Hi folks. My names Karl and new to the forum. Wondering if anyone can shed light on my current fault.
I purchased a running 2001 VFR in December and set about tidying it up. Recently I put it all back together and it would not start and the FI light was on constantly. Traced this to the usual pink/black connector badly corroded. I repaired this and the light went out but still the bike would not start.
Checked for spark and fuel and all seems ok. I then noticed the fuel pump was not priming so I tested the brown connector, shows 12v. I then removed the fuel pump itself and ran 12v direct to it. This again was working ok.
i have set about checking other things and the only issue I have come across is the side stand connector is only feeding the sensor 4.5v. Is this normal? Or would this stop the fuel pump priming?
Don't know for sure if the 4.5V is correct, but I suspect so, since the side stand switch is part of a ground signal circuit. The engine kill switch is in that same circuit. Your problem could be as simple as a tripped kill switch. Other possibilities are the fuel pump cutout relay and the engine stop relay. Sometimes, the repair may be as simple as removing the relay from its socket and plugging it back in. Corrosion / deposits can build up on the relay terminals, affecting good electrical contact.
To my recollection, the fuel pump cutout relay is under the rear cowl on the right side, and the engine stop relay is either under the right side fairing or up near the instrument cluster. The service manual has the exact locations of these components. Hope that helps. good luck.
