OEM 12v accessory wiring help please

Hi All,

I’m planning on adding switched on USB power to the front of the bike.  Bought some 4 pin connectors that match OEM from Aliexpress (and have some wiring and a double USB socket also standing by).

Have a few questions about the Honda OEM 12v accessory socket kit:

Specifically the (4) Sub harness.

On the wiring diagram linked below, it shows the 4 pin socket connector (green arrow) but it only shows 2 wires going in – (I’m assuming that’s just a pos and neg?) – and nothing on the other side of the connector.

On the Honda socket kit instructions, steps 10-13 show the wiring on the bike and the sub harness.  The male “bike socket” shows what appears to be two wires (step 10) but the sub harness looks like it has 4 wires on both the male and female sockets that connect to their respective bike sockets (steps 11-13) – (and two for the 12v power socket). 

Is the female “bike socket” attached to anything?  If so, what - and are 4 wires needed (and what are all 4 for)?

I’m planning on tapping into that accessory socket to provide power for my double USB socket up front but am not sure why a “Y” design is needed.  I’m thinking that splitting off (or tapping into) makes sense if you need to keep something else attached or the circuit needs to continue further…  ?

Does anyone have more info on this?  For those of you who have installed the Honda accessory socket kit on the 8th gen, at your convenience, could one of you please take a few pictures of the sub harness or provide wire colors matched up with placement in the male/female/12v sockets?

A Y design is needed if you are tapping into the bikes power circuit.  I never really had a look at Hondas design of their set up. I know on my uk bike there is a separate plug you can connect to.

on your diagram you have a fused live and an earth  o don't know whether it is switched or permenant without having a look at whole diagram.

Hi Samulex.

Sure is a little confusing but I think I've worked it out (Haven't fitted one myself though).

On the Australian and Euro models the 4p bike plug for the "option rear" actually has 4 wires. This is to allow you to connect up the Spyball Alarm System, Honda Part Number 08E50-EWN-800E. (the additional two wires are a NON Switched 12v from the 10a Clock/Haz Fuse and a wire running to the Turn Signal Relay Pin 21 Answer Back.)

It appears the American version doesn't have this option nor the 4 wires at this plug as per your circuit diagram, just a Ground and a Switched Positive via your Accessory 10a fuse, which is all you need for the 12v outlet.

So, to keep it universal the Sub Harness has the extra wires to cover this, so that both Alarm AND the 12v outlet can be wired. The not used 4 wire plug of the Sub Harness is there for the Alarm System, though this is not available for the American bike.

Just connect it up as per the instructions and you should end up with 12v at your outlet ONLY with ignition to on. Or if you are making your own lead with a mating plug to the bike, (two wires) the green is ground - and the other wire Black/Yellow is your switched positive 12v. Plug it in and your done.

a little more research on the pink wire which goes to "ANS BACK" that led me to this thread (thanks to those in that thread too!), 

and finally getting under my seat and looking at my specific layout, I believe I've finally got it sorted...  Thanks again!

Good news, so you do have the 4 wires. Just remember that the Black/Yellow wire is your Switched via ignition 12v and the Red/Green is a Non Switched 12v.(always on). Your common neg (ground) is the Green.

Yes. The pink wire feeds into the Turn Signal Relay Pin 21 Answer Back! Suggest this would used when the Security Alarm is fitted, no doubt to flash your indicators when arming or disarming the alarm system, as well as flashing the indicators whenever the alarm is triggered.

Excuse my ignorance, but if we connect to the extra plug for the switched power, would I just need to connect the yellow black from the plug to one side (86) and the green from the plug to the other (85)?  Then I can run the battery positive straight through to provide any amperage I need?  

I've hooked up relays before by tapping power and creating a ground but this would be much better to use the extra plug.

Hey GP, I THINK that sounds correct.  One thing though, does the gauge of the wire connecting Relay/85 to Ground matter?  The wires going to that auxiliary/accessory socket are pretty thin (18ga maybe?  I'm not sure)...

Would you suggest that the pink wire Pin 21 needs 12VDC applied to it to make the indicators flash? The reason I'm asking this is I installed an alarm and I ran wires up to the front and back indicators to activate them. If this Pink Pin 21 works like I think I can remove and clean up my wiring.

Sorry I can't really help you with this one as I don't have the full service manual, so not sure if it requires a 12v or a ground input. The OEM alarm system part number is 08E50-EWN-800E it also requires a wiring adaptor that plugs into the bikes 4p socket part number 08E70-MJM-D00. Try Google on these numbers and you'll see them, but can't find any installation details.

Perhaps someone out there with the full Service Manual or has fitted an Alarm may be able to advise you.

Need more info the circuit diagram just confirms the pink wire goes to pin 21 of the Turn Signal Relay.

Does the sevice manual provide any description about the relay and the use of the Ans Back input ?

My curiosity is tempting me to put 12 volts to it just to see what will happen but I'm going on a bike run this weekend and I don't need problems...........plus I know better than to do that......I think. lol

Can confirm 12v applied to the Pink Wire (Answer Back to the Turn Relay) DOES activate all 4 signal lights.

Decided to try this on my own bike, via a 100 ohm resistor (just to be safe), connected 12v from the battery to the Pink wire pin, all 4 lights go on. Note, they don't flash just remain on for as long as the 12v is applied. I did this with the Ignition to OFF as would be the case if you were using an alarm system.

The turn relay has its own switched and Non switched power source, no doubt for the application of a Security Alarm System.

You are a brave man! You have the same curiosity as me. I appreciate the info. When I get back from my bike run I'll test this out with my alarm. If it works out I can clean up some of the wiring I have going on.
