Better Sound - Snorkel

Question:

remove snorkel from the airbox, and there will be a better sound. But it's ok for the incoming air? A honafreak told me that there will be less power. Honda doens't put something that's not needed. Other suggestions? Cutting in the snorkel, like in two. Better?

Well,.......... That depends. From what I've seen,.... It seems subjective.
A) Removing it, I don't believe will hurt. The ECU, should be able to handle the change, without it going outside of any perameters.
B) I believe it is there to deter any forced induction. (Not that a lot of air is going to be forced into that area, with the frame, in the way).
C) You may want to grill it, as it would be that much more intising for critters to make it a home.

If you like the noise, roll with it. So far,....I've never seen a H.P. diff. And no one has been able to prove there really is.

Honda (or Yamaha, or Suzuki, or Nissan, or Toyota, etc) doesn't put something there that's not needed? Agreed - but what is it needed for? You would be surprised at the amount of crap on any modern motorcycle or automobile that puts there because it's needed to pass some emissions/insurance/EPD noise test. Not everything on your machine makes it go faster or perform better.

Only a portion of the noise a motorcycle makes is made by the exhaust. The incoming air, chain, sprockets, cams, crank, tires, ad finitum all contribute to a motorcycles noise.

No matter what the corporate propaganda says, it's there for noise reduction.

Read the disclaimer on your OEM muffler, the one that says that "any modifications will hurt performance" or other such verbage.

Then, wonder aloud why WSBK teams don't run stock mufflers if aftermarket ones "hurt" performance so much.

Then, read my .sig below........

Oh, here's my airbox, 100.6 dyno verified HP last I checked.

you need to state what year your bike is, but in general, removing the snorkel will not affect performance and will add a wonderful new sound to combine with the gear whine!

It's a 98, in his other thread...

Little question.

There is a little sound coming out of my airbox when I take the clutch when riding. It's little but strange. It's a 1998 RC46A. Normal? Is it a valve?

LOL. And that is your only mod. LOL.

Give or take all of the variables, I would put a + 15 hp, to a +or- 7Hp. Sooooo, I say, it is all subjective,... again. (Unless you're Toro or Jason). LOL.

I need to have my'n done. Willing to bet, I'm within 2 ponies, of 'ya.

Well hell, I'm within two ponies with my '99 completely stock 'cept the StainTune!

I removed the snorkel from my 5th gen and while it did add a glorious growl, it also produced a loud metallic/ticking sound as the bike wound its way past 6000rpm. So much so that in a panic, I actually put the snorkel back on to see if it was that... Sound gone...
Anyone elses do this? It was pretty loud. Easily heard over everything going on, and I wear earplugs most of the time! The first time I heard it I thought something mechanical was about to let go!

Took snorkel and carbon canister out first thing. there is a chance that the engineered resonant air intake is adversely affected by removing the first stage of the air box. The air box itself is designed to resonate at a frequency that inhances resperation by the engine induction cycles. It aids in the pumping of intake and exhaust cycling of gasses into through and out of the motor. Whether this results in actual gains or quality of power is not noticable enough to my seat of the pants measurements to say one way or the other. That said, the snorkel, airbox, and exhaust are all engineered by highly educated engineers who feel it is true that altering any part of their equation will adversely affect performance. In my mind, not so much. Having changed out the exhaust and installed a power commander I've pretty much charted my own path anyways.

well, on my 5th gen, removing it made more noise, less low end responsiveness, possibly a touch more at high rpm.

the lack of low end responsiveness and smoothness made me put it back in. i am runnig a custom exhaust, slightly highe than stock fuel pressure.

dyno numbers dont show it because what you lose is at part throttle at low rpm and off idle.

Switch it back and forth a few times and see if you agree.

Let's clarify the issue with some data here:

Hello list ...

Had the opportunity to do a back to back dyno test on the VFR800. We'll let

Subjective comment: Noticeably louder intake noise. Doesn't sound like a
sewing machine anymore. Changes the character of the engine. Feels raw,
sharper edged. I will be leaving the snorkel out for now.

Here we go again.....haven't we beat this horse enough?
#15
The VFR orchestra consists of three parts: exhaust rumble, gear whine, and induction roar!!

combined, you have beautiful music!
#16
Good stuff Canuk!

Again, JMHO, without a large jump in HP, seems to me to be splitt'n hairs. (LOL. 90% of you folks could out ride ME, on a 68 hp bike, anyway).

My bag. I brought the riding crop. LOL. Who has the whip?

Sorry to go so far off topic. I did have mine off. Put it back on. It was a little rougher, lowend. I'm sure it could have been fixed with a P.C., but at the time, I didn't have one. Now, I poop before I ride.
#17
I removed mine too. I have set-up so that I can go back to stock without to much trouble. When I dynoed mine stock, it was 92hp. BUT I had mouse problems! LOL Next spring I'll redyno again to see what happening with the mods I'm doing.

On my RC51, I change the whole air box. The stock was 14 liters, The one I put on was 24 liters. The bike picked up 11hp from 3000 to 10,200 redline with that as the only change!

Stock on the left, Thorsten's on the right.
