So I have replaced the fork oil in my '99 a couple of times over the years.
It always comes out sort of grey in color though it goes in clear to "golden"/
I've NEVER felt a difference in the ride after changing fork oil, but the ride is always confidence inspiring.
What am I doing wrong????
The web says I should be doing this that and the other , or the world will end.

I don't understand your question. Are you saying you notice no difference from old fork oil to new? Not uncommon...especially if it is just a daily rider. If you were at the limit on track...you'd absolutely notice.

The grey colour is usually bits of the teflon coating on the sliding bushings inside the fork. As a frequent fork fiddler I know that the colour change can happen in just a few thousand km.

The thread is a conversation starter , Me, trying to explore things I may have missed. I admit, I'm not a recreational fluid change sort of guy. " If it's not broke, don't try to fix it" is my motto, (within reason).
Something is nagging me that it is again time to flush and refresh those front teles. Hoping to start a "this oil is better than that oil" war...

My best time to remove the forks, disassemble, change the shims in the dampers and refit to the bike is 2 hours. I don't repeat the tonge twister as I do that work as I barely remember to breath.

I've started using UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) in EVERYTHING that doesn't burn fuel.
And that's a lot of stuff around my shop. The front forks on the VFR seem to like it, might be a bit thick on a cold fall morning till things warm up.
