Is There Anyone Besides Me Who Doesn't Want A V5?

Like everyone else here, I have read the rumors about the possible V5 Interceptor to be released, none of which I really believe. Assuming some strange occurrences take place and this might actually happen, I know a lot of people will rejoice, but am I the only one on this site who doesn't want a V5? I'm all for trickle-down MotoGP technology, but a V5 will just be too expensive to make and more maintenance-intensive. The VFR is already an expensive bike, it doesn't need to get any worse.

Just give me a tuned-for-torque 1000cc V4, and that's my ideal VFR engine, the one I'm hoping Honda will give us.

Anyone else in agreement with me?

Everytime I say I'm not gonna' own a certain bike......it comes back to bite me, and I end up buying one.....not gonna' participate...............

I doubt Honda will produce a road going V5. What for? They used the V5 configuration in MotoGP to take advantage of certain rules which don't apply on a street bike. Also, since they are no longer using a V5 in racing, there is no longer a direct link to use as a selling point.

I would be happy if they would simply match the performance of a GSXR750.
#4
I'd like a V5, I hope they don't make it too expensive.
At the same time, I'm finding this week that a 1,000 cc V twin can really rock and roll.
#5
my concern would be smoothness, seems counterintuitive to have an odd number of cylinders in a V configuration.

supposedly, they can get around this with the V angle and firing order, but I still like the idea of a V4, V6, etc. for balance.

Rather a V-4, with more power.

V5??...I'd rather have a V6!!
The next VFR should have the spirit of pushing the conventional technology and a new/cutting edge V6 would certainly be "Ubertech" and "Uber the top"!
The odd number of cylinders on a 5 is just..uhh...odd....

Lets just have them link up two v4s,,,,,,,,, ohh that would be a v8 :goofy: Actually I'm quite happy with what I have. To say I don't want a v5 would be like saying I don't want new underware. Wait maybe I don't. Ok what I'm realy trying to say is lets see what its all about before we prejudge it. It might be practical and functional after all. Give Honda a chance. I'm sure that someone over there was born with a propeler on their head. :fing02:

Yes; I have also heard the V-5 rumor,a V configuration with an odd number of cylinders
just seems really strange. I guess I am trying to envision the crankshaft working
an odd number of cylinders, just dosent seem logical. Anyway I would think a V-5
would also weigh more than the straight 4 or v-4. But then again we are talking
Honda,so if anyone is capable of building such a thing, I think they are. Also the VFR
has been somewhat of a test bed for new technology,so I guess its possible we
could see it. I suppose we all have to be on the alert. eddie

What they could try to do, is take a V4, then theoretically double the number of pistons, and....all in theory, mind, you, try siamesing each pair of cylinders together.

Voila! All the power of the V8 with the configuration of a V4.

But, I'd bet it'd be real expensive, and the piston seals would be a @#$@#.

Just as with the VTEC engine I imagine high dollar valve lash check and adjustments. Have to see what the plus side is before I'd pass judgment.

I agree. "Because we can" is a poor reason to radically change a street motorcycle.

More performance is always nice.

But I consider the V-TEC stuff to be unnecessary from this rider's point of view. And I don't think it increases performance.

I like doing my own work and don't want things to be ever more complicated just "because we can".

+1. Having recently helped a friend work on my bike, I can say it's amazing how complicated these things are under the fairings. Adding yet another cylinder in there, plus more electronic gizmos, we're looking at a machine that some people can't fix themselves - myself included.

Count me as one who is perfectly happy with my 800cc V4. It has enough power for me. More might be nice, but I'll never outride my current bike's limitations, which are pretty far out there in the first place IMHO. :fing02:

You're telling me... After owning a Ducati 900ss and a Suzuki TL1000R, a 1000cc 90 deg VTwin is my favorite motor configuration for the street.

I know this sounds like blasphemy, but if I could put a TLR, Duc, or RC51 motor in the VFR, I'd be set for life. That's not to say that I don't like the VFour though. I'd take the VFour over an inline four any day.

Personally,
Im gonna snap up a sweet 6th gen for cheap when all you guys go running to by them. Just being honest!
#17
Yeah, I can't say I really get excited about a V5. Just keep it simply. What the VFR really needs is to get on the Atkins diet. Just get rid of the extra pounds. I really think that the ideal motorcycle should weigh closer to 400 lbs dry. I also want a bike that I can work on if I need too.

Well come to think of it you are participating just in a different way.....

Wish I could have more come back and b te me.

Then maybe would need more space for my Bikes.

Do you have info how much is a valve check on a NR? It got about 32 valves... I am just curious.

I haven't spent a dime or a minute on Vtec Valve adjustment in 64,000 miles of abuse and don't plan too!

Other than exploding, bursting into flames and killing me every time Vtec engages, I have no issues with it or the valves!

a V5? what's it matter? I suspect it won't be affordable to most, anyway. I can see the price tag getting outta hand in a hurry like the Desmothingy, NR's, etc etc... *SIGH*

If they are going to do something over the top, they might as well put a rotary engine in a bike... would be pretty interesting and quite different.

