I know that the speed sensor from a 4th gen will bolt on the 3rd gen but will a speed sensor from a 1998-2001 VFR 800 bolt on? I will be using it with aftermarket gauges so wiring will have to be done anyway. What kind of signal do these sensors send? I'm going to be using the Koso RX1N despite reading about the problems with the tach people have had here. I recall Fotomoto having the stock sensor working with the Koso unit so I guess that the sensor will work if it bolts on. Wish me luck!

If you put a lead on the pink wire, put the bike up on the centerstand and rotate the rear wheel, you get pulses rotating the wheel with the bike running in neutral, but you do not get pulses if the ignition is on but the bike isn't running.
Thanks for the info. Still would like to know if the speed sensor physically bolts on the 3rd gen sprocket cover but I already went ahead and bought the speed sensor from a fifth gen so once I get it I'll know for myself.
As for the tach issue with the Koso gauges, that's a totally another topic and has nothing to do with the speed sensor. Sorry for the confusing first message.

Update on the subject: The sensor from the 5th gen bolts on and works on the 3rd gen bike.
Anyone got info on how many pulses per revolution does the 5th gen sensor give per one revolution of the wheel?
I tested the wiring with the Koso RX1N and it gives a speed reading but the scale is off so I'd need the info in order to get the speedo calibrated at least to some degree.

i didnt get to this in time, but yes, it does physically bolt up. ive got pictures of it working on my build from about 3ish years ago.
