Just purchased a 07 VFR Candy Red with 800mi owner said he replaced front sprocket 1 up to cure surging at low speed, which it works great around town, but at Highway cruising at 60 I noticed RPMs are at 5000? I spoke with chad at sprocket center and said it should be about 400RPMs lower with the 17tooth. The mileage is also terrible I have went through a half tank and rode about 100mi. I drive sensible, and no other mods except Speed Healer he added. Need to know what stock RPMs are at 60 to compare. My 2000 VFR I had never remember being that high or eat so much fuel. My FJR1300 was at 3500RPMs at 60 with only a 5 speed. THanks for any replies.

So the bike only has 800miles on it? And the last guy went up one tooth in the front already???? Am I reading that right? Damn the bike is not even broke in yet, at 800miles. The way I fixed the low speed surging was to adjust the throttle cable, as it had too much play from the factory. So you could never find that sweet spot.
I think my 07 with stock gears runs around 4000rpm at 60mph. Hard to remember, who drives at 60MPH LOL.
Fuel milage is around 200miles until the low fuel light starts to flash is about the normal.
Did you get the stock front sprocket with the bike? And are you sure he went up one in the front? Based on the RPMs you giving us, I would say he has gone up one in the rear.
I Have the Original sprocket in the new AFAM box that he gave me the original has 16t on it, doubt the rear was change it is original along with the chain. # on the box 20602-15. bike is immaculate and owner was in his 50s and honest about the changing gearing. If it is a 17t gearing should be about 2.53 instead of fac. 2.69 will check with GPS to compare this weekend. Might change back to Orig. if there are no special tricks to changing the front.

At stock gearing my 2002 at 60mph would be right on about 5,000rpm, maybe a tad less.
I rode around for 18 months with a 17-tooth front sprocket - without knowing it because the dealer stuffed up and put a 2001 model sprocket on the bike - and it made the bike feel underpowered. I basically never used 6th-gear except for highway cruising.
Back to stock gearing and I use 6th-gear all the time now.
kaldek: What was your gas mileage like with the 17t front sprocket like? I kind of wish that 6th was taller, the spread between 5th and 6th isn't that large in my opinion, this sounds like a kind of nice mod actually.

Nah it was never that good because like I say, I never used 6th gear. If I had used it, it would probably have been better. Even going back to stock, I didn't get much better mileage.
I get much better mileage now that I have a powercommander and an autotune - I have O2 sensor eliminators fitted and they made the bike run crazy rich in the cruising zone (4-5,000rpm and small throttle openings). My Autotune educated me just HOW rich the bike had been running there for the last 7 years...

I'm pretty sure I'm running about 70+ mph at 5000 rpms in high gear on my 07rwb. much slower in high and i feel like it's lugging
5000 = great cruise speed for the engine. Also a great spot to find out just what lean-miss feels like.
I don't think you're experiencing lugging, that's poor carburation at work, and you can get into the exciting world of either complaining about it (me, currently) or fighting it (a lot of people have gone this route) to improve on the situation.
I run at 4,000 rpms in 6th at 60mph on an 05, and it's just perfect for cruising. Below that the engine lugs a little. My gears are all stock. 5,000 would feel like the engine is reving too much for me on a highway gear. Kinda like my friend's Vulcan 1500. It's a 4 speed, and I'm always looking for 5th because I feel the engine should be very low in the revs on the highway at 60.
First , I just want to thank everyone for their replies they are much appreciated!, I did check the rear sprocket today and It has the fac. stamped 43 on the sprocket. Tomorrow I will do a run and check Speedo vs. Gps to make sure the Speedhealer is correct. I checked idle and is at 1200RPM so that is correct. It seems around 4000RPM at 60 is where I need to be and 5000RPM is at about 80. Gearingcommander website had excellent information "Thanks for that website"
Printed all gearing info from Gearingcommander website today and did a trip to Conowingo Dam.
1. Checked GPS to Speedo. Dead even. so I know Speedhealer is set correct.
2. Checked speed at different RPMs up to 80MPH which was at 6000rpm even?
3. Compared every ones replies on their speed and rpm
4. Checked all the tables from website printouts for stock,1up,1down
5. Believe it is 1 down looking at the tables not 1 up figures match more to 15tooth than all the rest.
6. Motor in stop and go traffic today got to 225f? outside air temp 80f
7. Started to change back to the stock gear but the clutch diaphragm kept pushing out of the housing
Any tricks to keeping that in place, and which side does the factory one go stamped 16t is this inside up against the motor or outside towards fairing.
Here are the final results with the high RPMs.
1. The guy screwed up or somebody ordered the wrong part. Part#on box with the #15 means 15t.
2. Removed the sprocket and counted the teeth 15 teeth! urrrrrrrr!
3. Changed back to original sprocket 16t.
4. Erased the settings in the Speedhealer until I can calculate with GPS and factory Speedo.
Hopefully now we are close to every ones RPM and speed.
Thanks to all who replied!
