Experiences of a PCV with Autotune on a 2004 VFR800

Background

I was actually quite a happy-chappy with my VFR - the mods I had performed had already smoothed out the VTEC transition (though it wasn't bad to begin with), and response down low wasn't too bad either. My main complaint, if I was to have one, was the abruptness of the throttle control in 1st gear which made low speed work a chore (and I would normally cheat by feathering the clutch). I decided to grab a PCV (and eventually autotune) partially because it would hopefully make the bike even better at those infamous points, but also inspired by CodeRighter's efforts I decided 'why the hell not'. I guess in part this post is part of that why-the-hell-not process ;) .

I decided to buy my PCV and Autotune from the USA rather than locally - yeah, I know, frowned on by the power that be (Dynojet) but the reason was very simple - price. I don't have unlimited funds to throw about, and frankly the cost of purchasing those little boxes locally is crazy. On a good day I was looking at $AUD550 to 600 for the PCV, and another $450 to 500 for the Autotune. That means if I was getting it as cheap as I could I would be looking in the region of $AUD1000. In recent currency terms (with the $AU buying about 90 US cents) I was look at about $USD 900 if I bought locally. If I bought from the USA I was looking at about $USD 500 plus another $40 in postage (or $AUD 600, a $AUD 400 saving!). So in order to save myself some significant cash I obviously took the order from the US route. Yeah, yeah, no warranty or official support - but both parts would have to fail (and I order replacements) for me to only just be out of pocket compared to if I bought locally. I am all for supporting local business, and normally do so when possible, but I don't support price gouging by importers with an exclusive deal. I recommend to anyone else who would benefit from significant savings by buying internationally to do so :) .

As I was going to order from the US and I was in a penny pinching mood I ordered the PCV first and the Autotune about a month later (basically to pick up the items when there was a good deal on each of them). This meant I ran the PCV for over 4 weeks just by itself, and that alone taught me a few interesting things which I shall share shortly. As such, I will also break this part up into a PCV section and an Autotune section (hopefully that will also be more helpful to those not interested in the Autotune).


Going into this modification bonanza I had made a few relevant alterations to my bike (most of which are pretty much universal).
  • Disabled the PAIR system
  • Removed snorkel
  • Disabled flapper
  • K&N air filter


Otherwise, from an engine and mapping perspective, she was stock (so it still had the original exhaust).


PCV - Install and setup

Installation of the PCV (and PCIII) have been covered elsewhere, and as those guides point out, it's very simple.

All you really need to do is remove your rear seat to find some place to put the little red and black box (being non-ABS I placed mine behind the rear brake fluid reservoir, but it is small enough that you can place it in a number of good spots). Then lift your tank, fish out the designated cable connection (should be just behind the frame on the right hand) - disconnect this connector and plug it into the PCV. Now install the supplied O2 eliminators on the left hand side (you will likely need to remove the fairing for this). I tried to ensure that the now exposed O2 sensor plugs were still shielded inside the rubber electrical connector protector, but you could tape them up for extra peace of mind. After that you attach the ground wire to the negative terminal on the battery and you are set. Luckily the device comes with a pictorial instruction set showing you exactly how to do this, so you really cannot go wrong.

Where my PCV lives

Once you have done that you are good to go. There are other wires you will need to hook up for more advanced features (in particular tapping into the speed sensor for map-by-gearing and the temp sensor for... well, engine temp. but I will get to those later as their value is limited without the autotune).

Hookup your PCV to your (Windows) laptop, load the software and it should automatically pull down the map pre-loaded onto the device. Now things alter a little for the 2002-2005 bikes (as the map comes preloaded with the 2006+ map). You will need to upload a new (suitable map) before you take it for a test drive, mostly due to the VTEC transition point changes (and probably a few other tweaks Honda implemented on the 2006+ ECU). With the latest version of the PCV software this is a piece of cake - simply download the suitable PCIII map and use the inbuilt converter - easier than doing by hand (as I had to). Once that is uploaded you are good to go! You may also want to check your throttle position settings and give it a run on the centre stand with your laptop plugged in, just to check that everything is working correctly.


PCV - Usage report (or, WTF is this thing doing!?!)

I personally decided to play it conservative and loaded up the default Dynojet 2002 map. I planned on eventually giving Cozye's map a go until I obtained an Autotune. To my surprise, and horror, the default map ran like absolute crap. It's hard to find words which described the horror of it's operation, but it was shocking. Surging all over the place, bucking and general bad, bad running. Realising that when diagnosing fuel mixture problems it's 'better' to go too rich then too lean, I decided to richen up the map (theory being that if it got worse, or failed to improve, I would lean it up instead - I had noticed the default map was considerably richer then Cozye's). This helped the problem, it was better behaved (but still clearly unhappy), but as you can imagine, fuel consumption went to the dogs. It had me stumped, the bike was fine before I installed the PCV, and the only other change at the time was the O2 elims (which are needed as per the Dynojet instructions). Clearly there was too much air in there, causing it to run lean. The only other clue I had was it was much worse below 6000RPM then above.

Resolved to solve the issue, I decided to start restoring parts of the bike to stock to see if some other change had caused the problems. Seeing as there are not many relevant changes made to my bike I decided to do it in two steps - first the flapper and snorkel, if that didn't work, the PAIR system and air filter (I planned on returning the air filter to the OEM model eventually anyway, but I'll cover why at a later point).

First up, flapper and snorkel. Up goes the tank and I man-handle those two back to their original function. I take the bike for a test ride and suddenly - wow, fixed! Still a little grumpy at me, but night and day type change from before - I safely put the remaining grumpiness down to the current map just being a default one rather than a map tweaked or custom made for the setup. My theory is that the flapper was at fault (because frankly the snorkels impact would be small compared). With the flapper disabled the bike would pull in too much air below 5500RPM (which from memory is it's cut-off, or rather, fully open, point), which when in closed loop mode would be compensated for by the ECU. Eliminate those O2 sensors and suddenly it doesn't work so good any more. Of course, this doesn't make sense in light of the number of people out there who have no issues with their PCs or O2 elims with the flapper disabled, but it did the trick for me.

So the lesson there is - if your bike is running like crap after you have just installed a power commander, check you air intakes.

After restoring the flapper I loaded up Cozye's map, which run rather well really. Over the next few weeks a tweaked it by feel, and the map progressively got better and better (well, felt like it anyway). I decided at that point that PCVs are great, and keenly awaited my next new 'toy', the Autotune.


Autotune - Install and setup

As I said above, I obtained my Autotune a little over 4 weeks after I had installed the PCV. By that point I was happy enough with my tweak-by-feel version of Cozye's map - enough that it would make a good base map to start with for my Autotune adventure.

Installation is pretty easy again, but there is a bit more to it then for the original PCV. As long as you have the tools it should not take you more then 90 minutes (including drinks breaks) if you take it slow and check you work. May I suggest you take it slow and check your work (I'll tell you why shortly). The instructions are pretty good so you should follow them, but they are not as good as the instructions for the PCV unit (I guess that's because they are generic all-bike instructions).

A few tips:
Do not forget the CAN terminator - you put it in the spare plug on the Autotune, not the PCV.
Make sure you install the cables properly - on the Autotune module there is a membrane protecting the internal connectors which you have to pierce - I used a small jewellers screwdriver first to do this, which made inserting the cables a piece of cake.
Make sure you get the cables in the correct order.
You can install the sensor in either of the O2 sensor positions (one is for cyl 1 & 3, the other cyl 2 & 4), but you will have a much easier time of it installing it in the leftwards most one (see pic).
I thought the O2 sensor cable connector (used to plug the sensor into the extension that runs to the module) looked like it was asking for dirt and crud to get into it, so I cocooned it is electrical tape. Probably not necessary, but I would rather not spend a few hours down the line cleaning it out with compressed air and contact cleaner (see pic).
I suggest hooking up the speed sensor and temp sensor wires now. Save yourself the trouble of doing it later (even if you don't intend to use either, though you really should). A decent length of wire will suffice, and use either posi-taps or slip the wire into a connector trick to connect them. See the below pictures to see which wires you are looking for on the bike. Remember these go to the PCV itself, not the Autotune.

Once I had everything install, I popped the bike up on the centre stand, turned it on and let the bike warm up with the PCV plugged into my laptop (so I could see all the readings). Much to my horror, the AFR continued to be reported as 9.99 - according to the instructions this is a bad sign. I went over and double checked everything but it still reported 9.99 - but no other errors and its little LED was blinking correctly. Turns out that before I wrapped up the 12v connection for the Autotune (which powers the O2 sensors heating element) in electrical tape, I forgot to actually connect the lead to a 12v source! (whoops). Once I did this everything went fine. Lesson here is make sure everything is correctly hooked up - and no heater, no working, even though the exhaust would have gotten it up to operating temp.

Final setup is easy too - Dynojet supplies a default AFR map which you can use (and after taking a quick look it should be fine to use the 2006+ AFR map on a 2002-2005). I cheated and recycled CodeRighters existing good work, which I then altered to suit my needs (basically leaning out where I tended to cruise). Activate the Autotune functionality in your PCV software and you are good to go (I'll cover gearing and temp shortly).


