

My dealer ordered parts without performing the inspection. They just ordered them when I said I had a vfr recall notice.

Yes

#72

Seems like my super competent dealer has had several of these kits in stock and decided not to let me know they had arrived.  Getting mine done April 5th.

#73

Both bikes have been given the shaft. Dealer reports a thorough and complete shafting. When we pick up, the quality of the shaft shall be determined. Still just 5C  here (35F for those still using axe handles and such for units of measure) so pickup more likely next week.

#74

Had the recall done a couple weeks ago ...bike seems exactly the same.  :)

#75

I just dropped by my local Honda dealer to ask about the recall; I have not received a recall notice. Not too sure about what they told me I had to do. I have to bring the bike in, they verify all the info, and then they order the new replacement. Here's the kicker; I must leave my bike there while they wait for the replacement. Service manager said they have been waiting over a week for the last one they ordered. I'm not thrilled about leaving my bike at the dealer for what could be weeks. Has anyone else been told this by the dealer? BTW, mine is 2010.

#76

In the UK, this is what my Service Manager just e-mailed me:

If the shaft passes the test it is re-fitted to the bike (same shaft) and then re-inspected after 6000 miles

If the shaft fails the test a new counter-measured shaft is fitted, the recall is closed

When sufficient stock is available all VFR1200 which passed the test or had a pre-counter-measured shaft fitted will be recalled for the new shaft to be fitted.

That's pretty messed up! ...my dealer just took down my VIN, and ordered the parts against the VIN. When the parts came in I dropped off my bike, and had it back 2 days later.

I think your dealer is jerking you around, but I can't imagine why they'd want a bunch of bikes just sitting around!

My dealer wanted to make sure that I THEY were actually going to service my bike.  They didn't want to order parts and have me no-show.  They tried doing the same thing and having me drop my bike off and wait.  I told them that they could come and pick it up in an enclosed trailer and hold onto my bike or order the parts and have my word that I will bring my bike in.  Otherwise I would have brought my bike elsewhere.

I should be hearing back tomorrow about parts and hopefully get the bike in before the stupid snow fall.

My dealer told me since they were not paying for the shaft, they would need my VIN, name and address to order one. Parts were not being released without VIN's so that a dealer could not order 50 of them, and leave others without...........they said another dealer could not order one under my VIN once they ordered it - ie...one per valid VIN. Sounds feasible, but I know how they love to blow sunshine......

My dealer just ordered it when I told them I had the bike.  I didn't have the notice with me either.  I can't remember if they when out and pulled my vin, but they ordered parts, I came back in a week or so, and it was a half day to do the recall and install a new set of tires.  Not a big deal.  They certainly did not want me to leave my bike there.

Same here. I haven't had a chance to go into the dealer and wave my arms about while jumping up and down and shouting...yet. But I will find time.

That is ridiculous, find a different dealer to do the work. I called mine on the phone, gave them the vin and they ordered the part. I am scheduled to go in April 2nd to get it done. Told me 2 hrs to get it done.

Maybe other countries/states have different liability laws? They called me 2 weeks ago, said they could get parts. I rode for 2 weeks, dropped it off, a day later picked it up and easy peasy. Didn't bother with the inspection, its fairly low mileage. It was free although interesting the invoice said $1200 worth of parts/labour. Glad Honda did the right thing. Now only if they'd admit to the oil burning issues on the RR.

Went by my dealer yesterday and asked about the recall.  He ordered the new shaft and will call me to arrange replacement when it comes in.  He said that the warehouse in California has them, so it should only be a few days...I'll post more after the work is done.

I am in Canada, and told the dealer the VIN, he ordered the part, took 6 days to come in, I dropped bike off, and 2 hours later rode it home. Then we had 5 inches of heavy wet snow, since I live in Canada...
