I am planning a September ride from Southern Oregon (Ashland) to Coloradoa (Boulder) and back. I don't want to ride The Slab the entire way, though. Any ideas?

Hwy 40 is your friend in Utah and Colorado ;) Loads of small awesome roads in Utah, if you have the time.
Don't know how much time you have, if you can enter or exit CO through the southwest you will open yourself to beatiful roads. If not, as slo1 said, 40 is a great option. From Steamboat Springs go thru Trailridge and drop into Boulder from Estes Park.
That's two votes for Hwy 40!
