Hello all, I figured I would share this with my fellow vfr riders :)

I purchased the clear signals for front rear and brake light from a british company. They claimed it to be british made, but I noticed it came out of Germany. Not sure about that one.

Putting that aside, I'm pretty happy with the rear end now, but dissatisfied with the front product- it doesn't seem to fit right and it didn't come with LED's, instead what I got was two amber bulbs with single terminals which wouldn't fit my oem 2 terminal sockets. From what I know Europe doesn't allow for running lights so they don't use the second terminal.

The rear is nice and bright , but during the sunny day is rather hard to see as expected against the clear/white housing.

I wired in a generic electronic flasher relay to stop the hyperflashing and bought a JDM Astars LED pair for the front. These are white running lights with amber turn signal option. The way I figured I'm allowed to have front facing white lights, and they do illuminate the front very nicely. The only gripe I have with these is it takes a half second to 1 second for them to illuminate after using turn signals or just turning the ignition on. I also installed a generic flasher for the brake light that I've used for a while and it works fine.

I emailed the seller letting them know the front needs work but the rest seem alright. If I could have it my way I would have bought the clear housings only for front and rear signals and brake, and reused all of the oem sockets and got some LED's of my choice as you have more options that way, and the price tag would likely be $100 or under rather than almost $300

I have some LED headlight conversions coming in mid-week and will update you all on how that turns out. I can't stand the halogen yellow with the white LED running lights on the front end, so it will have to go!

I've done some similar LED lights on my VTR1000 (100% LED) and VFR (all but headlights). I am using a Cyclops 3800 lumen H4 LED bulb in the VTR, and here's the comparison between the two bikes on low beam, the VFR is running 55/60W halogen bulbs. The LED bulb is about 300% better than the single 55/60W halogen than I had in the VTR, with a decent spread and penetration, and of course that nice blue-white light.

Nice, making me miss my 5th gen!
I purchased this kit according to the good amount of reviews and great return policy, we'll see how it turns out :)

I will likely be looking for another rear facing brake light as the light is hard to see during the day

TWO of those LED bulbs should be pretty hard to miss. Those look very similar to the Cyclops bulb layout, I suspect they all pop out of the same Chinese factory and get packaged up differently.

SnowCrash, the lights you bought were indeed designed and most likely manufactured in Germany. They were designed by Thurn Motorsports, but the actual company that makes them is allowed to sell to other vendors. I am waiting on the pre-made LED turn signals(from Thurn) and a flasher relay with factory connectors. I am also doing LED headlights.

Interesting, because the seller claimed that they were top quality british made signals. Definitely raised a brow when I received tracking info!
I hope Thurn adds oem-style mesh/foam on the outside to better fit the signals in, because my fronts are not quite as perfect as my OCD self would like them to be. I might just have to add the material myself and see if I can properly fit it then.

Will be posting another thread on the LED headlight install when they come in tomorrow, and I just scored an 8 spoke wheel on fleabay as well

....I think by now I could have afforded a used modern ducati of some sort what with all the upgrades to the viffer!

If yours is anything like mine then the foam piece attached to the cowl is old and compressed making it useless. I have a new right side piece but the left is original. I plan in replacing it with something else.

Regarding the LED headlight mod/conversion; very much interested in this. I assume this requires the modification to the bulb mounting to be able to use a standard H4 bulb right?....been needing to do that anyways just so do not have to purchase Honda bulbs.

On the OPT7 LED bulbs or the Cyclops bulbs, what other mods are required in order to get them to fit into the headlight housing?

Pictures of any mods would be very nice to see what I need to do.

I will be doing mine soon, I have an idea around modifying the area that accepts the bulb. I will make a seperate post about that. Edited March 16, 2016 by coupedupsubie

There are a couple of different ways of doing this. When I had my 5th gen I had a little converter ring for h4 bulbs where you snip the two nubs on the bottom and put the ring on it. There is also a way to use a coat hanger I read about by bending the bottom tabs and sticking the coat hanger wire in them

I will be taking a dremel to the housing to open up the properly spaced h4 nub holes probably tonight. Would rather just do it the permanent way and not have to worry about it again.

Snowcrash or Terry: either of you made any progress in going to LED headlights? If so would sure like to see/read what you did and how the conversion turned-out. This is something I want and need to do but want to use what you two have learned.

Thanks

Easiest way to do it would be to order an H4 LED bulb kit, trim off the two lower tabs and use a set of Honda specific H4 adapter rings. You can find them on ebay for $10 USD plus shipping. I installed mine by using a pair of old factory bulbs and making my own base plates. The heatsink was also in the way of the holding clip so I had to modify that as well.

Sorry I've only installed my LED bulb in my VTR1000, and that takes an H4 as standard so no adapter was needed. If you do get the H4 adaptor rings then you will be lopping off a couple of tabs on the LED bulb holder, which is irreversible but probably not a problem. I did not know about adapter rings when I installed a replacement halogen bulb on my VFR, I just snipped off the lugs and put the bulb in as it was, it's been fine ever since.

I have ordered the H4 adapter rings, waiting for their arrival. I also found an OEM headlight assembly and going to attemp to do the mod so that standard H4 bulbs can be used without the adapter rings. Then I will order some H4 LEDs and use the extra headlight assembly to test fit everything before taking my bike apart......weather is far too nice to not have my bike operational.

Come June it will be too hot to ride much so will disassemble at that time.

Thanks

Just a quick update: I received the OEM headlight and took a good look at doing the modification so that a standard H4 bulb would fit without the adapter rings and bending of tabs. Well....not quite as simple as I first thought.....I wanted to separate the glass lens and rear plastic from the bulb mounts.....wow is that lens ever sealed/glue'ed in place. Then there was the problem of what to use to re-attach the lens and all I could come-up with was silicon.

Okay...forget about separating the pieces....will just cut-out the areas in the metal bulb mounts......well....lots of chances to dig into the plastic and to not get a flat cut due to the angles involved. Then the adapter rings arrived, tried them out and they really work good, darn good....enough that I have put aside the modification and am going to try the adapter rings with some LED bulbs.

Do you have an oven? Pop the headlight into a warmed-up (but switched off!) oven for 10min and the glue/mastic will soften enough for you to pry the lens off the headlignt unit. I did this to my 3rd-gen headlight, which is nearly the same as yours. But I'm pretty sure Bob Peloquin's H4 mod does not require separation of the headlight lens from the rest of the headlight.

Ciao,

I know Bob's mod did not show separation of the lens, but he also stated that getting all the shavings out of the lens was a problem...that is why I was going to separate. Unable to really tape-off the bulb hole as that is where the cutting is to be done. Bob suggested a ball of some kind but I think that would get in the way.

Anyways thanks for the idea of warming headlight assembly to soften lens glue/mastic.