Autotune - Usage report (without by-gear mapping)

For a couple of reasons, the main one being the KISS principle (ie. keeping it simple) I decided to start off without using all that fancy PCV stuff like map-by-gear and accelpump. I figured I would get a handle on the basics first, and then move on to the advanced features. Let me summarise the rest of this section for you - don't bother with that crap, just skip straight to map-by-gear and set the rest up right to begin with - yeah, sure, there is more points of failure where a mistake could cause problems, but it will save you a lot of screwing around otherwise. There are now a few who have blazed this trail before you (and CodeRighters write ups are an excellent resource, so use them) so you can just copy what others have done.

Now for the detailed information. The Autotune worked, it actually worked rather well - considering that it was not made for the 2002-2005, nor supported, I was a little surprised at how easy it all was (sure, there isn't that much different between 2002-2005 and 2006+, but there are key differences, enough to cause problems). I started riding, it started trimming, I started accepting these trims and letting the Autotune work towards a nice balanced map of its own. The trims were pretty mad to begin with, but I sort of expected that - I figured it would work itself out over time (basically averaging its way towards an approximate optimum).

To help demonstrate what�s going on each time you go out for a ride (and then accept the new trim tables) here are some nice pretty graphs coming some sets of readings. For reference there is an average of CodeRighter's map (which he made using his autotune over some considerable time), there is the base map which I started with, and there is the fuel map from a number of 'reading' points were basically I have accepted the trims after a decent amount of riding (normally in the region of 100km). I have only included 2% to 20% throttle maps as they show the greatest amount of change (it starts to get less and less after that as I tend not to ride around at 60% throttle much).

Graphs are great to see what sort of changes are going on, and clearly show the Autotune adapting as you ride (though you can tell that through feel as well). Unfortunately what these graphs don't is how it feels, and let me tell you, it felt like crap. Absolute crap. Similar to when I first installed the PCV, but in a different way. At points it was snatchy, at others, it was surgy, others boggy and occasionally bucky. Just bad. The real bad part of it was that it would switch between good and bad over the course of a ride (so obviously the system was trying to fix everything up).

I'll try to describe exactly what I felt was going on, and that should also make my eventual solution clear. I would start off and everything would be going fine, Get up into 2nd (which I tend to use as my suburban speed gear, so 40-60km/h in built up areas) and move off from home, all is good. Shift up to 3rd which I use for normal use 60-90km/h (and if I want some VTEC action 100km/h+), and things would feel bad, a little boggy, unresponsive, but it would fix itself shortly. Continue onwards basically switching between 1st, 2nd and 3rd (so suburban riding ranging from streets to main roads to avenues). Over time, it would get worse and worse and worse, and always at its worst just after a gear change - so I would be sitting at a particular RPM and throttle position for 2nd gear, then a short time later, same RPM and throttle position in 3rd gear, and it would run like absolute crap (sometimes even to the point where it felt violently unsafe). I would then later switch back to the same RPM and throttle position in 2nd gear (as I move between roads and streets) and it would be running again like absolute crap. Normally it would resolve itself, but it tended take a couple of RPM 'sweeps' (basically open the throttle a little to increase the RPM, close it a little to drop it below the range in question, then re-open, and re-close, do this 3 or 4 times and the feel improved, but wasn't really fixed). The solution was clear, map-by-gear - clearly the setting that the Autotune was establishing for a particular RPM and throttle position combination would work in one gear, but not in another. You can sort of see the problem in the graphs where between one reading and another there has been a crazy change - which I took to mean that in one trim-accept the last time I was at that throttle and RPM point I was in one gear, and at the other trim-accept I was in a different gear.

Lesson here follows, just go straight to map-by-gear. Really, it is that much better.


Autotune - Usage report (with by-gear mapping)

Map-by-gear is pretty easy to set up. There is no gear indicator on our bikes so we need to basically tap into the speed sensor and let the PCV do some quick calculations to turn speed and RPM into what gear we are in. It's actually pretty simple.

First you need to tap into the speed sensor. Basically hook the correct wire port on the PCV up to the pink wire coming out of the speed sensor (see the picture I took for where I tapped in). That's it from a physical point of view. I'll get to the software side shortly.
While you are at it, set up the temp sensor (so that you can tell the PCV to hold off using the Autotune until your engine is up to spec.). You will need to tap into a yellow-with-blue-stripe wire not too far away from the infamous blue connector. This also goes back to you PCV. I just routed the wires for these two back under the tank (following most of the other electrical bundles flowing through there).

Once that is done you need to set everything up in the software. My PCV came pre-configured with the speed scalar and gearing already set, but nothing in temperature. The problem is I live in the Rest of the World, and we here in the Rest of the World use the metric system (because it's frankly easier - decimal number system combined with a decimal measuring system) and the device was set up for those strange measurements you use over there in the USA. So I decided to reconfigure it all to make my life easier - the PCV doesn't care on what measuring system you use (if you want to measure your speed in parsecs, go right ahead), so long as all the different numbers used in the maths match up.

For those interested in the figures I came up with... (keep in mind these are for METRIC measurements, some may also be applicable to imperial applications, but you are better off doing it for yourselves)

Interestingly if you take the speed scalar I calculated and multiply it by 1.6 you get a figure very close to what Dynojet supplied (a little over 9000). This is what you would expect and shows that both Dynojet's scalar is probably on the money and the one I came up with is good too.

Gearing is the next important thing. If you don't want to use the Dynojet supplied version you can do it yourself, which is what I did. Just pop the thing on the centre stand, turn it on, put it into gear and off you go (without, obviously, going anywhere). This is much easier if you have a second person to capture the gear information on the laptop, but I was able to do it solo.

For those interested, here is what I came up with.

If you want to check that your settings are good it is a pretty simple piece of mathematics. Find a speed you like to travel at and make a mental note of the gear and RPMs. Next time you have a calculator handy take the RPM, divide by speed and then see if that number you come up with fits between the high and low gear points it the PCV. If it does, good stuff, everything is as it should be. If it is pretty close to the edge you may want to recalibrate the gear ratios for the PCV, but that's up to you.
As an example, say in 3rd gear I tend to be a little over 4500 RPM while travelling at 60km/h (which is about what my bike reports, but this is an example). If I go 4500/60 I get 75. Looking at my gear calibration in the PCV 3rd gear is about 82 to 65 - and 75 is well within that, so it's about right.
That's a pretty quick and dirty way of doing it, but if something is not right and you are using map-by-gear, it is worth having a quick check of such things.

Temp sensor isn't hard to configure either. I did a rough and ready setup (in Celsius, again metric folks), it�s probably a degree or 2 out at various points but extreme accuracy is not really needed as I only use it so the PCV knows when to start listening to the Autotune (which I do at 70 degrees C).

Now onto the main show, the usage report.

Thankfully, map-by-gear saved the day. It really did fix the problems I was having before and the Autotune started to shine (which is good, the damn thing wasn't cheap!). Once you have this thing down pat it's worth spending some time tweaking - after reading some posts by CodeRighter I started playing with the accelpump function and can report the same findings as he did, setting it so that the PCV would ignore the autotune (and letting the ECUs accelpump functions work their magic) made it feel better under accelleration. I personally set mine to have a delta of 80% and for it to last for 100 revs with no increase in fuel (so it basically takes whatever the ECU says should go happen + the existing fuel map in the PCV). Also take the time to tweak your AFR table, and whenever you accept the trims, take a look through the table for any obscene changes from one cell to its immediate brother (they do slip in there, more on that shortly).

Performance is great, the whole bike feels better now, especially as I have been able to progressively refine the autotune generated fuel map (though riding!). Fuel consumption has dropped considerably as well, and I get some strange enjoyment out of taking a look at progressive graphs of changes in the fuel map (maybe that's my inner science/maths nerd feeling good about all that data!). I'll post up some more graphs from the map-by-gear setup shortly, but I have to work out which ones are worth looking at (as obviously there are many, many more graphs then pre-map-by-gear - about 6 times as many!).

The main issue I have encountered is when the Autotune decides to be silly with neighbouring cells. As in, say at 5% throttle, 5000 RPM you will have +15 in the fuel map, and then in 5250 RPM you will have -15 in the map. The Autotune, I think, allows this when you are decelerating (sudden rush of air from the decel vacuum confuses the O2 sensor and makes the system believe it is running really lean, so it richens up that cell). This problem should be resolved next time you pass through that cell on the way up, but sometimes that may not happen for a while (typically in a RPM/throttle/gear combination you do not experience frequently). This only affects the system for a very short period of time, basically that period before you fully close the throttle (as the autotune is ignored at 0% throttle), or when your RPM levels out if you are only partially closing the throttle. It does become a nasty problem in one set of circumstances, if you are cruising along with a steady RPM and throttle position, that just happens to be close to the transition point between 2 cells of significant difference, you can enter this sort of self supporting cycle of cell-jumping - basically, you enter into the 'bad' cell, the engine is suddenly starved of either fuel or air, as such power drops and with it the revs, they drop down into a 'good' cell, starvation is resolved, engine happy, revs jump back up into the bad cell, and so on. Very annoying, and as the Autotune is a post-mortem device, it doesn't seem to be able to pick up the problem very well. The only solution I have found while out on the road is to shut the throttle, let the RPM drop below the good cell, then power back on (gently, you are aiming for the problematic throttle opening AND RPMs) and let the bike rev up to above the 'bad' cell. Do this 2 or 3 times, problem solved. Another way (though it takes a little longer) is just to increase the revs in the 'bad' cell so that it is above the transition point, the Autotune will then resolve it on its own (probably as it is getting a stable reading from the O2 sensor). The problem would probably go away if Dynojet implemented a 'reverse' accelpump (a decelpump if you will) that would tell the PCV to ignore the autotune over a particular throttle-closing delta.


