Big F Project

So, after about a year of finalising the engineering on this bike, I finally got the wheels powdercoated. Not sure about the front fender though. Was thinking blue, but now I`m thinking white.

Looks GREAT Thomas. Yeah, I vote white or real CF. :cool:

Dunno why I hadn`t considered Carbon. That may be the answer. Might be perfect since a white fender may be too much white in front.

CF it should be! White would be way too much white in the front since the newer fender is so much larger in appearance than the stock one.

Great looking bike, you might have be thinking blue though, it would flow with the blue strip well. Carbon also would be good too though.

I was going to write the same thing before I even saw the second post. I like period colors but CF would just blend it so well and add some more modern cred to the mix.

I love the other bikes hiding in the shadows... Nice fleet.

Well, I just ordered a Tyga CF fender on ebay that looks like a quality piece:

Of course the Tyga sticker will have to come off...

If it doesn`t work out, I`m sure it will look killer on the Mutant, of course I can always paint the stock fender if that happens...

Dutchy, as far as CF on an 80`s bike, it should flow well with the carbon Akra muffler already on the bike, maybe not period correct, but neither is the upside down front end or the 5.5" rear wheel! It sure works well though.

I may experiment with a R/W/B fender combo when I repaint. I`ll be repainting the entire bike in stock colors once I finish my flush mount gas cap modification on the spare tank.

Whoa, looks great. I was going to say blue on the fender but that CF fender is nice, should blend in nicely. Excellent work.

I`m not, but willing to save $. If it works out I may want another since I`ve got a few sets of RC forks here. Trying to make Dirk`s calender deadline, but paint isn`t going to happen by then...I don`t think....what do I have to do?

I would have opted for white, with a twist... I think the fender would look 10x better with some creative trimming on the sides of the forward half, to make it look smaller & lighter - then paint it white.

The CF should look cool though too!

You gonna do a double shoot w/ the F & R?

Sounds like a cover shot to me...

I vote for blue but CF wouldn't look bad at all.

Looks great, but agree that the red fender isn't helping with the fantastic looks of the rest of the bike.
White fender w/red or blue accents or a blue fender with white accents! :biggrin:

Yes with about 3mm to spare between the chain and the tire. Works great. Gotta love modern rubber, took it for a ride after the powdercoat, new wheel bearings, and swapping the tires back on, think I surprised a couple kids on newer 600`s...I think they couldn`t believe an old dinosaur could lean over that far... or an old bike...

Just passed by these guys as they were sitting at a red light and I was making a fast left turn in a triple turn lane, surprised myself that it leant over that far and was solid doing it. I think stock suspension and tires would have been wobbling all over the place...

No, stock paint. I will repaint but will do it close, if not exactly, stock. I have a full decal set waiting to go on when I paint.

The exhaust is a Holeshot 4-1 header section slightly modified to fit the Akrapovic midpipe/muffler. I just modified the header section so the Akra fits and sits how I want it to.

That bike looks outstanding! But for some reason, I just keep thinking it would look great without the front fairing.

Well it does have USD forks... looks better than I thought it would, but I would've gone with blue... hey, you could always paint the CF one blue!! Hahaha

I wasn't expecting the CF fender to look so good. Maybe somebody can photoshop it blue just to see how wrong we were.

sorry to pull up this old thread but i cannot seem to find your build on your 1000F and have a question. In using the RC51 forks what triples did you use and were there any special clearance issues?

Well I guess I should have taken one last Saturday ...with the police car parked behind the R as I was getting a $250 ticket.
Dunno how motivational that one would have been though!

I`ll have to start taking some outside photos now that I am actually getting out some!

Well thanks for that! Don`t apologize. I`m glad there is still some interest in my old projects! Thanks for all the comments guys!

I used RC51 triples. I removed any screens/brackets/etc from the radiators to get as much steering lock as possible. Also the 2000-2001 forks have inadequate springs and negative preload resulting in the front tire contacting the center of the front valve cover unless you replace the stock springs and add a preload spacer or a bit of preload. The 2002-up forks are better in this way even though they are slightly shorter overall. As I mentioned before, steering lock is the most affected, so much that some who have tried it reverted back to stock.

I'm glad this old topic came back up.

as a data point can someone measure the offset and center to center of the VF 1000 or KR upper triple? my vf750 has an offset of 50.8 mm and centers of 190.5 mm

I don't have the c-c dimension but the offset I have down for the 1KR is 52mm. That's calculated offset based on published trail and rake figures.

VF, thats a gorgeous 1K!! I've always had a soft spot for them, they are the meat eating rhinoceros of the VF family :fing02:

I think some blue red accents on that CF front fender would tie it in wonderfully, but leave some CF peeking out, it'll complete the "restomod" feel of your machine.

I have not seen this in my searching but does anyone know the dimensioinal differences between the standard 1000F swingarm and the 1KR swingarm and will the 1KR swinger allow fitment of a wider rear rim and tire combo. I am considering it for an update to my VF750F . Thank s for any help provided.

The dimensions are essentially the same as far as fitment to the frame, width, pivot to axle, etc. The only real difference is the brake arm mount on the top of the F swingarm whereas the R brake arm mounts to the frame.

No difference as to what width wheel you can fit with either. I put a R swingarm on my VF1000F simply beacause I liked the look of it. I also fit a 5.5" CBR900RR wheel, but the same thing needs to be done either swingarm used.

Not quite out in the wild but needed to move them for a couple hours anyway.
