Dealing with the rear shock

I have a '96 vfr and it rides like a couch on the rear end comfortable but not exactly nimble. Any advice: Do cbr 929 rear shocks swap easily or any other input greatly appreciated.

hi there ive put a 929 rear shock in,i abtained the shock from ebay,the fitting and modding was completed using notes from the forum the hard part for me was trimming the heat shield as it interferes with the reservoir. :fing02:

Thank you. I do look around on here before asking these questions, but my time is limited. All help is much appreciated as my time to work on bikes is even more limited.

I had Jamie Daugherty rebuild a 929 shock ($25.00 on Ebay) with Racetech Gold valves and a stiffer spring. Two words describe this mod:

BLOODY BRILLIANT!!!!

You don't necessarily need to go for the full valve job either, I did because I'm tracking my bike regularly so want the full deal (front being done too).

Talk to Jamie about getting an extended clevis on a 929. The heat shield mod isn't too difficult and you'll love it. I just spent a day at Mallory Park and the rear end felt totally composed throughout. In fact, it is so good that the front now feels pretty lame and I'm going to do it to match.

Highly recommend the 929 shock option for 3rd/4th Gen bikes.

What if anything have you done to boost power to your bike?

nothing to the engine


Replacing the OEM muffler with a CF Akrapovic saved some 5 kilo in weight

Yes, but why waste the money on the stock non-adjustable when you could have a fully adjustable 929 shock for basically the same money!

PS what tires do you run?
A simple change to quick turning tires like Pilot Power's can completely change the handling of a VFR drastically for the better. Also always set SAG first, then you can either drop the front end (5-10mm) or shim the rear shock(5mm) and greatly enhance the bikes turn-in. :fing02:

This '96 vfr has a full 2 bros. exhaust and I'm running Dunlop Roadsmarts. The previous owner dropped one tooth in the front, a change I don't see any point to. I am planning on taking it back to stock gearing. I use this bike on the street. Living in Boulder CO I can carve 3-4 canyons within minutes from my house so I am more interested in longevity on tires. They hold well enough for how I will push them on the street. Bike has 42K+ miles on it. If I don't pick up a track bike for next season I would consider taking out to the track, but would rather not risk tossing it down the road. I have done no set-up (suspension) yet. I will work on those parts this winter.

Don't bother with the stock shock, it's going to be just as much money even if it can be rebuilt.

I have put on the modded left exit exhaust, modified airbox, UNI filter and re-jetted the carbs. I'm getting 97.1hp at the rear wheel but am a bit rich.

When I finish the airbox mods/tuning, I'll post info in one of my other threads.

Forgot to mention, I'm running a brand new set of Bridgestone BT-023 tyres. Don't know how they'll last, but the felt great on the track 10 days ago. Bridgestone quote a 30% longer life than the 021 tyres.

I have a 929 shock that jamie rebuilt while I was in Iraq last year, its the best thing I ever did for the bike!
Mine is decked out as well with a gold valve and that but even a resprung/charged shock would be a good upgrade.
Jamie does first rate work and is a great person to deal with. I was able to have the shock from ebay shipped straight to him.