And as I promised, some graphs (with analysis) for Autotune with map-by-gear. I have tried to select 'interesting' graphs (because that means alot less graphs to save, upload then embed!), but if anyone wants a particular comparison done, just let me know.

Less then 10% throttle 1st gear is very erratic - I put that down to the fact that at those sorts of throttle positions I am powering up rather then level cruising, thus the fuel map will change frequently due to fuel, temp, and just how I feel like riding that day.

At 20% it seems Autotune wanted to stick to around the default map (which is basically Cozye's) - this remains the same at higher throttle openings - where Autotune has made a change it hasn't been dramaticly different from Cozye's map.

Common theme here seems to be enlean-enrich-enlean-enrich. That there are not dramatic changes between readings is a good thing, the changes are more or less stable. The pattern seems to match up with where I am winding up the revs to get to speed (or when coming out of a slow corner), so I am not staying in 5% for long, then it leans out where I would be cruising, then starts getting rich again when I am wanting to stretch the bikes legs.

At 20% things start to richen up again. Interestingly Reading 6 there was straight after a very spirited ride in the hills and twisties, yet it is wanting to be leaner then the others.

At 40% things start to look a bit more uniform, but I don't spend much time in that area when I am going around town, so the chances to get a reading are reduced.

2%s tend to be very erratic as I tend to be either opening or closing the throttle at that point (rather then allowing time for a refined trim while holding the throttle steady). Even so, this graph is interesting as you can spot clear trends at particular RPM points.

An interesting map due to how much change there is from one reading to another! Also a few interesting rouge spikes (which I think is related to the decel issue). You can also see at 5750 RPM from Reading 4 to Reading 5 that if you don't get back to that point in the map the 'bad' cell data can stick around for a while (we are talking 150-200 km here between readings!). Reading 6 eventually smoothed it all out though.

My map wants to remain leaner longer then CodeRighter's, but both again indicate Cozye's is too rich. I would put the differences between CodeRighter's and my maps as differences in mods (as I have my bike currently as stock as possible in the air/fuel department).

This graph is good because you can clearly see the decel issue at 5000 RPM. Now imagine sitting at about 5000 RPM, bike is starved for air, looses revs, drops to 4900, suddenly has a higher air to fuel ratio, jumps back up (due to now normal power), and cycle. Clearly the 5000 RPM reading is an error.

Autotune - Looking to the future

As it is all running well, I am starting to turn my mind to what to do next with my Autotune. I am thinking of running some experiments with it - mostly to see what sort of effect many of the common small mods have. One thing I would like to try is to disable the flapper valve again and see what the Autotune thinks (ie. will it richen up the mixture due to the extra air?). Also I wonder what changes to air flow my K&N filter has (which is why I put the OEM back in). Never know, I may even be able to spot some evidence that those budget mods to have an impact on performance (though the scale, and whether it is positive or not would remain unknown). I'll have to think about all of that.

Labled image of the device in its housing - note that the USB cable is there on a permanent basis - I have it set up so that I can remove the USB type A plug from under the seat (and put it back again) without having to remove the seat at all - a real time saver!

This is actually the first time I've seen a this detailed report or even paid this close attention to how in depth the autotune is. I'm impressed. Look forward to hearing more about your experience as your weeks go by, I may have to see about doing this myself, just to have a hands on and see the comparison is after riding with PC3 for years. So, what target AFR values did you use? 13.2 across the whole range?

Did you just take Cozye's PCIII map, convert it to a PCV map, enable Autotune and leave the stock AFR values?

I used Cozye's map for the PCV to begin with, and tweaked it as appropriate. Not huge changes, but just fixing up obvious problems (normally boggy points or hesitation). Then I used that as my base map for when I got my Autotune.
After that, as you read, I used CodeRighter's hard work for the AFR side of things. I believe he just tweaked the default anyway, but he has been running it for a while and his bike hasn't exploded, so I guess that's as good an approval as anything. I played with it a little myself (mostly leaning out where I tend to cruise for fuel efficiency).

A dyno tune set-up AFR map would probably be good - but hey, that's more money I don't really want to spend. AFR tweaking is a lot easier then fuel map tweaking - with the fuel map you are taking a stab hoping to get a particular outcome (AFR) - with the AFR map you are telling it the outcome you want. Seriously it's a matter of working out (from your own riding habits) what you tend to do at particular throttle positions at various RPMs (in which gear, if you map by gear), and changing accordingly. I am currently operating on a 13.2 for performance, 14.0 for max fuel efficiency range (and everything else in between). In most cells I still have 13.2, in the cells I tend to 'utilise' the most in day to day riding I have tweaked around. For example, if I am doing 60km/h in 3rd gear I am probably commuting or taking it pretty easy, so the 3rd gear AFR cells which correspond to this sort of speed I have made lean (13.6 to 14.0). 100km/h in 3rd gear however, I am looking at something a little more fun (and obviously dialing up some VTEC enjoyment) so the AFR would be around 13.2 to 13.4. The beauty of the Autotune with map-by-gear is this flexibility, I really can make the bike do all things in one package - from a super smooth, super quite late night suburban street ride (<4000 RPM), to a light on the pocket touring/commuting/cruising machine, to a dial it up to 11 twisty munching performer. And if I ever change my mind, its easy to quickly reset everything to what I want out of the bike! In my rather humble opinion I would rather be able to fiddle as I see fit to meet my needs rather than have a dyno tuner set my AFR tables for balls-to-the-wall performance from 0 to 12500 RPM. A good tuner who would be willing to put together a couple of different AFR maps for different performance requirements however... well, that would be interesting, just to see if there are any spots which are a little unusual to us amateurs.

I'll post up my map shortly, it's still a work in progress (hasn't had the maturing time that CodeRighters has, nor have I been able to ride recently - first loads of crappy wet weather, now I have a ruptured ear drum). You can analyse at will. I'll also post up more graphs to show how it all works.

He did, and he reports it as being an excellent solution. Personally I think it shouldn't be necessary, Dynojet should be able to take decel into account software side. Failing that it is a minor annoyance really, and in the long run for me it will be a toss up between the effort required to fix using a vacuum switch and the frustration it causes.

It also stops you from having two distinct maps, does it not? If you bond the switch to controlling the autotune, then it's not available for map selection.

I noticed my PCV eating a lot of memory just with a map-by-gear without Autotune enabled. What percentage is consumed when map-by-gear *and* autotune is enabled I wonder?

If you have a toggle switch AND autotune is enabled the toggle switch wont switch between maps. Instead it will switch between learning mode (ie. Autotune does it's thing) and the base map with the latest trims 'applied' (apparently). I don't know what the applied means, that is, if they are accepted or just added on, but that is what the literature says.

Sadly no switching between AFR maps on the fly. Would be cool if you could do that though (and give you even more customisation!).

With map by gear and AFR by gear enabled and a 250RPM resolution, I have 54% usage. Yes, enabling map by gear really sends it skywards, I have effectively 3 maps for every gear (giving 18 maps in total!) - an AFR map, a trim map and a fuel map. Not sure how it would work with independant cylinder control enabled as well, but you would probably cut it close.

Can I ask a stupid question, once the autotune has established an AFR that you are happy with over the entire range, do you disable the autotune and just use the maps it has created or is the wideband sensor used all the time so adjustments are being constantly made?

Not a stupid question at all!

I think it comes down to personal choice - I guess you could disable it, remove it and then ebay it on to the next chap if you wanted to. However, you can adjust the max amount of variation from the base map that the system will allow (I currently have it set to +10 to -7 from the set cell ammount). As you progress with increasingly more accurate maps (and your trims should start to get smaller and smaller) you can decrease these values (the default range is +20 to -20). That means once you are happy you can largely eliminate the problem on decel simply by not letting the system enrich over a certain amount (less then say +5 is not likely to have a dramatic effect on performance, assuming a good base map). Keeping the Autotune and using the max variation limits also means your bike will continue to refine and adapt as you put different fuels in, temperature changes, even air pressure or altitude. None of these should result in a dramatic change, so tight limits allows your map to remain on target for those AFRs regardless of conditions.

(its things like that which really make the Autotune stand out!)

Yeah I guess so, I was wondering what the lifespan would be like on the 02 sensors, say for instance it went bad, would that throw everything out or would it revert to the last good map, or would you have to replace it and start over.
I guess like a PC3 you would save a good map to your laptop and then reinstall it if the need arises???

