Should I have a voltage reading from the stator wires to ground with the bike running - I'm getting 8/9v

Where do I look for dodgy grounds - my problem is really only manifesting with main lights on.

Sorry to start another thread but but people have picked up on certain bits of my last thread but I really need to know these two so I can progress.

Another forum is claiming my stator is off based on the info I've given - I'll look in the servicemanual tonight for the correct voltages etc and make a decision based on that but I really need to know the amswers to the first two questions on this thread - have trawled the internet and the lingo and opinions are so mixed up. I'm happy to replace any part but I'd rahter not waste time and money. I'm still at the diagnosis stage as far as I'm concerned so more stator testing - hot this time and knowing those answers from the questions above and I'm away.

No this is not part of the stator test. You test continuity to ground (should be infinite), as well as voltage across the 3 legs, not stator to ground!

Please re-read any stator testing instructions you were following.

You should see 20VAC across all 3 legs at idle, 50VAC or more at 5k RPM (across all legs), with no continuity to ground. Perform these tests both hot and cold engine.

Thank you for clarifying that. I appreciate my first post was very long so the bits that interrest me get lost in the info.

New battery in had and retesting tonight - Will look for dodgy grounds near the headlights if the tests all come back ok.

Thanks for the to the point answer - just need to find all those potentially dodgy grounds now

There is a common orange ground connector on the main harness at the left rear of the bike; it is (unhelpfully) wrapped in black tape so you will need to do a little excavation to find it, but you should be able to feel for it, a rectangle approx 30mm long and 15mm deep. Haven't done this myself, but I have read here where others have taken the connector out, soldered all the wires together, then added a decent-sized wire from here to a nice bolted earth point on the chassis, which made earth problems disappear.

I stumbled across that ground block - I've ruled out ground issues for now I think.
