Just looking on ebay for vfour goodies and found a 93 rear wheel for $500 US plus $190 freight. I'm lucky enough to have gotten hold of one last year for a fraction of that. Are people that desperate to get hold of one that the prices are that crazy?
About a year ago one from a '92 with more than a few imperfections sold on ebay for $599. Then a month or so later one sold for under $100. For one in average condition it seems that about $350 +/- U.S. is a fairly common price. If you got one in good condition for a significantly less, count yourself lucky. VFR owners are just one demographic looking for them - customizers swapping to SS swingarms also covet them so that puts more competitors in to the mix.
To be honest, I think $350 is way more than I would pay. All of the ones I have bought for myself and/or acquired for others, have all been $300 or less shipped, with the exception of two different purchases. One, that went for ~$560 (shipped) but this was for both a front and rear wheel set with tires mounted on both wheels and another set I got was $180 shipped. This too was for a front and rear wheel set and the front was sold afterward for $90 so essentially this deal turned out to be a $90 total cost for the 8 spoke!
The deals are out there you just have to be ready to strike when the iron is hot and not pay more than you're happy about spending to get one.

You buy a complete 3rd gen for that with freshly painted rims, upholstered seat and new mufler..

I paid 80€ for a second-hand one never used and still in the box.

$700 for a 8 spoke that may or may not be in good shape? I can sell you a complete bolt on 10 spoke for $950 that is brand new