Hundreds of thousands of kilometres!

Ripped from Wikipedia, it says:

"Normally, the lifetime of an unheated sensor is about 30,000 to 50,000 miles (50,000 to 80,000 km). Heated sensor lifetime is typically 100,000 miles (160,000 km)"

The autotune sensors are heated - this is why they must be connected to a 12v power source on the bike.

I am liking what i am reading here! Tops efort :fing02: I have just today ordered the PCV. I did not get the auto tune though. Sorry to go :offtopic: but do you think the auto tune is needed? I will be putting mine on a Dyno as i have NFI how to set this puppy up.

Hey GPM, I'm having no luck with my temperature sensor. It never reads above 48 degrees on the Powercommander (I used your starter voltage and temp)

I've tested it with a multimeter, and it's tracking the voltage just fine (and fairly close to the numbers you posted - with a couple of degrees as you say). When the wire is hooked up to the PCV though, it sits on zero until the bike hits 48, then shows 48, but never rises.

Note I am running the stock firmware.

Any advice mate?

Depends on what you want - people have been using PCIIs and PCIIIs for years without the Autotune option (and normally they opt for a professional map) and I don't think too many of them complain. On the other hand, the Autotune really costs about the same as a good dyno tune anyway.

They way I see it, Autotune is great for people who like to tweak, make progressive changes to their bikes and want to maintain optimum performance, and those who just like fancy gadgets (I fit in all three :D ). If you wanted one I wouldn't advise you against it, but if you don't think it's needed (or don't have the cash) that's a valid option too. The trick with the PCV is you always have the option to add it later if you so desire.

As I posted above the huge advantage of the Autotune is that you are in control of it all - not just relying on a dyno tune to get it right the first time (and they normally do a pretty good job), not relying on tweaking on the fuel map by feel (which is kind of like taking a half educated stab in the dark), but instead you set the end result and the magic box will try to deliver it.

For $250-300 I think it's a good accessory. But hey, I like to tweak, mod and have gadgets ;)

First, as it is not clear on what you wrote, you will need to input all the temp voltage points - the PCV does a little magic math to come up with a 'best fit' progression through the points you enter. The more points, the more accurate that is. Obviously if you only enter one voltage point, the PCV will likely treat all voltage readings as that temp.

If that's not the problem, remove the wire from the PCV end and test the voltage there (I assume you were testing at the tap before). The fact you get a reading should mean it's not a continuity error. I had some trouble getting the speed reading to work, turned out to be a bad connection, which is why I removed the pin from the pluged and crimped my tapping wire straight on (problem solved!). All else fails, check all the connections again.

Yep, I have all the temp points. I have been measuring the voltage right at the wire that goes to the PCV - ground goes to the battery directly, same as for the PCV.

It's just bizarre.

That's a bit odd. You have them all plugged into the right 'ports'? - from the nearest edge it should be - unused - temp. - speed - rest unused -.

Try removing the wire, grab a jeweller�s screw driver and pock it down there (obviously make sure power is off!) - it may be you didn't pop the membrane fully. Another way to tell you have it in there correctly is when you remove the cable the copper bundle should be squished. If it is still the same shape as when you put it in (likely nice and round) you either are not getting it in far enough or not getting enough contact.

I know the temperature can be a funny beast - going from memory (it's too late to play with my bike right now) you need to set the bike to run (so start the FI sequence, etc) before it will register at all - with the ignition on by kill switch set to 'kill', it should read 160 degrees or so (basically 0 volts) - once the FI sequence is done it will be stupidly inaccurate (as in negative temps) until it starts to approach the first voltage point (so the 48 degrees). As I only use it to tell the PCV when to start listening to the Autotune, I didn't care enough about the oddities to see if they could be fixed (and frankly I don't know if they can be).

I'll try to take a look at my setup tomorrow with a fresh pair of eyes - maybe there is something I have forgotten, seeing as you are getting the right volts at the wire the problem may be software side...

Yeah it's odd alright. I mean it reads *something* because with the bike running when cold it read "0 degrees" and then shows 48 when the bike reaches 48 (as per the table). But after that, it never changes.

I put in a few more pictures at the bottom of my original post which hopefully will help anyone struggling with how they need to hook up the temp and speed wires, but I don't think that's your problem kaldek - after all, you are getting a reading.

I checked through my software and didn't notice anything else you should need to adjust - hook it up, put in the values and off you go. Could you post up screen shots of your temp configuration? Maybe there is some small error in there that is throwing it all out?

Failing that it's back to that universal tool of the amateur electrical tweaker, unhook the relevant wires and redo them...

I have updated the original post to include graphs (and analysis) of the Autotune with map-by-gear. I wrapped it up in spoiler tags to reduce the scrolling and clutter.
It's all contained within the usage report for the Autotune with map-by-gear enabled ;)

OK - TEMPERATURE READINGS ARE FIXED.

It took upgrading the firmware to 1.4.0 to get it working, however the firmware upgrade was almost a failure.

The firmware upgrade process tells the PCV to go into "boot" mode, which comes up as a device with a different USB ID. Windows XP asked me to reboot to support this new device ID, and I think it caused some form of communication failure. The upgrade process said "error sending file" and the PCV was stuck in boot mode with the green light flashing. I flashed it again, but I had no TPS readings, nothing other than RPM showing.

Anyway I managed to get the firmware installed, but the process was as follows:

  • Tell the software to upgrade the firmware
  • Upgrade fails, PCV is stuck in boot mode (green light flashing)
  • Perform upgrade again
  • Green light goes solid
  • Bike starts, but no inputs work. No TPS readings, nothing other than rpms.
  • Reboot Windows PC to ensure all USB device IDs dynamically detect OK
  • Perform firmware upgrade again
  • All problems resolved


During the final firmware upgrade, I noticed that the upgrade process did a lot more stuff - it downloaded not only the firmware file but also a "configuration file" - I would guess this is what made it start working properly again.


Hey GPM, I'm feeling a bit like we're the pioneers mate, forging a path for others to follow once all the gremlins are sorted! :biggrin:

The '02-'05 models definitely don't. Someone said though that after '06 they were standardised worldwide and they all have EVAP now. Not sure who that was or if it is true.

I just wish the Aussie models had ABS. They never offered it here. :pissed:

Folks, GPM has confirmed he also runs the 1.4.0 firmware but also that his model came with the 1.3.0 firmware. My unit came with firmware 1.2.0, and the temperature sensor function did not work.

You will need to have either firmware 1.3.0 or 1.4.0 for the temperature sensor functions to work. GPM reported no problems with his firmware upgrade, so you also may not have a problem with your upgrade.

My PCV, which i installed May '09, had 1.2.0 firmware also and the temp didn't work either. Sorry, so long ago, I forgot all about it. You must have gotten real old stock?!?!

The '02-'05 models definitely don't. Someone said though that after '06 they were standardised worldwide and they all have EVAP now. Not sure who that was or if it is true.

I just wish the Aussie models had ABS. They never offered it here. :pissed:

Just to add to that I upgraded my firmware on a laptop running Windows 7, and went from 1.3.0 to 1.4.0. It could be that different versions of Windows may react to the upgrade differently. When I upgraded I didn't get any funny messages and Windows didn't want to restart - once the upgrade completed the device restarted and which means Windows thought it was disconnected (and then reconnected), but that should be normal. I also did the upgrade using the latest PCV software (1.0.3.2).

I tried to find a changelog for the PCV firmware, but couldn't, so who knows whats changes happen between versions, but I guess unless you hear otherwise it is always wise to update.


Out of interest kaldek, did your PCV come with a speed scalar and gearing pre-set up? Mine did, but I remember reading that CodeRighter's didn't. I am guessing firmware version and what is preconfigured will depend on how old the stock was that the PCV was taken from.

A bunch of mounting points with nothing on them (probably a good spot to put a Stebel or something actually... hmmm, next project maybe).

Where exactly do you tap in the vacuum switch? I can't imagine Honda would completely redesign everything for non-EVAP markets, so where ever the vacuum source is, it's probably just plugged off (or still in use for anything else that taps into it).

My scalar was all wrong - something like 8,300 or thereabouts. I didn't check gearing, but just went straight into my own calibration.

Since upgrading to firmware 1.4.0, I have set my scalar to your value for Km/h (5638 - very tidy thanks!) and calibrated the gears again. Lovely!

I'm so geeky, I'll probably sit there with a multimeter tonight and perform a super-duper calibration of my temperature. :schla15:

Coderighter and I determined the difference between the EVAP models and non is where the four injector hoses terminate. On non EVAP bikes they terminate on the sides of the airbox. EVAP bikes have those same hoses terminating into a 5 way T where one hose exits to an EVAP solenoid.

Coderighter removed all of his EVAP system (including the solenoid) and used the vacuum hose exiting the 5 way as the vacuum source for his vacuum switch. This switch turns Autotune on/off depending on accel/decel.

On my 5th gen non EVAP model, I sourced a 5 way T and some vacuum hose from a member and I'll plumb that to the vacuum switch to work the same as Coderighter's.

