Powder Coat My Swing Arm Black

ever since I was on the sales floor deciding between my red or the anv edition 07 I wanted more black on the bike. I went with the red but I wish I had the black frame. I've already painted my radiators black and I figure I can handle removing the swing arm...shouldn't be too difficult but how bout the frame and the front forks?

After seeing the 09 it's just gonna kill me if I don't do this.

I would install it myself, but the surgery I just had on my knee really limits me right now (it took me three days to re-setup my living room entertainment center when the wife bought new furniture last week,) so I am letting the shop do it. I prefer to lay low and buy parts, paint/powdercoat them, then install... this is much faster than pulling your parts and sending them out. Additionally, I can always go back to stock this way.... and have spares in case I decide to pull a Cornercarver patented Deal's Gap wipe out (oops! did I say that out loud?... sorry Keith) LOL Just kidding Keith. Anyway, I am down to the forks, rads, and frame... the frame being the only stock part that will be done. Once the bike gets back, I will get working on them as I have two months minimum until I can walk/ride again. As soon as the bike gets back, I will post pics for you. That's what I'm talking bout! All the black looks painted though, not powdercoated. I would rather paint, mainly the frame and forks cause I don't wanna remove those parts. How well will paint hold up on those parts? Is it just as good an option to paint as it is to powdercoat?

You actually can't tell from the pic if they're powdered or painted, good powder and application looks identical although powder will hold up better to dings and chips as well as many chemicals. It's generally a little heavier though when weight is a factor but in your case you will never notice the weight difference. Paint would be fine on all pieces in reality, although on the SA powder would hold up to rocks and such better and as with the forks, powder may hold up better than paint due to bugs, rocks, and debris as well as (possibly) fork oil if your seals go out.

I've done the forks, frame, passenger pegs, rotors, all fasteners and rads so far. All just paint at this point. Good prep, (some sanding, wire brush, degreaser) good primer and a decent paint. The pegs have held up well. The forks, I have good hope for although be prepared to touch up from time to time. The frame though really needs to be powder coated. Mine scratches easily. Its just hard to get a good bond with that smooth finish even with the primer. Doesn't matter how many coats of what you put on.

Painting is cheap (just time) and won't hurt anything if you decide to powder coat it later. For me, its paint it now and ride. If it only need minor touch ups, good enough. If it looks horrible after a season or two.....time to save up for powder coating.

i think Honda looked to Ferrari in choosing shades of red for the VFR. unbeknownst to many, Ferrari doesn't use the same color red on all its cars. the "typical" red they use for their street cars is virtually identical to the Italian red Honda uses. The red Ferrari uses on their race cars is a tad bit lighter and is virtually identical to the winning red Honda has also used. the cherry red Honda used on the '07 is also virtually the same shade of red Ferrari uses on their luxury cars.

I love my 07 red but have you seen the 09 red with black frame and forks...perfect!

I held the swingarm at T-MAC and it is beautiful.

I have a 2003 Silver and I am thinking I would really like to do the frame, rads, Fork lowers and swinging arm. Just haven't decided what level of dis-assembly I want to get into. What type of paint would be durable and attractive is also my concern. I think anodizing would look the best but who's gonna do that? I also don't know if I want to smooth the parts first or maintan the pebbled surface. Maybe a rubberized satin black?

Just wanted to tell you, tour bike looks GREAT. I have a nice looking 4th gen that I would like to do that to (powder coat). I think a 4th gen would look HOT also.

Having race tech GV's put in the forks and decided to have the lower powder coated black along with the heli-bars and upper triple.

With all the running around buying parts, powdercoating them and switching them.....wouldn't it be cheaper just to trade in for an 09 with all the stuff already painted installed and warrantied by Honda??
I suspect the point is the fun doing the mods in the first place. At least it keeps the money going around, and we need that right now!
