Need A New Battery

Here is a ? for all you engineers out there. Does it matter if I put a battery with more Ah and CCA than what the Tech Pub call for? My 6th Gen was built in 02 and has the original battery in it. I found this one.

Don't think it matters as long as the battery specs exceed the written specs. Might try these guys, http://www.apexbattery.com/. I just ordered one from them, they have free shipping on orders over $50.

The other battery you can use (YTZ14S) is originally from the ST1300.
Works perfectly fine; in fact I have one in my 5th gen with a spacer underneath to bring the top up to proper height.

As long as the physical attributes are compatible, the voltage is 12v and the C.C.A. or Ah ratings meet or exceed the stock unit, you're good to go.

I'd be wary of the two you listed, however.
They have lower C.C.A. specs than the original batteries:

XTA12A-BS: 175 CCA vs YTZ12S: 210 CCA
XTAZ14S: 210 CCA vs YTZ14S: 230 CCA

INstall the st1300 YUASA battery , I highly recommend

Its worth the money performance wise , think I paid around $110



No question , no need to worry, this is the Best you can buy for a 6th gen and its exact fit on size as the standard vfr battery.

I bought a few things from calsportbike.com a few years back and had no problems with them.

Sixty five bucks for a Yuasa YTZ-14S sounds awfully cheap. They usually sell for around 100 dollars. I think I paid 95 for mine.

Actually it is 65.99+ 65.00 to make the total 130.99 plus shipping. If anyone has a less expensive source please post, I have tried the www.motorcyclebatteries.com but it seems like a dead link.

But really, I have bought a few batteries from there and they all worked perfectly. They basically have the exact same batteries with all the same specs, but not a big YUASA sticker on it. Plus, they are cheaper.

a ytz14s retail is over $200, on the net they can be found for around $110, $65? Not the real thing IMO

I just replaced my battery after 6.5 years, and 85000km.
Its the stock Yuasa for the '99.

They have Scorpion for about $40 less per battery, but given Honda electrical history, I opted to replace with exactly what came with the bike.

Walmart....hasnt let me down in over a year...even after a R/R failure, and winter without trickle charge...but i just guess Im a cheapo...

I'm with you. I paid $60 for my battery at Advance Auto 16 months ago. Previously, I've bought batteries at Sam's and Walmart.

Wal-mart & Sam's might work for other equipment, but I've Never found an AGM battery there. They all have "old" style electrolyte & chambers that can leak. NOT my idea of what I'd want in my VFR.

As I said in an earlier post, I put an OEM Yuasa into the Shadow last year and ran me like ~120+. I'm actually in need for one for the '04 VFR myself, and came up with the following as a leading contender after a decent search:

Again, the fit/dimensions seem right, the CCA @ 250 is Better than the 14S (and Has the right dimensions, not those for the ST-1300), and the amp #'s are close enough (11 vs 10 OR 11). I Can't justify what a OEM Yuasa costs, at this point, and can't Imagine an open-topped "conventional" battery (from Wal-Mart or Sam's, for instance) in the Bike, either.

Guess I've been lucky. In 24 years, and 5 motorcycles, I've never had one leak. :huh:

This post turned into a rough-draft of my memoirs so I'd like to offer a summary-version here: My Yuasa YTZ14S no longer holds a charge so I bought a replacement. After much research, found a Scorpion YTZ14S from ::BatteryStuff.com:: for $68.00 and free shipping. Ordered yesterday, should be here in a few.

Also purchased a Battery Tender Plus from ::Amazon.com:: for $40, also with free shipping.

Hello All,

You've heard the story before: After two years, my Yuasa YTZ14S has stopped holding a charge. The biggest difference with my tale is that I'm quite convinced that this failure is due to my own carelessness (used a trickle charger sans a float-charge mode. AGM batteries don't take well to being over-charged...).

My usual attention-to-detail towards my beloved VFR seems to have declined since changing jobs last year, which ended my required daily commute across the Bay Bridge.

Now, however, I'm determined to do better and have been researching the crap out of replacement battery options (and a different battery tender, of course). Naturally, I initially looked at buying another Yuasa but immediately threw my laptop across the room when current pricing showed ~$150. WTF? Sure, lead prices have been gradually increasing these past few months, as seen here, but compared to when I last purchased a Yuasa, it's actually down by 60%! Alas, this isn't a macroeconomics forum so I'll leave it at that.

Enter Option B: Aftermarket / Generic / Chinese battery. I read loads of posts and reviews on replacement Yuasa batteries and came to the conclusion that if the dimensions and specs closely matched my YTZ14S and if I took care to keep the thing correctly charged using a correct charger, I would be fine. Let's all pray (not really) that this is the case.

In the end, my decision was based purely on specs, price, and several positive reviews from other veteran riders. $68 for a Yuasa knock-off and $40 for a genuine Battery Tender Plus was exactly what I wanted. Ordered the battery yesterday and it looks like I should receive it by the end of the week. The tender is coming via Amazon's Super Saver Shipping so I'll probably get that one sometime in June ;p

Highs of 79 degrees in San Francisco this week - hope others are enjoying good riding weather.

I just posted this in another thread a few days ago, but thought I'd add my $0.02 here as well. I have a 5th gen, so my battery is a YTX12-BS. Wal-Mart carries this battery for $53 + $9 core charge. It's an AGM battery, and while they certainly don't advertise that in bold print anywhere, it is printed on the box. While I've never owned a Wal-Mart battery before, I have actually read good things about their car batteries recently (including in consumer reports I believe). Most batteries are all made by Exide, Delphi, or Johnson Controls, so it really doesn't matter where you get it from or what brand name is on it. The Wal-Mart battery requires you to add the electrolyte after you purchase it, but it's very simple. The electrolyte comes in six small containers that are all joined together and have aluminum foil over the top. Basically, you turn them upside down, stick them in the holes in the battery and the battery punctures the aluminum foil. After that, just let the electrolyte drain into the cells until the containers are empty, then install the string of cell caps that they give you and you're finished. The battery is effectively a sealed battery from now on. You are never supposed to remove the caps or add water. Just charge the battery and go.