Ok, I took my airbox out so I could take a gander at the throttle body - no superfelous vacuum hoses or vacuum 'nipples'. Crap. Looks like the California model has a different throttle body.

Considering those options, and keeping in mind that I am more or less undertaking a crash course in engine vacuum bits as I write this, I think the best option would be to tap into single pipe running off to the one-way valve (I frankly don't like the idea of fiddling with the other options if I don't have to). Am I right in thinking that the 'vacuum' in this line should be the same as for the evap lines (if they existed)? My idea would be to tap into the line *before* the one way valve, basically to get the vacuum as it is coming from the throttle body - a 3 way connector (and new pipe to the valve and vacuum switch). Or am I way off and is a vacuum switch solution just not possible on non-cali models?

Well the problem you might run into is the point on the throttle in which the signal is taken, mainly whether it's above or below the throttle plates. We need to get a signal that reflects throttle position, engine load. You're looking for a source that gives a high vacuum at idle and low (zero) with throttle wide open. You might be able to "T" before the one-way and get a good signal. I'll have to pull out a vac gauge and check. SA1713 described it well, I removed the EVAP purge solenoid and replaced it with the vacuum switch. Everything that was south of the solenoid went into the motorcycle spare parts bin. I had intended on removing the EVAP anyway and needed something to plug the line. That EVAP vacuum source gave a very smooth, linear engine load indication. I've got one of those vacuum hand pumps, the kind that comes with a brake bleed kit, and I stuck in the map window on my tank bag with the hose connected and went for a day ride. It seemed that cruise was 7-11 in, so once I got home, I used the hand pump to set the switch to trip at 14in and reset at 12 in. That was it, problem solved.

So on the 5th gens do you have seperate vacuum plumbing for the EVAP and for the starter valves?

Looking at this little guide - http://www.justtees....er%20Valves.pdf, it would seem the 4 pipes terminating at the airbox are used to sync up the starter valves, and being a UK bike it should be a non-cali model. On the 6th gen the starter valve plumbing set ends up in a 5-way that leads to our MAP sensor.

Looking at the diagrams they all seem to come from about the same 'place'. At a guess the vacuum points we do have is common should be in the same places as on the cali and non-cali models (save time and effort engineering wise). In my mind the starter valve vacuum should vary with throttle, that makes sense when you do the sync process (small differences result in differences in vacuum, powering the guage). Combined with my above bit about the 5th gen seeming to recycle the same pipes for both starter sync and EVAP functions (if sa1713 is correct in the pipes that terminate normally going to the EVAP selenoid in a cali model) and I think those pipes may make for a suitable fall-back option. Looking at the throttle body the vacuum pipes tend to be on the oposite side of each other, but about level. Could be wishful thinking on my part but us non-cali owners may get lucky...

I would love to test it, but alas my brake bleeding tool is a 100ml syringe! (the 50c brake bleeding tool - works really well though)
Are there any other cheap ways to test it out - if it's like any other automotive product in this country that isn't tacky (and crappy) bling made in China, a hand vacuum pump will be terribly overpriced...

Sounds like it's all sorted then. As far as the pump/gauge, really it could be tacky (and crappy) bling made in China. It doesn't have to be accurate, just consistent. As long as your using the same gauge to read the level, as you use to set the level, you should be fine. It's all relative.

I agree with Coderighter that when it comes to implementation, test and set with the same device. But at this stage it would be nice to have some proof of concept - ie. do those vacuum lines give the desired changes in vacuum when the throttle is being opened, held and closed?

IMHO there is not much point continuing down the current path if it is not going to work.

So I think give it a go and see what sort of results you come up with - then you can use your settings, and I'll get out my wallet and pick up the requisite parts :comp13:

No problems. I will hook it into the vacuum line used for the flapper valve - it comes off that group of hoses in the throttle body, so it will be a good test.

No problems. I will hook it into the vacuum line used for the flapper valve - it comes off that group of hoses in the throttle body, so it will be a good test.


Just be sure to tap in before the one-way-valve - you can fish it out with just lifting the tank (it sits beside the airbox on the left hand side). If you have already disabled the flapper valve it wont make an ounce of difference tapping in here.

Ok gentlemen, I have some interesting new findings relating to the accelpump feature.

Basically I had noticed some noise under hard acceleration, I figured it was either the flapper getting a bit chattery (as this was suburban riding, so getting off quick as I could from lights, thus I travelled through the flapper RPM range) or it was engine knock (probably because I had 4 week old fuel in the tank, and only a small amount at that).

I thus decided to play with my accelpump feature a little to see if I could refine its 'disable autotune and let the Honda ECU accelpump do its magic' ability (as explained by Coderighter here).

Now the latest version off the PCV software allows you to not only set the TPS delta for the accelpump, but actually capture it (by storing the input when you give the throttle a good twist) and gives a live display of the delta as you sit there playing with your throttle. This I did, and discovered an interesting thing - I have NO idea where Dynojet came up with the suggested setting of 90% delta. Even when I was twisting the throttle in a way I would never try with the engine running (basically trying to open and close it as fast as I could) I was only getting a delta of 60%. From this I concluded that having this feature on and the delta at 90% per Dynojets recommendation is pointless.
It could be that Dynojet has changed the way the delta is calculated in the latest firmware (and thus their suggestion is still current for PCVs pre 1.4.0 and PCIIIs), but that just doesn't make sense to me.

Another interesting thing I noticed is that the delta readout was quite happy to show negative figures. Indeed, whenever I closed the throttle that it exactly what it would do. Now that is interesting as it means that a 'decelpump' type feature that I mentioned in my original post is entirely possible, even an easy feature to add in the next firmware (I may fire an email off to Dynojet about that as a suggestion).

Then I thought, what would happen if I set the delta to a negative figure now? I needed to go get some new fuel, so why not give it a shot. I reset my trim tables so that they had nothing in them, and set the delta to -2.5% (which matched up with a deliberate roll off of the throttle, but wouldn't hamper trigger on small speed adjustments) and set off. When I got back I plugged in my laptop (kudos permanent USB cable for making that all too easy) and looked at my trim - and it was full of adjustments. Ok, that's a little odd; this was quite a long shot so I didn't expect that at all! Ok, time for another little test, lets ramp up the negative delta to something silly, -90%. To achieve that sort of delta I would not so much be rolling off the throttle as trying to rip it off! Reset the trim and went for another quick ride, just around my local area. Got home and again, trim is full of adjustments - ok, that rules out the previous readings being from when I was closing the throttle (and thus getting a delta below -2.5%).


To me this raises several possibilities:

1) The theory that accelpump disables autotune from making any further adjustments for it's duration is incorrect (which I believe goes against Dynojets documentation).

2) When you enter a negative figure in the delta the PCV just ignores the negative part of it and treats it as positive figure.

3) Related to the previous one, when the PCV sees a negative figure it just ignores the accelpump totally (effectively a negative figure disables the feature as the firmware doesn't understand it).

4) When you enter a negative delta the accelpump activates on any delta reading less then that negative figure (ie. when you are closing the throttle at a rate greater than the one specified).


My findings do, however, seem to totally remove my original thought that if you set a negative delta the accelpump will be constantly active on increasing or steady throttle, and only disable at the set rate of throttle roll-off (unless possibility 1 above is correct, in which case this is still possible).

The exciting part to me, is possibility 4 - it is a long shot (for it to be the case the Dynojet engineers must have had some good foresight - but why not publish it as a feature?), because it could solve the over-rich-on-decel issue - at least where the decel is due to throttle roll off (if you are decel-ing due to a hill, it may still richen up, but the rate of decel should be low enough not to have dramatic effects; if you are decel-ing under brakes, well, you should have closed the throttle anyway so autotune has already stopped listening).


Now because I do love a good graph, here is some comparisons of the fuel tables for 2nd gear before I went for a ride with the -2.5% delta, and after.

No tell tale enrichments there, which is what you would expect under the first 3 possibilities - however, while it is easier to cause the over enrichment on decel problem in suburban riding, we are talking a 15 minute tour here, so the figures thus far cannot really prove any of the possibilities to be true.

Got home and again, trim is full of adjustments - ok, that rules out the previous readings being from when I was closing the throttle (and thus getting a delta below -2.5%).


To me this raises several possibilities:

1) The theory that accelpump disables autotune from making any further adjustments for it's duration is incorrect (which I believe goes against Dynojets documentation).

2) When you enter a negative figure in the delta the PCV just ignores the negative part of it and treats it as positive figure.

3) Related to the previous one, when the PCV sees a negative figure it just ignores the accelpump totally (effectively a negative figure disables the feature as the firmware doesn't understand it).

4) When you enter a negative delta the accelpump activates on any delta reading less then that negative figure (ie. when you are closing the throttle at a rate greater than the one specified).


My findings do, however, seem to totally remove my original thought that if you set a negative delta the accelpump will be constantly active on increasing or steady throttle, and only disable at the set rate of throttle roll-off (unless possibility 1 above is correct, in which case this is still possible).

The exciting part to me, is possibility 4 - it is a long shot (for it to be the case the Dynojet engineers must have had some good foresight - but why not publish it as a feature?), because it could solve the over-rich-on-decel issue - at least where the decel is due to throttle roll off (if you are decel-ing due to a hill, it may still richen up, but the rate of decel should be low enough not to have dramatic effects; if you are decel-ing under brakes, well, you should have closed the throttle anyway so autotune has already stopped listening).


Now because I do love a good graph, here is some comparisons of the fuel tables for 2nd gear before I went for a ride with the -2.5% delta, and after.

No tell tale enrichments there, which is what you would expect under the first 3 possibilities - however, while it is easier to cause the over enrichment on decel problem in suburban riding, we are talking a 15 minute tour here, so the figures thus far cannot really prove any of the possibilities to be true.

Actually, since that post, another Dynojet tech support rep told me that normal 'accelerator pump' setting wouldn't happen long enough for the Autotune to act on it. This isn't the first time I've gotten different answers to the same question. Because I have been trying to develop a real good base map, I currently have the 'accelerator pump' feature off.

On kind of a side note, I've read that Honda uses temp more than most manufactures as a factor in fuel mapping. Reportedly, as little a 3 degrees can cause a change in mixture. I've been meaning to check this, but it's been a crazy last couple months for me and haven't had much time to play.

I've also found the speed tables for gear by gear given by Dynojet are pretty close, but not exact. The table can be mathematically calculated from the known gear ratios in the service manual, but my question is where does the 'scaler' number come from?

I am guessing the scalar is the number by which you divide the VSS pulses.
So VSS reading in hz / scalar = speed. That matches the MPH scalar being higher then the KMH scalar. (note there may be more to that calculation then I am guessing here, but you get the idea).

Really stupid question. I can't find anywhere what the lights on the Autotune mean.

Edit: ok, I see its one light that is red. Should it stay on steady?

And another edit. I can't seem to get an AFR reading. I'm actually not getting engine temp either, but that could be my wiring.
What could I be missing? I removed and reinserted the wires into the autotune, but they seemed to have a good connection. I have the terminator on the Autotune (none on the PCV).

Thoughts?

You need to upgrade your firmware on the PCV to 1.4.0. We were discussing that in this thread only two days ago! :)

There is only one light on the Autotune, and it is red. Sadly it's function is not actually documented by Dynojet, but I worked it out by observation.
It is actually a status light - when you first turn on the autotune (either by turning on the bike, or by powering on the PCV) it will start flashing - this means it is 'on' and the O2 sensor is being heated up to operating temp. If you have only powered the PCV using a USB cable (and the O2 sensors heating wires are behind a switched source, as they should be!) then the light will just keep flashing until the end of time. If you have turned on the bike itself it'll flash for up to 60 seconds (depending on air temp) until the O2 sensor is hot enough to start working. Once it is on and heated, the light should go steady and constant (you can test that the O2 sensor is warmed up by touching it).

What do you mean you are not getting an AFR reading? Normally if the O2 sensor is not sending a reading (eg. it isn't warm enough or not plugged correctly) it will display '9.99' in the PCV software. Are you seeing this or 0.00? If all 0s check that the CAN cable is correctly plugged in (mine took a bit of pressure to click in correctly) and make sure you have enabled the Autotune in the PCV software configuration.

If you are getting 9.99 and the light is steady, check all connections - especially that you have the wires from the O2 sensor cable going into the Autotune in the correct order (and use my jewellers screwdriver trick to make sure all the membranes had been punctured). Also remove the CAN terminator from the Autotune and put it in again (even try swapping the ports).

Engine temp is optional - I would work on getting the AFR first, then tackle engine temp.

I'm getting 0s. I'll push on the connector again. When I looked at "about" it did show that it saw a wideband, and the status says 2 devices.

edit - Went back out and pulled the terminator and the cable. On the terminator one of the connectors looked like it was pushed to the side, so I made a little room.
Still nothing. Perhaps tomorrow I'll try to push the female side connetors a little more together to make sure they are making good contact. I'm not getting any errors.
Also, if the wideband were not working, would I still see trims in the autotune table?

Don't fret too much mate - I've just discovered my PCV is showing everythig *except* fuel adjustments. It shows RPM, throttle, gear, engine temp, AFR, and duty cycle. But no matter the map, it's showing fuel adjust as zero.

Freakin' bizarre. I had trouble upgrading to version 1.4.0 too, and had to do it a few times. Fark, maybe I need to do it *again*.

Anyone know if you can downgrade firmware to 1.3.0? And if anyone has a copy?

If you are getting trim values (and a decent range of them) then the Autotune should be working. Maybe try going for a 15-20 minute ride, then when you get back leave the bike running, put it on it's centre stand and then hook your laptop up to the PCV. Are you getting any AFR readings then?

You can't downgrade to 1.3.0 (don't ask how I know that :P ). It wont brick your PCV, as you can re-upgrade it to 1.4.0. But before you do that you will be crapping your pants as the PCV chucks errors and your bike wont start.

To test your fuel adjustment reading try enriching the idle ranges. I did this and it made my bike sound happier at idle (for extra fun, try playing with the settings while the bike is running, pretty neat!). Strange that it is not showing the set fuel adjustment...

Yeah, the trims were scattered (I've only done one, 15 min. ride)and varied greatly, but based on what I've read on this board, that doesn't seem wrong. And, referring to earlier, the led on my autotune is indicating the same as others.
As I was half asleep this AM still pondering things, I finally figured out how to get to map by gear to enable it. So, I guess I'll accept the trims I have and enable map by gear and see what happens.

I was wondering if I have an issue with the software on my pc, as I read you can't use the new firmware w/o the new software. I downloaded and installed the latest, but maybe I should reinstall...dunno.

Well, I managed to fix my problems with the PCV not showing fuel changes. My Autotune arrived on Monday, so last night I fitted it and threw all caution to the wing by loading up GPM's map - warts (trim) and all, and just rode the damn thing.

First up, it ran pretty well. But bugger me - you can feel the Autotune doing its thing for sure!
I should post my trims and stuff to see how different my trimmed map is to GPM's, given the mileage differences and my cleaned injectors.

I'm stoked though. STOKED.

Well folks, it seems that GPM's map is way off the mark for me after all. The longer I rode it, the worse my bike felt - particularly at cruise. Looking at the trim tables, there were "-20" entries all over the place. Trying to get to the target AFR values just kept hitting the maximum trim value and sitting there. I'm guessing this is when the bike started to feel like crud.

My clean injectors keep biting me, it seems! I've zeroed out the map again and I am now going to try and trim a zero map. Just watch - I'll probably throw in the towel tomorrow and just zero the whole thing out until I get my headers fitted and a custom tune done!

Some of GPM's target AFR's seem a little lean to me. To start with, change all your targets to match the Dynojet file. This will set most cells to 13.2. Narrow your limits to +15 and -10. There are many ways to get bad readings. Insure that your exhaust connections are not leaking. Make sure that no air is entering the exhaust through the PAIR system. You may have disabled it, but is it air tight? Make sure your you're not trying to tune before you get to at least 165 degrees (f). The O2 sensor works because of a difference of oxygen content between the "inside" of the sensor and the "outside" of the sensor. The outside of the sensor needs to be protected from gunk. There's also times, under hard deceleration, when it's possible to pull exhaust that's "touched" the cat, back to the O2 sensor. You can also follow the test procedures for the O2 sensor itself and make sure it's ok. Even when all is well, you'll still 'weird' cells now and then. You need to check your trims often at first and correct anything is that is obviously not correct. Over time, narrow the limits. I currently have my limits set at +9 and -6. Doing this keeps any 'weird' cells from making the bike run bad until the cell is auto-corrected.

Keep in mind, you're checking the mixture after the mixture has been used. This is not going to be an exact science, it still needs to be monitored, especially in the beginning.

I did one ride to work. Check out the trim table for fifth gear as it tries to hit an AFR of 13.7:1.

Here's the deal.

The way the stock map works is that in the cruise area, where the bike would normally go into close loop, the 'default' map is rich. When the throttle position, RPM, and temp (also gear for '06 and up)are all in the correct windows for close loop, the info from the stock O2 sensor is used to lean the mixture for best efficiency and emissions.

The O2 sensor produces a very small voltage when the oxygen content of the outside air is different of that of the exhaust.

The EMU checks the current going through the heater of the O2 sensor to make sure the O2 sensor is connected and that the heater is good. When you unplug the factory O2 sensor and add the O2 eliminator, you added a resistor across the heater circuit that allows enough current to flow to make the EMU believe the O2 sensor is connector and the heater is working fine. Now, since the O2 sensor is really not connected, the voltage to the sensor circuit is zero and the EMU thinks the bike is full lean. Since the closed loop system only works lean a rich mixture, it does nothing.

That's why you're getting those numbers. The stock map with a 'disabled' O2 circuit, is rich and the Autotune is trying to fix it by leaning it out. Look at a stock Dynojet map for a 6th gen, and you'll see neg numbers in those same areas, where most other areas are positive.

That being said, I'd say your numbers are a little too lean. By about 5% or so. I'd double check all the stuff I listed in my earlier post, including the sensor test. Is you're air filter in good condition? Have you seen the posts where the rats nest in them?

