Safety Wire?

I am getting ready to do a track day at the streets of willow on the 20th and they are now requiring to saftey wire the drain plug and filter. Anyone done this on their VFR and what did you secure the saftey wire to. I emailed their tech dude and he said it was ok to secure them to the header pipe, but I am considering other altenatives. Thanks in advance.

I think I drilled a hole, or there was some existing hole in the oil pan I used.

I hope you have a drill press, or a pre-drilled drain plug. Use a hose clamp around your oil filter to wire it, or use a K&N which has a hole in it already.

on my 5th gen, there is a section of webbing(metal) or casting part near the plug. it is vertical and extends about 1/2 inch down. I just drilled a hole in that thing and wired it up.

There is a company out there that sells pre-drilled plugs and jigs for drilling them, but in a pinch you could probably chuck it up in a vise and do an alright job.

Get the safety wire pliers, makes the job much easier!

Bolts are pretty hard so bring plenty of bits, you'll likely break a few. The K&N 303 filter has the hole thru the nut on the end that makes it real easy to wire up.

Im Doing a trackday at Barber in july and although It is not required for novice I am looking for a predrilled Kit or just the side case bolt and oil drain bolt predrilled if possible.

I suck at drilling anything and dont have the tools for something like drilling a bolt head..

I found a predrilled Oil Fill plug and caliper bolts at http://www.tastynuts...te/frameset.htm

I plan to send them a Email asking about the other bolts but if any of you know where to find them that would be very helpful.. Tasty Nut is in the UK across the pond..


Any one with the tools to do this I know of 2 people in need of these items..

I always thought a saftey wire was something to kill the bike should the rider fall off. I think I have seen holes in kill switches for that purpose, but now I'm not so sure...

1. There's a little blade of material that sticks down in front of the oil drain plug on 6th Gen's that are perfect to drill a hole into and safety wire your drain plug to.

2. As safety wiring is standard procedure in the aircraft industry, go to an outfit called "Aircraft Spruce". Their website is: http://www.aircraftspruce.com When you go there, type in "Safety wire drilling jig" in the search box. This is the neatest little jig for holding all different sizes and types of bolts for drilling for safety wire. Done properly (slow drill press speed and lots of lube), you can drill lots of bolts with the same bit.

Unless that is a left-hand threaded bolt, that will never pass tech inspection. Actually, there are several examples on that web-site that would never get a signature from an A&P.

I'll agree with that, if you have the right equipment... But for the average guy, in his garage with a drill press, not wanting to make a mess by slinging cutting fluid all over, high speeds and light pressure will yield much better results. A lot of "pecking" with the bit will help keep the chips clear and stop binding and breaking.



Honda bolts are "dished" in the middle. Don't even attempt to drill right on through. You will have to drill half way from each side.



I don't remember where I saw the original of this. But here is a nice fixture I built for corner-drilling nuts.

Funny that I just read this article to see if I would learn anything new.

The blade-shaped handle of the oil fill plug can be easily drilled, and Honda has conveniently left a small ear around an adjacent engine-case bolt that can be drilled to serve as a safety-wire anchor. Next, a large hose clamp will need to secure the oil filter in place. Simply locate the clamp mechanism next to the engine case to prevent the oil filter from rotating.

I just used the first safety wire photo I came to on google images. That one there looks like it would turn almost 1/2 a turn before the wire would do anything, and the guy didnt twist it.