Honda rotary?? a snowball's chance in hell, I think! Anyway, rotaries eat gas and oil like crazy, and will surely be too un-PC for very conservative Honda for the near future.

What Honda REALLY should do is to bring back their ultra clean two stroke technology and update it with fuel injection and make it about 600cc's or so!!!

Now that would chop the weight problem, run cleaner than what we have now, possibly get as good if not better mileage than we have now and make this incredible square four sound.

Have I stirred up the troops enough???

While I was cruising around Yurp (on the bus  ) I saw an Italian MC magazine in one of the truck stops that had an article about the 2009 VFR. Although I couldn't understand much of the article, the photo accompanying it was hideous - it showed something that looked like the mutant spawn of the DN-01 and one of those BMW nekkid bikes. If it wasn't so hot in Italy, I would've broken out in a cold sweat. The only thing that gave me some comfort was that it bore so little resemblance to anything Honda has produced (apart from the DN-01), there was very little likelihood of it being a real bike. The scary thing was it didn't look photoshopped - apart from the DN-01 resemblance, it was unique.
Oh - and from the little I understood, it was a V4, not a V5.
#28
4 or 5, it won't matter. I can't afford one (right now).

Now, when it comes time to replace my 33,xxxKM 02, I'll certainly look at the new VFR, so long as it RIDES the same. 8-12 hour tours are super easy with the current model, and I can get up and ride it to work the next morning without any pain (other than the fact I'm going to work). If they can build me a bike that is as comfortable, agile, stable, and quick (both starting and stopping), then it will almost CERTAINLY replace my current ride.

I hope they keep it listed under "sport bikes" on the lists too. Swap in a touring screen, raise the bars, put on the bags. Now it's a "sport tourer", but still a sport bike at heart. You can always ride a fast bike slow, but not always the other way around.

There are 6 excellent generations of Interceptors to pick from if you REALLY need a V4, so how can you fault Honda for moving forward to a V5 if it makes a better bike? I understand that Honda doesn't always seem to act in a rational manner, but a V5 certainly sounds interesting. And furthermore, if you're a traditionalist, perhaps you should step back and recognize that the Interceptor has developed into a bike that is far removed from the focus of the original. I own an original and have 2 friends who own a 3rd gen and a 6th gen and have spent enough time on the other 2 to know that they are far removed from the original intended usage. And honestly, the cost of maintaining one of these bikes is really not that bad. They are as close to maintenance-free and bullet-proof as anyone could hope for on a such a capable bike. Go buy a Rebel if you really feel the need for neolithic simplicity. Hey Honda, bring on the V5!

Preach it brother! :fing02:

I'd be happy with a V4, 750cc's, good brakes and suspension (C-ABS if you have to) and skip the unneccessary and heavy gizmos that make it too complicated (VTEC, LBS, etc.) If they put it on the CBR diet and exercise program but make it a comfy V4 I'm in in a heartbeat.

Ditto.

I've been saying that since I got my 86 model in 95. They started it in 86 (some here will argue 83) and let the gixxer take over a couple years later. Honda bowed out and Suzuki has ruled since. Yes there was the RC30 & RC45 but there were really no race replica full production versions as the VFR went to a more sport-touring design in 90 and up.

Yes, but someone in Honda's marketing saw fit to put stickers on paint an I4, 1000cc CBR like a 990cc V5 and 800 cc V4 MotoGP bike, because that's a direct link.

At least within 25 lbs in the weight department!

Id like a V4 1000cc, slipper clutch, push button auto blip downshifting formula one style, ABS front and rear linked...less weight would be nice...Factory bags standard... In yellow

BUT I can't afford one so I'll stick with the bike I have... If I sell the bike I have now I am done with moto's...
#35
I'm fine with a V5 as long as they make a little brother V4 400 for me. I don't care to have the size/weight of a sport tourer liter bike. Give me a nice blend of comfort and sport, light, likes to rev but distinct V4 sound/charisma. I'm really thinking this size bike lower in the price range would give Honda a big hit.
#36
I would take a V5, but it depends on the configuration. Not really interested in full-on race configurations anymore. I can ride an upright naked on the street just as fast as a supersport.

That being said I was looking forward to the new K1300S but this economic BS has taken the wind from my bike drooling sails. Sadly I need to chill for awhile and see what happens. :pissed:

I had the Suzuki RE5 1975 motorcycle and its not all its cracked up to be and very unique but under powered much like my 1976 Mazda Cosmo that is getting a 1993 5.0 Ford motor swapped in it soon :)

Yep and not to mention as stated above lack of power that the produce for the amount of pollutants the expell ......... Sure you can make them go fast, just dont try to breath behind them or have it pass any smog laws...

Its pretty much confirmed NO V5 is coming out in the VFR but we will all know OCTOBER 1st so stay tuned !!!