See, I cleaned and re-oiled my K&N air filter on the weekend too. Maybe I over-oiled it and the bike is running rich. Or maybe not? I've basically changed too many variables at once and probably need to sit back and have a think about it all. But I'm an impatient bastard, which doesn't help.

UPDATE: OK, checked the air filter. Definitely not over-oiled, if anything could do with a touch up in a couple of spots if I was being pedantic. Also checked my spark plugs, just for laughs, and they have a nice healthy colour to them with good electrodes (they are about 40,000km old)

Awesome explanation Coderighter! As I understand it in open loop mode Honda had the bike aiming for an AFR of 14.7, but it was altering a very rich area of the base map.

Each bike is different and likely to give different readings - my bike is more stock then yours, and as such I would have expected your bike to be running leaner from the start - that autotune keeps wanting to lean up your map more then mine does is just odd. In the same cruise area in 5th gear my readings are richer then yours (well, closer to 0 but many still in the negatives). On the other hand my 4th gear is about as lean as your 5th gear map there - my bike runs largely fine in both.

Don't necessarily trust the Dynojet maps - keep in mind that they are designed to cover 6 gears at the same time and are likely made the normal dynotune way, with a heavy emphasis on WOT and peak performance, not gentle cruising with steady throttle and a reduced fuel bill. As I have said previously the autotune lets your bike be what ever you want it to be. Try going over the whole setup just to ensure nothing is slightly out of place. After that, I would suggest giving a different fuel a go - I can 'feel' the autotune hitting the trim limits when I have an old (2-3 week) almost empty tank of fuel, it don't think it is much of a stretch to think that a different brand and rating may make all the difference - I normally run 95 or 91 octane (depending on where I fill up) without any trouble, and normally stick with BP or Caltex (I have had bad experiences with Shell in the past, so I avoid them now).

Hummm...... This '06 stock map, I think shows what I'm talking about pretty clearly. I should clarify, the positive and negative are relative. Because these maps are for bikes that have the O2 sensors disabled and don't have Autotune (PCIII), they are rich so that Dynojet doesn't get blamed for melting down a motor. With Autotune, those numbers will (should) be leaner. With differences in Map sensors, pressure regulators, temp sensors, and throttle position sensors (all analog devices), these reading will vary between bikes, no two the same.

However you say your bike runs bad, so I think you have something a miss.

Some of you have mentioned talking with a tech at PC. How did that go? I've got to look at my connections AGAIN, as I enabled map by gear and I got nothing in the trims. When I tried to manually calibrate, it wasn't sensing me being in gear, so I'll be redoing that connection.

After that, I guess I'm going to have to talk to someone, since I still get no afr/temp anything but rpm on my gauge panel.

It's just wierd that I had the exact same problem as you and rectified it with another firmware upgrade attempt. I'm not sure why yours is still stuck in this situation, and I think it's time to call Dynojet. Tell them that you had firmware 1.2.0 and upgraded to 1.4.0 to get the temperature readings to work, but now nothing works.

I was once told from tech support that when the switch was off, the PCV still used the base map with current trims but trims were no longer adjusted. I have been given bad info before so this weekend I'll have to give it a try and see what happens. The manual says-

"A switch can be wired into the PCV to be used to toggle between your base map and learning mode. Any SPST (open/close) type switch can be used. When the switch is OPEN the PCV will be running on the base map. When the switch is CLOSED the PCV will go into learn mode and Autotune will start making fuel trim adjustments."

It doesn't say trims are included, but it also doesn't say they're not.

If you have to take 20% of fuel out of a mixture to get to 13.7, then that means the starting mixture was 11.3? That don't sound right. From a emission stand point, I don't think that would have flown. The most negitive number I have is -10, and thats in that 'cruise' window. The bike runs great and I get a little over 40 MPG, which is pretty good considering I'm 6'4" - 250. I catch a ton of wind. You said the bike runs bad with those numbers, I don't think I'd run it that way.

As a side note, I've seen more amd more info that Honda really uses alot of temp input in the setup of the map. I'm changing my start sampling temp up to 175 and i think I'm going to add a switch to disable the autotune above 200. I think this will help me better define my base map. I do believe a good base map really is the key to this thing.

It could be because I'm running 98 RON octane. It's what you would call 95 I believe, and at least here in Australia it is a denser fuel which results in a richer mixture per injector pulse/charge.

Putting in the 98 was probably a dumb idea for the stock target AFRs. Only time and experience will confirm that though.

I personally wouldn't be getting too worried about silly trim values at this stage - for the first 500km or so mine were all over the place, I accepted most of them, but like Coderighter suggests above, I fixed up some of the more extreme versions. The longer you run the thing the better it gets. Related to this I think we all start of with a trim focus, caring too much about the values we are getting ride-to-ride - I realise now that it is the trend that is important, not one off values. My graphs in part help show the trend, and with the exception of the 2% throttle ranges (which I'll return to shortly), I am surprised at how 'consistent' it is - between readings there seems to be a pretty even change across the line, which would support Coderighter's views that the ECU puts a lot of emphasis on environmental conditions (eg. a significant change in temps result in a largely uniform shift across the line).

My readings tend to be +/- 15% from 0 - but my bike is largely stock, I expect an aftermarket exhaust and airfilter, for instance, would lean out the bike some (hence Coderighter's being more +/- 10%). That you are getting -20% and it is running bad is what is alarming - the values themselves tend to be a bit mad to begin with. Maybe try pulling the plugs and see what they reveal - I have pulled out the front plugs twice since installing the Autotune to make sure everything is running ok, and both were a nice healthy tan.

2% throttle is the exception, it just jumps all over the place, and I frankly blame this on the decel issue - one fix I have read of is 0-ing the AFR targets for the 2% throttle, and copy the fuel map from the 5% throttle over the 2% fuel map range. I am mighty tempted to try this, but I am more and more keen to try out the vacuum switch. Other throttle positions experience the problem too, but it is normally one cell that stands out easily enough to manually fix.

Speaking of the vacuum switch did you have any luck plumbing your guage onto the vacuum line heading off to the one-way-valve?
On the same topic, Coderighter, what vacuum switch did you use? There seems to be many different (expensive) options on ebay, and frankly I am out of my league when it comes to making the right selection.

My paper manual that came with the box supports the techs position - but they may have changed it in a firmware update....

Try going for a nice ride, so 30-60 mins, return home, leave the bike running, put it in neutral, lift onto the centre stand, plug in the PCV to your laptop, pop the bike into gear, drag a little rear brake and slowly increase the trottle - see if you start getting any readings then (speed and gear is what you are after, AFR shouldn't be affected by these things, why it wont display is a mystery).

If still nothing it's time to contact Dynojet - and your PCV or Autotune may be faulty :(

Thanks for all the replys. When I connected the other day, it was after a long ride. I have to assume my tap is no good for the gear sensor....OR, I still have a botched firmware upgrade (odd since it shows the new version.)

Maybe I'll try reloading the software on my netbook, and then try flashing the PC again. Can't hurt.

I was thinking about your issue you got going on but first I think we need to talk about the octane rating of gas.

A higher octane rated gas (OK, petrol), in no way contains more energy. Really, it could be said that it contains less energy. The octane rating is a measure of the resistance of petrol to autoignition in an internal combustion engines. It's a measure of the fuel's tendency to burn in a controlled manner, rather than exploding in an uncontrolled manner. Where octane is raised by blending in ethanol, energy content per volume is reduced.

This uncontrolled ignition is caused by heat, heat from cylinder temp and heat from the act of compressing the mixture. Compression is static and not controllable. However, there are ways to control cylinder temp. Mainly, engine timing and mixture (leaner is hotter), can be controlled to manage cylinder temp. We hear this uncontrolled ignition as a knocking sound. This sound is cause by the mixture igniting while the piston is to low in the cylinder, trying to push it in the wrong direction.

In a car, the engine management system includes a knock sensor. When the sensor 'hears' knock, the computer adjusts timing, and mixture to prevent knock. In theory, the leaner the mixture and the more spark advance, the more power and economy. So using this theory, the higher the octane rating, the more resistance to knock and the less fuel and the more timing advance can be used. Because the AFR has to be controlled for other reasons also, it mostly timing that is adjusted. The computer runs the timing up to the knock, quickly backs off a hair then creeps back up until knock is heard then quickly backs off again. It does this over and over, really fast, to maintain max performance for the fuel that being used. Oddly enough, alot of the time the improvement in economy, doesn't always make up of the extra price of the premium fuel. Most the time when it says "premium recommended", it's for the manufactures benefit. Any improvement, no matter now small, helps them meet their EPA goals. Yes, the premeim will gain you a little, tiny, amount of power but whats your needs? Track car, by all means get the premium. My wife's "premium recommend" BMW, never sees it. I've tested on road trips, premium increases the MPG less than .5 MPG. At 30 MPG (highway) that's an improvement of 1.6%. Currently, in my part of the world, regular is about $2.90 and premium is $3.10 which makes it about 7% price difference. Now cars are different, so your results may vary. Also, some are "premuim required", so beware.

