RC45 vs CBR F4i Body work

OK, So I am moving along on my 1993 VFR track bike and getting close to getting serious about purchasing track body work. I wanted to do an RC45 front fairing but I have not found anyone who has completed that kind of conversion/project. I know they have been done but would like to be able to ask questions. Does any one have a resource for me?

So my other thought was that I would do an F4i conversion because lots of people have done them and it is cheaper than RC45 bodywork. I am not a fan of the looks but the stuff is easy to find and inexpensive.. and it is just a track bike so looks are not an issue.

Factors to consider, The bike has a R1/R6 front end conversion so my biggest concern is the clearance of the clipons. The factory guages are not going to be used, only using a tach and temp combo.

Any other considerations or thoughts from someone who has gone down this rabbit hole?

Many thanks in advance

Since the 3&4 gens are reasonably close, I'll suggest my 4gen cbr600rr mod. Track fairings for them should also be cheap and plentiful. The fairing stays are reasonably priced too especially compared to the VFR plus there are aftermarket versions.

What are you planing for the tail? RC45?

Where in New England are ya? I've got F4i track plastic you can have for $200.

Looks like this:

I have the solo race tail as well, but I don't have a pic of it. I never installed it on the bike. There are no cracks, bends, breaks, rash or anything other blems, but there are holes drilled for frame sliders and two small ones to mount the foglight up front. Easily fixable.

Let me know if you're interested!

The CBR body will be much easier and cheaper to fit I think, I'm having to make all of the brackets myself and I still haven't quite figured out the upper stay for the mirrors. I also bought some Vortex clip ons to fit under the windscreen, the 954 ones are too tall.

I'm also having to cut up the belly pan a lot to fit around the exhaust. But I think it will look pretty good when I finish

I'd be interested to see some details on your R1/R6 front, and what spacers you had to come up with

Yes, I am going with the RC45 tail section. That is straight forward. I am thinking CBR is way to go.

Front End: (total Cost for everything $400.00 except new tires)
929 - upper and lower triple tree
R1- (Yr 2000 complete except rim) Forks, calipers, axle (ebay complete front end $200.00)
R6 - (Yr 2003) 5 spoke front rim with 300mm Rotors (Rotors match the 2000 R1 calipers diameters) (Ebay $150.00)
Spacing Moved the R1 calipers in 2mm by using 2mm thick washers, Custom Axle spacers are being machined to be 20mm wide instead of 18mm (add 2mm to the outside of each spacer)

What years would work best for this conversion? Has anyone tried the 2005-2006 CBR fairings?

I now have a 2005 upper on mine. Other than the air intake treatments and windscreen, it is identical to my previous 03 upper. All the fairings (03-04 and 05-06 gen cbr600rr's) are the same in terms of installation points and can be mixed and matched. 07-present are WAY different.

Thanks for getting back to me. This is great news!!!! I am starting to get anxious about the bodywork I think this is the last "big" thing for me to sort out before I start all the "little" final fitting of things for phase one. I wish I had the time to road trip to NY. I finished the exhaust tonight, The front end has been mocked up (I just need to choose), Shock should be here in about 2 weeks etc etc etc.

Here is what it looks like...

Thanks for the feed back, it is very much appreciated.

Nice, which exhaust did you get on there? Custom job?

I'm in the middle of a CBR600RR fairing conversion for a 3rd gen inspired by FotoMotos gorgeous RCBVFR. It's a little bit more work than with the 4th gen, you have to move one coil per side to tuck it in behind the fairing. This requires lenghtening the coil feed wires on the right side or at least that's how I did it. It also required to modify the coil brackets. I used a unmodified stock front fairing stay and modded the flange the stock stay bolts on to instead. A pic:

http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/uploads/1259654404/gallery_16614_5090_151122.jpg
The stock clipons are a bit high since the switches hit the upper fairing a bit at full lock but I guess you don't have this problem since the clipons you're using are probably a tiny bit lower

I had to fabricate brackets for the rear most mounting bolt of the middle fairing piece and have to do the same for the mounting points of the lower cowl. Also the oil cooler needs a new bracket (bolted on under the lower bolt of the front fairing stay) and so does the radiator, I fabricated these out of 3mm aluminium sheet. Other than that it's a simple swap, just a bit more work than with the 4th gen. Also I was told that the 05-06 fairing is a bit more narrow aroung the radiator than the 03-04 fairing I used by someone who tried to fit the newer fairing on to the older CBR600RR. With the older fairing I only had to trim the fairing a bit to clear the radiator hoses.

Here's a pic how the front fairing looks like:

http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/uploads/1261344847/gallery_16614_5090_579174.jpg

Yesterday I got the lowers fitted, only have to make brakets for them. Also I have led signal mirrors installed and a Koso RX1N gauges fitted since the pic was taken. More to come are new subframe out of aluminium sheet with a '04 GSX-R 600 tail and a left exit exhaust with Delkevic titanium silencer and a radial master from a '06 GSX-R 1000. But more on that later.

The exhaust is only a TBR right exit and it is in its original form at the moment because I want to get all the other details sorted out. I have ideas about what to do with it but talk is cheap, I need focus on getting it ready for spring.
#14
Hey there, How is you modification going? My fairings arrived today 03-04 CBr600RR and I quickly mounted them up and I am concerned that I am not going to have enough room around the bars. I am also doing a R1 for swap so I need to finish the fork rebuild before I get to serious. I am very interested in how you are progressing.

Thanks,
#15
What forks are you using? They look like CBR 900RR. If so, did the triple clamps go on without modifiying them?
#16
The forks Are 2000-R1, Rim/rotors 2003 r6, The triple is a 929 lower and upper but I also have an RC51 upper for fitting. The whole thing bolted up pretty easy, I only had to duplicate the R1 wheel spacers and make them a 2mm wider and caliper mounts.

I am in a holding pattern with the body until my forks are resprung, then I can move on to getting items in there final locations. Just placing the fairing on the bike yesterday I could see the coils need to move and a few other items as well. I have a TBR exhaust and I think I am going to have to slice the belly of the beast to get the fairing to the correct heights.

With the CBR fairing stay how are you mounting the Radiator/oil cooler.
#17
The forks are from a VTR 1000 so I'm using the stock triples. I mounted the oil cooler on a bracket I made out of 3mm aluminium sheet and bolted it to the lower mounting hole of the front fairing stay. The current state of things is like this:

http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/uploads/1268377919/gallery_16614_5090_215151.jpg
Current state of things Trial fitting of the CBR600RR upper. Oil change in process and Factory Pro shift kit installed. Still lots to be done.

As I said earlier the stock clipons have a little clearance issue with the upper fairing but I just purchased 4th gen clipons because they should be a little lower. Just haven't mounted them yet.
#18
OK, I am picking up what you are saying. I only had time to work on the rear subframe today.
#19
Ok, I have been out of action lately because of injury but I am moving forward again.

I found a pretty good deal on some new 03-04 CBR600RR body work. I bought the upper, lower, fender, fairing stay and windscreen for $200.00. I could not pass it up.

My forks came back today(R1 with Ohlins internals) so I installed them and mocked up the body work. If I was able to ride I think I would be working 24/7 to get it finished but it will be a little while. Suspension is ready, Gearing is ready, exhaust done (for now), it could shape up pretty quick.
Maybe I will be riding it for our track session at the end of July

Wow, where did you find a deal like that?
Looking good, are you planning on replacing the subframe as well or just fitting the RC45 tail over the VFR stocker

I just happen to talk to a guy at a suspension clinic I went to who was looking to get rid of the fairings because he sold his cbr600. Just good luck and being patient. That is my biggest piece of advice; if you can pay you will get a project like this done quickly, if your on a budget be patient and expect to spend a lot of time looking for stuff you can find at a good prices.

My goal for this year is to get it on the track and start getting it sorted out. I don't want to say what I "want" to do and then not have the time or money to do it but it would be cool to do an RC45 tail. I might not have the funds to do that this year, again, I need to be patient.

I decided on the Thurn tail section. It should be here in a little while.

I will be working on the main fairing components so that I will be able to keep a solid belly pan.

I was able to mount the oil cooler to the CBR fairing stay that I am using and still have clearance so it does not rub on the forks. Once I know everything is perfect I will weld it into place and drill out the second mounting hole.

  • [image: Attached Image: CBR Fairing Stay Top.JPG]

I moved the outside coil forward and inboard so the body work will cover them. I also cleaned up the brackets by cutting what is not needed and moved all the wiring inside the frame.

The radiator hose is attached to one of the modified coil bracket and I cut abou 3-4 inches off the hose at the water pump side so it follows the stator cover ( but does not rub the cover) closer.

Fit, fit, fit... Take apart... Put back together... walk away... think... fit, fit, fit.... Take apart... Put back together.

Spent about 4 hours to day just fitting the body work. I still have some tweeking but I am close and I will be able to keep the full belly pan with some easy fiberglass work.

Yup, they were the only ones with the headlight holes, I'm at a loss when it comes to fiberglass work. It seems to be decent, though I guess I'd probably say Airtech stuff was decent if I saw it. It doesn't have any bad warping that I can see so I'll say its decent.

I have had to focus my time on some family related stuff (Something has to be more important then motorcycling) and all I have had time to do is finish smoothing out the turn signal mounts. My Thurn tail section should be here any day.

The Thurn tail section arrived last night. It is a beautiful piece and the Fiberglass work is very well done. Piece fits nicely and all it needed was a little sanding before priming. Gerhard at Thurn was very easy to deal with and responded to my questions quickly

The worst part about ordering from Germany is the time it takes to ship.

The primer is still a bit damp so I was not able to fit it as well as it really does fit. I was anxious to post the picture.

I also finished rebuilding the TBR aluminum can I had from a left hand exit system. I took it apart and realigned everything for the right side, chopped 3.5" from it and polished it.

The cabon fiber can I have looks good in pictures but does not stand up to a low side very well.

Very nice on the exhaust, have you thought about bending a higher mid pipe to it to get it up by the tail?
That Thurn stuff looks great

The Thurn stuff is really nice. Like I said the only bad part is the time it takes to ship from Germany.

This project is already behind schedule because "life" gets in the way of motorcycle projects. "Phase one" of this project was to do some of the conversions (front end, exhaust, carbs, body, electrical) and get her on the track. My next track sessions are in 10 days so I only have time to finish what I am working on. I am anxious to ride it even if it is just one day or the poor people in my neighborhood are going to get tired of hearing the VFR roaring up and down the street.

I have other ideas I wish to execute (getting exhaust higher is one of them) but I am cautious about saying anything until I have the time and the means to complete it.
#42
The wire harness and Tachometer have been completed.

Tach is off an 86 VFR with LED indicator lights added to the face for Neutral and Low fuel. Yes, it is acurate and the temp guage works. I am not an electrical guru, it was completed by a friend of mine.

Finished mounting the controls to check for clearances.
- Woodcrafter 1" rise clipons with universal brake resevoir bracket
- VFR Clutch Master
- R1 Brake Master
- R1 Throttle with modified Motion Pro cables
- Choke cable has been routed to the right side and accessed by reaching into the fairing. (simple and light weight)
- RC51 Start Stop switch rewired to match the VFR harness
- Renthal Grips

I think I am almost ready to tighten everything down. My 6 year old thinks everything works just fine.....

More important priorities are happening at the moment. Things will move along only when time allows.
