Removal Of Lhs Swing Arm Pivot Bearing

Hi - does anyone have any tips for removing the LHS pivot bearing in the swing arm?  There are 4no. semi-circular recesses in the bearing seat, but they are too small to get enough purchase on the bearing with a punch. 

Haynes manual isn't offering much help for this job and I'm a little stumped.  Only option I can think of is to butcher it from the LHS as I can't punch it out from the RHS.

HI guys - the problem is actually getting purchase on the thing... I'm really looking for someone who has removed this bearing themselves, and who is therefore familiar with the issues involved.  Have either of you actually removed this bearing in the past?

The 4th gen FSM shows diagrams on page 13-24 illustrating the procedure.  There is a tool listed, 07936-3710001, which appears to be what Rice mentioned - a blind bearing puller with a slide hammer for the right side bearing, with a driver tool 07946-MJ00100 to drive out the left side.     The 5th gen FSM has a bit more detailed explanation starting on page 14-28 with photos that shows basically the same thing - the same tool numbers listed.  It does not say specifically, but the order appears to be remove right side 1st with the blind puller, then drive the left side out from the other side.  Both manuals should still be available for free in the Downloads section.

I've checked both the service manual (downloaded from here) and the Haynes manual. As you say, there is a special Honda tool, which (based on google images) looks like you insert into the bearing, spread the end to give engagement and then screw the bearing out.  The other side (RHS) I just drifted out using a punch... I can't figure out why Honda would have used a different set up on the LHS, but there must have been a reason I suppose.

I will look into the blind bearing puller...

The reason I want to remove it is that I am having the SSSA powder coated and not sure if the bearing will survive the 220DegC baking process. Someone else suggested that the bearing could also expand in the heat and distort the SSSA pivot tube.  Bike has 50k miles on it, too, so would be happy to replace bearings while the thing is out.

The puller would also be useful for front wheel bearings, so maybe a good addition to the tool set.

You can make your own extraction tool using two different sized sockets, one deep socket and one standard, some thick washers and some all thread. The all thread needs to be long enough to go through the deep socket, swing arm pivot and through the standard size socket, with enough thread for a few nuts on each end. The deep,socket needs to have a slightly bigger I.D. as the swing arm pivot (where the bearing resides), and the small socket has to be just slightly smaller O.D. as the swing arm pivot but large enough to be able to fit against the bearing edges.

Using a couple of nuts on the deep socket side, one to lock against the other and a washer, put them at one end of the all thread and insert it through the ratchet end of the deep socket and put the open end against the swing arm where the bearing goes, the all thread should go through the pivot and then through the standard socket, another washer and then another nut. Now holding the deep socket side with a wrench, start tightening the nut on the standard socket side until it goes in and through the swing arm pivot and pushes the bearing through.

You may need to heat up the swing arm or use some penetrating oil to help push it through. I had used this method on one of my ATCs which had a frozen bearing, well let's say it was almost rusted in place!

I made this rough sketch, sorry it's so lite, i made it in pencil. Should be able to discern what was describe above though.

Thanks Duc2V4 - and nice sketch! 

That all makes sense, but the issue with this particular bearing is that there is a bearing seat inside the swing arm tube which almost entirely covers the end of the bearing, so it's nigh on impossible to get any sort of purchase on it.  I think the only solution is really to use the blind bearing puller suggested above... this goes inside the bearing then expands to grip the end of the bearing before then being pulled out using the threaded bar. 

Oh - and you've drawn a double sided SA...

Apart from that, top marks for the artwork :)

I think he's drawn a 5th/6th-gen SA, which has two separate "legs" at the front.  The 3rd/4th-gen swingarm is closed at the front, with only a big hole for the shock to poke through.
