for you dutchies out there... i heard some rumours about coloured running lights not being allowed (notice how the front signal lights are continuously lit on my canadian model vfr). will i have to rig those to come on only when actually signalling?

Yeah, you are not allowed to make any modification to the lights of a motorised vehicle. That means that if the bike does not come with factory installed running lights, you are not allowed to install them afterwards. But I am not sure if this also applies to you as your bike is canadian and as long as it has a canadian plate it is not subject to our regulation.
It looks good sitting out there. I would love to take my 5th gen overseas someday. Hell, if the other guy was getting sworn in today I'd probably have my bike on a boat already.

Cool. I spent a year studying just down the road in Leiden--brought my VFR, too! You might want to plan some trips now--the roads around there couldn't be flatter if they'd been reclaimed from the seabed...
(I've shipped bikes from California four times, always using freight consolidators who fill ocean-going containers.) I've no experience with registering overseas as, gosh, I don't think any of my US-registered bikes are locally registered :blink:, but my understanding is that you may have to snip one wire in your front indicators, as most European regs don't allow amber running lights in the front. Other than that, it kinda depends on the flexibility of the authorities in the NL. Your speedo is already KM/h, and your headlight unit is at least designed for the same side of the road (although its optics are sub-optimal DOT-spec, most likely). My one experience importing into NL convinced me not to try that again--the other times I shipped into Belgium--no awkward questions asked!

Oh, seeing your chain and lock reminded me of something...believe it or not, motorbike theft is a very organised enterprise in Europe, and also in NL. I was more than a little bit shocked when two thugs were spotted in broad daylight attempting to remove the u-lock from my VFR where it had been parked outside a student house in Leiden (a fairly small town, not a big city like Amsterdam or Rotterdam). They were only deterred when it became clear that the pensioner tapping on his window across the street wasn't going to look the other way. He told me later, and the building's caretaker then allowed me to park it behind a locked gate, off the street and out of view. (Nice folk, these cloggies... ;p ) If you leave it parked there in an even larger city like Den Haag, you're asking for trouble.

Many riders that have to park their bike outside on the sidewalk use something like a wall anchor, as shown in the pic below, that you attach to your house or another umovable object and to which you can attach your chain lock.

Hmmmm.. a motorcycle show in Europe would be a cool thing to go to. You should be able to find all sorts of MC goodies we don't get at this side of the pond......just avoid the Honda booth/display....it's been a big bore at all shows lately.....unless you're looking for the "revolutionary" DN-01! :biggrin:

thought i'd add some information, in the event that it'd help someone down the road.
orange running lights are not legal here... so the front signals will need that functionality disabled. from looking at the wiring diagram, it looks like a simple disconnect of one, continuous-voltage wire from each signal. i won't know the best place to do that till i get some fairing off and have a look, but it shouldn't be overly complicated. hopefully i can find the connector shown on the wiring diagram and just remove the pertinent pins and tape them off (ie. avoid clipping anything). wonder if my neighbours would mind me doing that on the sidewalk?
rain gear isn't an issue... i'm fully equipped. the bike was a commuter in canada.

Yes, just pull off one of the outside wires of the 3 to each front single. Don't remember which one, but I disabled mine years ago. :cool:

Should be the Orange/white and the Light blue/white wires. Or just fit single-filament bulbs, perhaps? Not sure if that would work, but it might...

The only actual Dutch beer I miss is a seasonal one, Brand Sylvester, but it's only available around Christmas/New Year's (probably sold out by now). All the other good beers you find around there are Belgian, IMHO. But, there are still good reasons to visit a Dutch pub and partake of a few biertje (at a time)! :biggrin:

Yeah, last year we had snow first & second week of march but you did go for a ride with wife's uncle didn't you? It only takes one sunny day to go out for a ride and have some kibbeling for lunch :biggrin:
