I bent the right mirror on my '99 and I think it's buggered. I'm looking at Emgo replacement mirrors but can only find them for the 2000 and 2001 5th gen. Are they the same or is there some difference between the '98 & '99 5th gen mirror compared to the '00 & '01 mirrors?

From what I've looked at they are different.
Here's pictures of the mirrors of the 99 compared to the skinnier 00 model.
1999 Part Number R/H = 88110-MV9-003ZA
2000 Part Number R/H = 88110-MBG-D01

Unless you specifically like the condom mirrors or you are keeping it completely original I would say just replace both mirrors with the EMGO 00-01 mirrors. You get to dump the tired, shrunken (at least mine were) rubber condom OE mirrors and the bonus is that the replacements have stalks that are a little longer than yours so you'll gain a little rearward visibility and see less of your shoulders. It was win/win for, not to mention cheap
I would prefer the no condom look. As long as the mounting holes/system is the same, I will go with EMGO.
The ones I see on line here (Canada) are part number 20-37341 and 20-37342. Not 00-01 like you mention adkfinn.
My OEM ones are on extender blocks so the original mounting gasket is long gone. I could always make one if needed I suppose.

The rubber mirror base is still available .
As for the mirrors , you can get after market mirrors that are exactly the same for a fraction of the price. Like this , on ebay £20.99
Thus order the genuine rubber baseS , 2 aftermarket mirrors for aprox £60 which is half the price of 1 genuine mirror.
I have 3 gen 5 VFR's and they all have aftermarket mirrors. You cannot tell the difference unless you look at the part number.
Rubber base, Honda part number 88113MBGDOO , £10.21 .

The 1998 & 1999 VFR800 came with the same mirrors as 1990-1997 VFR750s.
The 2000 & 2001 VFR800 mirror looks much better without the rubber boot of the earlier design - see Grum's post above.
However, either mirror will fit any VFR750/800 from 1990-2001. (VTec use a different mounting flange)

Correct, and well presented.
The Y2K bikes used a different style and better looking mirror IMO, but used the same mounting foot print.
A passing car on the other side of a small road in New Hampshire took out my right mirror with a stone last summer. Did not break the glass but took out the knuckle. Half a roll of electrical tape kept me on the road, but the mirror buzzed and it was redneck as...
Ordered a replacement but have not installed it yet as I had my OEM's on after I got home.
Not sure if it was a misprint or what by the Canadian supplier, but the part # given matches with a 00-01 VFR, adkfinn was right.

Yes you can make your own, a bit of truck inner tube, razor knife and a hole punch and 10 minutes will give you pretty much an oem gasket.

The part number shown in your photo is the same part number I mentioned earlier.
I misunderstood adkfinn when he wrote EMGO 00-01. I thought he was referring to a part number. It was the EMGO mirror(s) for the 00-01 VFR he meant, which are indeed part numbers 20-37341 and 20-37342.
All clear now.
I ordered a pair and I may just make the rubber gaskets. Doesn't look like they are available in Canada other than from a Honda dealer.

I didn't realize the Y2K mirrors would fit 3rd gens, good info.
I did put them on my old 4th gen and on my '98 5th gen....

Yep, I put a set on my yellow '99 VFR800, and a few years later put that same set on a '92 VFR750 that I'd picked up. Sadly both bikes are lost, like tears in the rain.
Anyhow here are pics of them on my bikes.

They look far better without the condom. My current mirrors are on extender blocks and frankly I never liked the look of the condom/extender block look. I'll have to get some OEM size mounting bolts as well.
My experience with aftermarket mirrors has always been bad, so I always pay more for new or used OEM mirrors. There is a noticeable difference in quality, IMHO.
