i really dont see this engine making it in the next VFR but maybe a blackbird or motogp replica.

These would be cool if only for the wow factor. Are there other 5 cyl bikes? Certainly nothing currently. It would be a unique marketing point for Honda, the only 5 cyl, and a V5 at that, available for the road.

Yeah, that's the first thing I notice too. No cam gears.
thats what makes me think this is a road going version and not a $70k motogp replica

Hmmm, really would hate to see that motor without the gear driven cams. Why bother if you are not going to make it as trick as you can? Doesn`t have ridiculous VTEC though thank goodness.

Me again, thinking they are talking about the idler gear that the cam chains run on. Interesting that it is not in line with the crankshaft I think.
Just finished reading most of the first article, seems besides allowing the motor to be smaller, there is much emphasis on reducing cam chain clatter by partially covering the cam sprockets. Seems plenty trick although alot of trouble for a cam chain...
Forgot who makes this engine. But they have a chain going to the intake cam, and the exhaust cam is gear driven from the intake cam.
The problem with gear driven cams is that you can not mill the head or block if they become warpped. If you do, you change the distance between the drive and driven gears and nothing will fit.

So when was the last time we heard of VFR engines warping it's heads. It's such a rare occurance that I don't think it's an issue. even with the non-gear driven 5th and 6th gen engines that are known to run hot. The engines are bullet proof...except for the seemingly fragile CCTs on the 6th gens which admitedly is more of a hassle than a fatal flaw.
I'd really be bummed out if Aprilia decides to go with gear driven cams with their coming V4 engined bike, while Honda decides to just forget this signature VFR feature for good. :(

Read an interesting article the other day regarding the RC30 race motors having an adjusting mechanism on the gear towers so you could mill the head for more compression/allow for warpage, etc.

This was a hot topic on the RC51 forums about a 1 1/2 years ago of not being able to mill the heads. A couple of people were rebuilding RC engines, and had some issues. One was the need to true up the heads,and block, and the other was to raise compression. If you can't mill it, then what? The idea was to get HRC heads. Good luck in that idea. The HRC heads have high compression ratios (12.5) because of a different design of the head. The aftermarket pistons (Wisco & JE) are designed for the HRC heads. When aftermarket pistons are used with the stock heads, you only get about 11.5 cmpression, not 12.5. On the RC51, the gears are not adjustable.
I don`t believe they were adjustable on the stock RC30`s either. Race only, but possible.

I`d do high compression pistons. $$ compared to skimming the head I suppose. But that`s what you`ve got to work with..overbore at the same time for maximum power for $$.