Before i get off my soapbox, EPA MPG ratings are the same reason for the flood of cars recommending 0w-20 oil. Anything to up that MPG number, even a hair. I, for one, will never put 0W anything in a internal combustion engine!

Sorry, back to the VFR and octane. Motorcycles don't have knock sensors. They can't adapt to a fuel with a increased octane rating. Anything over the octane rating required by mother Honda (86, for 6th gen VFR) buys you nothing and depending on now the rating is raised, it may actually hurt you.

Motorcycles, in general, are not know for their hot ignition systems. This is mainly do to trying to keep the bikes weight to a minimum. Your bike is older and has more KM's than most so I'm guessing the spark hasn't gotten any brighter over time. Is it possible that your running such a high octane rating that your ignition system is not hot enough for complete combustion causing the autotune to think the bike is running richer than it really is ?

Even if it is denser, whatever is added to increase the octane rating displaces some hydrocarbons by volume. If there was a way to adjust timing (read 'advance'), you could tune for the fuel. That Shell link seemed more like a sales flyer than a fact document backed with any kind of testing results.

Please let us know what happens with the 87 octane.

Most petrol stations seem to want to pass off 91RON with 10% ethanol poison - seeing as ethanol is often used to raise octane ratings (as well as its other features) you can imagine the 'quality' of that fuel before 10% ethanol was added to get it to pass muster as 91RON.

If you have trouble finding real 91RON fuel try a Caltex/Woolworths, most of their stations seem to stock it. I find myself switching between 91 and 95RON unleaded depending on what the station has on offer.


Another thing to try, disable the autotune but continue to use the trimed based map - I have noticed that when I am running along before the autotune enables (I have mine set to 80 degrees now, in light of Coderighter's posts on the impact of temp on Honda's ECU) the bike runs just amazingly, after the autotune kicks in I can feel it adjusting when I am commuting. I am now almost certain this is due to large number of speed/RPM/throttle adjustments I have to go through in heavy traffic to/from work, resulting in the decel issue (and a nice smooth map being turned into a chaotic jumble). Compared highway or twisty riding, where throttle is either constantly steady or going up/down in smooth, broad movements commuting with the autotune just doesn't feel as good. Not dangerous or horrible, just not as enjoyable. Hopefully I'll have this issue resolved soon - Coderighter has set me up with what I need to get a vacuum switch going (much kudos to you Coderighter!). Once I get the parts I'll hook it up (and produce a nice install guide). Hopefully it'll even out the commute!


And while I am on issues - another I have noticed a few times (and a solution too!). I could feel the autotune mucking things up (and it was not enjoyable at all - I would even go dangerous!). This problem would eventually right itself, but it would take a few minutes.
I noticed this problem only seemed to happen when I took off again with the bike still hot from the previous ride. I figured out that the problem was that the engine temp was still high (deep in the bowels anyway), but the headers, and O2 sensor, had cooled significantly - end result, the PCV would see a good engine temp, and enable the autotune, but the O2 sensor itself wasn't at operating temp and so it was producing very bad readings, resulting in terrible running.
Solution was simple, I set the PCV to wait 60 seconds AND have an engine temp of over 80 degrees Celsius before enabling the autotune - problem has gone.

Extrapolating this, if your bike is running like absolute crap with autotune, check to make sure that the O2 sensor is operating correctly. Could be it isn't up to operating temperature, could be it is just putting out bad readings.

Right now I'm working on a project with Tightwad and as soon is as I get that done, my next job is to find a way to turn off the Autotune at 200 degrees and above. I'm told the EMU really starts to richen it up at higher temps to help bring the temp down. First, I don't want the PCV to work against that, and second, I don't want to pollute cells.

Hmmm, 200 is 93 degrees celsius, which on a normal day would be within my normal operating temps (the bike tends to sit somewhere between 90 and 100 degrees, with it going up to 105 when sitting still for a few minutes).
My thoughts on the solution would be to fool the ECU into thinking it was always a particular temp, that way the ECUs adjustments for temp are constant. If my autotune is succesfully countering the ECUs adjustments (ie. bringing the mixture back to what it wants, thus negating the cooling effect) then feeding a constant temp isn't likely to do any harm - my bike isn't running any hotter now then it was, and I was running the autotune through the later part of our summer. Maybe I should set my enable point to 85 or even 90 degrees....

It would be interesting to know just how much Honda tries to richen things up. I guess the message here though is autotune users should set a high enable temp, something a little below what would be lowest temp you would expect on proper usage. To low and the autotune will end up, as you say, polluting cells, and if you accept trims from a short (cool) ride, your autotune and ECU will end up locked in battle next time around.

Ya, mine just doesn't run that hot. As long as I am moving, I am under 200. A 205 switch might be a better choice.

To address the heat issue, why not just add some fuel when the engine temps hit a certain mark? That option is available to us no?

The last I was told, setting a percent temp increase, doesn't turn off the autotune. If you wanted a 5% increase and your upper limit was set at 10%, you would need to set the increase on temp to 15% to override the autotune. Of course, that would pollute any cells you passed by during that time. I should check, maybe they fixed that in the latest firmware.

That was easily the 4th time I had flashed it. Every other time it didn't seem to complete right, but would add in a recovery step and it *looked* correct. This time it went through start to finish no issues. Whew.

That was easily the 4th time I had flashed it. Every other time it didn't seem to complete right, but would add in a recovery step and it *looked* correct. This time it went through start to finish no issues. Whew.


Yeah looks like the firmware update process is a little dodgy still. I guess the PCV is still only about a year old and Dynojet haven't got their code running clean enough yet. Which isn't really acceptable, but it is what it is.

So how did you get it to start running good?

First let me conceed that I have little time in on it. Second, it has never actually run bad, the PCV just didn't seem to be working. So, I don't know if it always "worked" and I just couldn't see it, or if it only now has started doing something. The ride home was fine, but hardly a time to get a feel for good or bad. Nothing felt "wrong".
I've got to take it for inspection in a few which will give me some more opportunity to see. I've only accepted my first set of trims.

Some ideas, though, if I may. Easy way to test if you are having MAP sensor issues, unplug it and start your bike - it's pretty obvious when that puppy has failed - but I would check all the vacuum lines under your airbox. Out of interest, what time of day are you commuting at? And more importantly, what is the air temp difference and traffic like? The runs good on the way to work, crap on the way home pattern has a hint of something more then a coincidence to it.

Maybe do a check over of your exhaust as well - the super lean-super rich switch back you are having with the autotune, maybe something is impacting exhaust flow (causing autotune to go nuts in the process)?

Maybe something you pulled apart with your recent maintainance hasn't sealed properly and is causing a vacuum leak? Whats your fuel consumption like? Speaking of vacuum leaks, T-join into the vacuum line heading to the MAP sensor and slap a vacuum gauge on there - what are the readings like? That's a quick and easy diagnostic tool that wont cost you anything.


Just as an update, I have another thread going which describes my problems getting worse. I'm at the point now of investigating my ignition pulse generator wiring and the pulse generator itself. Another member had similar problems to what I'm seeing.

So as an interesting update to the Autotune discussions, I have just listed mine for sale on eBay.

Basically, after having a custom tune done, the benefits offered by the Autotune just didn't materialise. The only place I really cared about tuning were the throttle positions and rpms where the Autotune was unable to really make a difference. The main problem was needing to find the right AFR value - which is unique per bike for the best experience - and the need to use a vacuum-controlled switch to remove the problems caused by decelerating on an open throttle.

In essence, my tuning shop had to put values in my PCV map you wouldn't normally expect to put in, so that I have smooth throttle response. So rather than a computer working it out, my tuning guy sat there and thought "outside the box" to get me a good working map. And being a computer, the Autotune can't do creative thinking on the fly. So, given the cost of the Autotune ($375) versus the cost of a custom tune ($350), it was not able to make a level of difference that matched its price.

I suppose I migh get flamed by Coderighter and GPM for saying all this. Sorry folks!

Ah.... Come on, I'm not the flaming type!

Hey, you got to do what works for you. I think we're in different situations. Your bike is an '04 so you don't have the map by gear like the '06 and later have. In theory, one map should work for you. If I could even talk someone around here to map each gear, I'm sure it would cost me much a lot than $350. Besides, I paid $195 for the Autotune.

It sounds like you have a good tuner available. Every 'map' I've seen done by a local tuners around here, is a Dynojet map with some changes in the 100% throttle column.

I've had really good luck with my Autotune. That said, it's not perfect and it does require a lot of interaction to get good results. I'm also thinking there will be some firmware changes coming to deal with some of the short comings. (I would really like to see a temp sampling window that could be setup).

I like to tinker. Since there is no airflow meter, any tinkering that has an effect on airflow, requires a map change. I don't want to visit the 'tuner' whenever I tinker.

As the bike ages, things will change. There's a spring in the fuel pressure regulator, springs over time 'relax'. Even with the best gas, over time the injectors will flow a little less. In theroy, the Autotune should correct for those little changes.
Wasn't there a member a while back that had a engine failure that was linked to a low flowing injector?

Just some thoughts.

So this should work with a 5th gen too shouldn't it? Same main throttle body connector, also have an electronic speed sensor and can also hook up to the temp gauge.
