:twist: For all V-Tech owners who are looking for a full catless exhaust system I'm letting the cat out of the bag ! :p Stock 98-99 VFR 800 headers are a direct bolt-up to our V-Tech's and only lack a center stand bumper mount. These tubes are slightly larger in dia than the 02 up bikes and the up pipe connector comes out at the same angle as the 02-up, so the stock undertail riser slips right on. This stock unit offer's better flow than removing the guts of your Cat and the larger tubes should provide a little better top end HP. All you need is 4 new exhaust gaskets and a set of used headers. Finding a used set isn't easy and will only get harder as this gets out, so get on the ball ! Enjoy !
Wonder what improvement/or loss it would have on the low end.
:twist: I wouldn't think there would be much if any low end loss, it should be one of the advantages of V-Tech with only two valves open keeping intake velocity high at lower rpm's and the slightly larger tubes shouldn't really slow exhaust scavenging much. Then when the V-Tech kicks in, it should produce slightly more top end ! I'm thinking a 8-10 HP gain should be there using a PCIII and custom map. :p I do think a PCIII is a must with a custom map made just for this mod. A custom map will maybe even improve low end too. I will be having one mad in the next few months and will be happy to share it, but I may ask for a small fee like $20 to help me cover the $2-300 it will cost me to have one made. It will definitely flow different than any other configuration. :wheel:

It's worth $20 to me just to have you do it and see the HP torque curve versus stock. Better than the movies and inquiring minds want to know.

And you know this is a fact because? Have you fitted one or is this I heard it from someone who heard it from his brother-in-law who knows a guy?

Is your bike stock, or do you have an aftermarket exhaust and/or K&N air filter? Staintunes and K&N by chance?

I had been thinking about several header mods including using a Full Two Bros I had sitting around, but FotoMoto was actually the first one to install the 98-99 headers on his 02 and it worked like a charm. It was 5-6 months ago, but I talked him into not posting it until I found some used headers myself :goof: . He ended up having to sell his VFR and I sold my Two Bros, but I did get the headers(99) he took off his 02 before selling it, so I'm ready to go. I will install them the same time I rebuild my forks. The only thing I was worried about was the angle of the collector outlet, but Doug did the install before I got around to it and it comes out at exactly the same angle as stock V-Tech exhaust ! :p All you have to do is weld on a center stand bumper tab and your good to go !

:twist: My bike is currently fairly stock, K&N, home made slip -on's, Fox shock. I have a PCIII, 02 elim., 99 VFR headers, Racetech Gold valves and springs all waiting to go on this winter. Problem is I keep riding ( got 220 miles in today) and hate to miss a good day to ride, it was 52 deg. here today. So i keep postponing to mods and we have the "Great Nash. get together next month too ! :p

This is my problem also. I don't want my ride unavailable to do mods. ???
Geez Kevin, you're just now getting around to putting them on? :p
Two additional points:
The right side black "cosmetic" heat shield behind the rear brake m/c is different between the models and I had to bend it some to get it to fit as the rear header pipes cross-over each other differently. No big deal and could be bent back to stock which I did when I sold the bike.
My custom exhaust cans became noticeably louder* with the 5th gen headers and the engine seemed to rev quicker indicating to me that the cat is really restrictive. Also, I had a TFI box/O2 sensors so I didn't notice any lean running.
* Kevin and I compared our exhausts mods while at last year's "Pig Chasin' in the Ozarks" ride. I had dual full length CF termignoni's while he had some (triumph?) CF cans "stubbies" that were shortend considereably. Even still, my longer cans with the catless headers were still louder. Yes, I know this is a VERY non-scientific comparo. FWIW.
Here's a view of the black cosmetic panel I referred to. The tab that needs bending is on the backside as is not noticeable as you can (or can't) see! :p
I would be very interested in doing this mod except for one thing: I have Staintunes with a Power Commander, K&N, and O2 eliminators. I'm using the correct custom map off the Power Commander webpage. If I would add the catless headers, I would want to use a map which takes advantage of the less restrictive headers. If someone here would like to get that custom map made, I'd be willing to contribute $ for a copy of that map program.

Actually I did see that earlier post. Only problem is you don't have Staintunes, so the custom map you'd get made wouldn't be quite right for my bike.
I guess I'm soliciting for someone who has staintunes, K&N, O2 elims and then adds these headers to get a custom map made. I'd be willing to contribute for a copy of the custom map.
On all years the headers are multiple pieces. For 02+, the main unit consists of the cat with two pipes built-in that connect to the front two cylinders. There are two seperate pipes that connect to from cat to the two rear cylinders. On '98-'01 (which are all the same according to Honda's parts database - I can't verify because I don't have the service manuals for these years) there is a main unit with the two pipes built-in that connect to the front two cylinders, and also two seperate pipes that connect from the main unit to the rear cylinders.
Now the question, do you need the entire setup? ...or will the existing two seperate pipes connecting the rear cylinders work?
Brand new, you are looking at about $550 for a complete setup of '98 main unit, gaskets, fittings, and seperate pipes.
If I can get all of these things without too much effort, I will do the mod and drive my bike to Las Vegas (150 miles away) and get the Power Commander folks (who are in Las Vegas) to make a map for me with my Remus GP exhaust. I am curious what the horsepower and torque difference is.

oh, yeah, I'd definitely like to know what the hp/torque difference is by just adding the headers. :rocks:

:twist: All VFR 800 headers have the same config. one piece that has the two front pipes, the collector(with or without a cat) and the lower half of the two rear head pipes and two sepreate rear down tubes from the head. Making three total pieces, plus gaskets. Of course the Cat equiped headers also have 02 sensor holes. You can NOT mix the 02-up V-Tech read head down tubes with the 98-99 front tubes and collector assm. ! The V-Tech tubes are smaller in dia. and will not fit properly and you would have slightly more restrictive rear down tubes trying to use them. Now the 00 & 01 VFR's might have the same size as the 98-99. 98-99 are different from 00-01, because the 00 up has a Cat. other than that they may be using the same size tubes.
Richie posted this:BTW, Ron Ayers has new 98' 99' headers for $391.00... I don't know if that's for all 3 pieces ?

:twist: Troy, I see your point ! I'm thinking my map will be very close to most after market Slip-on's vs Stock Mufflers, but not spot on to all. I plan to have them spend lots of time trying to get as much Torque at all Rpm's as HP. I'd rather have better torque to pull me out of corner's than worring about top speed HP, But I will still go after Max. HP too. :p I actually think they don't spend as much time as I plan on developing the Best across the whole rpm range Map. There looking for peak HP most of the time( that's was sells) not the most rideable powerband. :rocks:
