I am biting the bullet and going to track my 92 VFR.
In looking thru stuff, lots of discussion about plastics and fork/suspension stuff etc... but has anyone been successful in removing the most obvious stuff that results in big weight reduction:
Exhaust (stock) was prob 12 pounds (was able to use a 4th gen on my 3rd gen, will post mods in a bit once I can take pictures).
But if you remove: Lights mirrors smog equipment fender (prob 50lbs alone) all extraneous stuff
Removing the LSF (large stock fender) from a 3rd gen bike will result in a lighter than air vehicle. You will have to register with the FAA and fly under the same rules and regulations as the Goodyear, MetLife, Fuji, etc. blimps. (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/goofy.gif)
I may be doing something similar on my '90. Right now, it's in street trim, no mirrors. I've debated removing the headlamp, and some associated stuff. The rear subframe is probably pretty heavy being steel. If I had more $ I'd see about having an aluminum one made. I'm really not so sure we can get the weight down too much, with reasonable modifications.
I'll be curious how the motor responds to losing the boombox in the exhaust. I've heard that there can be some negative effects in power delivery.
yes... first you need to dig up a cbr 900 sub frame.. all aluminum.. then it needs to be cut and moded to fit the vfr..and since its a race seat, you can cut off the passenger end.......
get some vortex clip ons,for what ever forks you get... the vfr has a steel lower triple tree.. so switching to another fork..i.e. inverted.. the clamp will be lighter but the fork heavier.. and even out more or less, but you get better handling...
if you get some air tec body work..say..rc30..your radiatior may be to wide... get some rc45....oh and some L E D brake light..
talk to busy little shop about getting rid of the cush drive and drop a few pounds...since its a 93... get rid of AAAAALL of the those big headed steel fairing bolts!!! use some aluminum ones.. get a vortex gas cap...or one like it... get an aluminum bolt kit for the motor... and titanium for stressed bolts..like the handle bars,fork clamps, motor mounts,shock bolts.....
the above list will set you back by about a grand..and will shave about 25 pounds... thats not inlcuding the mirrors headlight,turn sigs and tail light....
