Prb's 5Th Gen Restore And Rebuild Project!

Because who doesn't need another project right?

So here she is! A 1999 VFR 800, 28xxx miles. Been down twice, once at 50, and once at 80 on the highway. Fella lived to tell about it too. Story goes he adapted a baby and his Finace wanted bike gone for obvious reason. Anyways, I ride it around a parking lot, it started and drives straight, looks straight. Seems to be fine. It needs everything done though. Fluids, filters, oil, lights, all the plastics, and so on. The tail light, the gauges, and the gas tank are about the only things that are salvageable.

Oh the title is clean too. Never went to the insurance company when he wrecked.

Oh yeah, Sargent seat and Erion slip on came on it too. Exhaust sounds nice!

All this fun for only 1000$!

And yes, she will be a Tmac, but... May not be much to look at.

She looks like it has been a hard life. Can't wait to see what you do with her. There is a 4th gen near me in about that condition for the same money. If I had any kind of time, I'd love to build something.

This is what I love about this bike. Mine was an unloved one, the more I work on it, the more enjoyment I get from fixing bits.

I've been wanting to build a 5th gen naked... let me know if you decide to pass on finishing it...

I'll let you drool on it a little at Tmac. I pan to hang on to her though and do a full restoration.

Perhaps a polished pressure plate glistening away beneath the window. LOL. Definitely needs the Sebspeed Clutch cover treatment. Looks like a fun project and like Sweeper said, "If only we had the time." I too would love to do a project at some point.

Trying to find a 2nd hand 5th gen headlight is like looking for rocking horse shit. Been looking over here for one the last three months. Loads of VTec ones but no 5th gen. Why?

My guess is that with the 6th gen, you will usually get one headlight to survive a crash.  Since the 5th wraps around both sides, there is better chance of destruction in a low side.  I actually don't care if the plastic is broken, just as long as the back is intact.  Without actually looking, I would guess the headlight on PRB's bike would work actually work well for my purposes since my clear part is fine.  I just want to be able to switch back if I hate the projector beams

The inside frame of my headlight is broken too. It took the impact from one of the crashes id say.

Guess you should just sell that bad boy to me, I will make my own headlight

Pulled the fairings, mirrors and windscreen off today. As you can see the left side radiator has a little, uhhhh, wear and tear. But she doesn't overheat and it doesn't leak. Fairing mounting brackets are bent and broken, but that was expected. The left side fairing was attached entirely with zip ties.

Tomorrow I'll be pulling the nose cowl, the headers and exhaust. Sandblasting the headers and powder coating them high temp black, and I'll probably strip the Erion pipe down and re powder it as well. Not exactly sure yet. I've got a buddy who has a buddy with a CNC machine so I'm thinking about removing the Erion racing label and getting a plate cut out with the VFR logo in the font similar to the sticker on the fairing, then attaching it back to the muffler. I'm also gonna pull the wheels off and polish them back up and clean the black section up as well.

If I have time I may start draining and flushing fluids and do the oil as well.

I've seen bikes in better condition broken for parts.  It's great you're saving this one.  Looks like it found a good home! 

I've got a front guard, brake discs and levers. Also got rads and a vtr fan if you want em.
Post will be from Aus, but since our dollar is low, it'll still be cheap.

Anyone have a front subframe that isn't damaged or bent? Mines torqued in a couple places just enough it's throwing the alignment off.

Yeah, on the shelf at the Honda warehouse. Lol!

Bend it back

It's pretty twisted. I'm not sure if I can get it bent back enough to get it to all align properly.

I've got one of those too. I'll have a look at my front fender and the front subframe when i get home tonight.

I bought an undamaged VFR to streetfighter, so they are both in pretty good nick for parts that came off a bike with 150000ks.

Headers are off! Man they are rough. Going to sandblast them and see what I come Up with. Then a satin black high temp powder coating. The Erion pipe is gonna get a re do as well probably in gloss black.

Silver wheels look nice. I'd love to see the headers when your done, before you put them back on.

The wheels are going to be polished face, with black powder coating in the inside.

I know shiny isn't popular here, but I always wanted my old VFR to have polished wheels. So I'm going for it here.

I'll make sure to update with headers finished. Probably next week, no promises though!

Anyone have an uncracked nose cowl for cheap? Any color it can be faded or scratched. I'm not ready to get a new one yet, but need one to make the nose come together for Tmac.

I just took one off, I will take a close look at it this week & if she's good I have one....

Here is the right side fairing that was on my last 5th gen when I bought it. The fairing had a sizable epoxy repair on it that looked pretty bad even though it was not a hole. I put some red reflective tape on the blemish and rode it like that for a year before I scored like-new replacements. It is good shape otherwise with no cracks or breaks.

An update:

I ended up having to basically rebuild the whole nose of the bike. The front subframe, cowl, and lights were all toast. I figured this might happen going in, but you know, I hate it when I am right haha :goofy:

Anyways, several forum members have supplied me with great deals on all the needed parts. I can now report that the bike has a straight front end! I ordered Cree LED headlight kit on Maxswell's recommendation. Waiting now for a nose cowl to come in from a member in Washington. 

I changed the oil, swapping over to Mobil 1 4t synthetic with a Wix filter. The oil that came out didn't smell odd, or have any noticeable grit or grain to it. I may do the oil again in 500-1000 miles before getting on my 3k schedule I use for all bikes. 

The coolant system was drained and I need to clean the tank out, re attach it and fill it. I went with some extra fancy orange racing coolant. I'll have to look at the name as I can't recall off the top of my head. 3$ more than engine ice but is supposedly good for two years. 

I have a right side fairing from Kebrider, just looking for a left side and the center fairing that goes in front of the headers and I'll have functional but perhaps not show stoppingly attractive bodywork for Tmac. 

I was planning a straight swap to a 929 rear shock, but after reading and talking with Jamie Daugherty I think his conversion of that shock will be the route I go. I may also speak with him and Rick of Cogent dynamics about fork work. 

The headers will be sandblasted and powdercoated this week and mounted. Which leaves putting the body back together and hunting for missing screws and things of the like. 

I know right now I need the 4 side fairing stand off brackets, and a set of undamaged mirrors. I prefer the 00-01 style, but for the right money, nice condom mirrors will suffice. I also need an undamaged right side passenger rear set, as well as both stock driver footpegs. (just the pegs).

It's on the list, probably won't get it to you for a few more months though.

Found out my project bike has a bum radiator fan. Got bent in a crash by previous owner, locked fan up, burned out motor.

Could use a left hand radiator too if you have one.
